In the first two (not so much with the whole family portrait) the subjects look super-awkward. The first one is especially bad for that - the guy looks nervous and he's fiddling with his glasses which makes the whole shot look forced and tense.

Yea you're right, it looks odd. also her hand doesn't look like it's dangling naturally. Gotta keep an eye for those details. Your photo is pretty good though, great light, very clean. Very nice.

The frond on the right is bit distracting and leads your eye out of the frame almost immediately. This scene feels more like a thing you should have shot in horizontal format to give a more balanced look to the composition. On the technical aspects the chroma noise in your midtones is out of control here, did you boost the exposure and/saturation in post?

My experiences with strangers just passively walking around shooting landscapes have been overwhelmingly negative. I think people's relationship with cameras and being photographed varies region to region.

I think people's relationship with cameras and being photographed varies region to region. I think that there's a difference between a stranger taking strange pictures and asking someone if you can make a portrait of them, though. I've gotten my share of strange looks and been followed a few times when shooting landscapes, but approaching someone with a smile and explaining that I'd like to photograph them has never even gotten me a polite "no". (not that they are good enough pictures for me to post here). And the "funny camera" helps, I'm sure. My TLR and my 4x5 strike up conversation and disarm someone a little more than my giant dSLR.

Yeah, those are good points. I was talking to someone on here recently about which camera gets you the most disarmed response from the average person on the street. I would think it would be any type of view camera / something that looks "old".
