Green is still best.
Is it just me or is the Ork Battleship just sort of ridiculous? I've just upgraded mine to Goff and it's pretty indestructable. Anything I can't blow up with the 3 broadside gun upgrades I just ram into and board and wipe it out.

Well it is enjoyable for sure.
Or to put it like this, while waiting for the campaign, I am just running solo ai skirmishes, which is both fun and feels like a minicampaign since you both grind ships and get random missions.

I have 24 hours in on the incomplete multiplayer beta. Ultimately it depends on what you are looking for, but I have a Real Time Tactics itch it scratches perfectly.

Trying out multiplayer once I thought I understood the basics through skirmishes, I kind of agree with you. And dear god if you thought the AI was ram-happy just wait til you meet other players!

Basics:

as Chaos: stay away from everything
as Orks: stop muckin aboot and HIT THAT RED BUTTON FOR A SWEET RAM!

I love it! 26 hours in the beta and I don't regret it for a second.

I've figured out my Imperial fleet list:

Light Cruisers: Dauntless mk1x4
Astartes favour, additional teleports, extra void shields, speed upgrade
Skills: Bombs of some kind

These dudes are basically delivery mechanisms for space marines. I use them the same way as I use Ork light cruisers; move in quickly and ram like a crazy person.

Cruiser: Dominator x3
Mechanicus favour, armour penetrators, extra void shields, extra void shield regens
Skills: Shield refresh, microwarp jump, Stasis bomb

These guys are heavy brawlers. Get in close and keep their huge broadsides on the enemy sides and rears. They can each take a huge beating but they rely on other fleet elements, stasis bomb and microwarp jump to keep abreast of their prey.

Battlecruiser: Mars x1
Inquisition favour, speed upgrade, extra boost, cloaking
Skills: Sensor beacon, microwarp jump, boost refresh

This is a specialty/utility piece for data recovery and assassination defense missions. It can move deceptively fast and fire its thrusters for an absurdly long time. I also hope it'll give me the ability to catch, ram and close with chaos fleets.

This list has been really effective against imperials and orks, I win 75% or so of my games. I have a tougher time against chaos but I hope I'll be able to solve that by adding an Emperor and finishing a Nova Cannon line.

I'm also considering a gimmick list where everyone takes Navy favour and I just sit and build up a deathball of cobras.

For Assassination Defense specifically, I would suggest trying out a Dauntless (version depends on your preference) with Adeptus Mechanicus favor and speed, +100% silent running and stealthy special maneuvers upgrades.
For skills, Micro-Warp Jump plus the maneuvering gauge refresh.

This way you have a ship that doesn't costs much while being the fastest line ship you can get as Imperial Navy that is able to sneak away at full speed from your main force. As long as you play it smart at the start by having it initiate movement with the rest of the fleet and then have it veer off with silent running on, you'll likely never have to worry about it being attacked, and if you screw up you still have two active skills that you can use to have it get out of range of any potential attacker.

It's totally possible I haven't met many good Ork players but my Emperor will just sit somewhere far away (and if you get close jump somewhere far away in the opposite direction :v:) and usually wrecks those.

So which battlecruisers should you grab as chaos? I was looking at a styx and a Acheron, should I double up on one or the other, and which should I grab first?

Eh, I decided on a Styx first (carriers are just too useful to ignore) and will probably an Acheron as a second to get some decent long-range fire power in my fleet. Though my choice of Acheron is mainly to support my 3 Nurgle slaugthers.

Lord Koth
Jan 8, 2012

Having 2 Styxes is probably the more powerful choice overall, simply because at that point you're throwing out truly absurd amounts of strike craft, but the Acheron is rather good too, so it's not a case of one pick just being terrible. I ended up going with one of each and don't regret it.

upgunned shitpost
Jan 21, 2015

I went with double Acherons, supporting two tricked-out for boarding Slaughters with Nurgle favours. Tie'em down and cut'em up. If I need fighter screens or strikecraft, I'll bring a pair of Devestations or the Despoiler depending on points. The two Acherons just dump out so much damage at range quickkly it's fantastic.

Beware the skill varies a lot, you may win 75% of the time until you come up against a competent player. I was doing the same thing until i matched against a good player then he handily trounced me.

A specialized stealth dauntless will make you unstoppable in data recovery/assassination missions and you can just farm the poo poo out of renown. I take 2 dauntless cruisers and 2 escorts on 700 point data recovery missions and i win 90% of the time with an easy 400 renown bonus. Just use your escorts to confuse the other player while giving your main ship a queued movement order and enjoy their confusion at finally catching an escort while your dauntless is on the other side of the map.

Is there an obvious argument for one Chaos battleship over the other, or is it mostly for taste- IE: Lances or Strike Craft?

Also, if you had to pick upgrades for an Acheron, I've started with the Amp Lance Damage and longer orders which is great- but I'm not sure about the rest. Is the lance range increase worth a drat? Everything already seems to hit out at 12k anyway.

The range upgrade is great. 3k makes a big difference. I think the standard map is something like 40x40. So at 15k You can hit almost half way across it.

I like the Despoiler because Prow Bays count as two bays. So it launches 8 squadrons.

I really hope they patch in some quality-of-life improvements when the full game goes live. Off the top of my head:

• Get rid of all that dead time before/during/after the Defeat/Victory screen. Whether having just lost or won, it is frustrating as hell to sit there waiting to be able to do anything again.
• Allow yrders to be issued via the minimap. This is especially crucial in multiplayer where you can't just activate tactical cogitators and effectively lose no time in swapping your view. It sucks in multiplayer to be trying to kite, or ram, or anything more complex than orbit-and-shoot, and you have to swap your vision just to tell your ships to reposition or use some aoe ability.
• Create a click-modifier hotkey that allows multiple ships' abilities to be triggered at once instead of having to tab; for example, if I want to have all of my ships to 'Reload' or 'Lightning Strike' at once.

Not sure about the others, but if you have a group of ships selected and toggle the autocast on a skill they'll all go off at once. I use this as Orc to set up massive boarding pod swarms :getin:

Upgrading range to 15K also used allowed you to out range the starbase, before they also gave the station 15K range anyways.

For a faction that's all about long range combat, you don't really have any favor to further your range edge. I guess they figured Chaos don't really need to specialize for even more long range power.

Alternately get rammed by an Ork battleship and complain that Orks are broken.

The BFG:A equivalent is usually half the TT amount of launch bays. The Despoiler has 8, in-game it has 4. The Devastation has 4, in BFGA it has 2. There are exceptions though.

There is matchmaking but it only really works if a large number of players are looking for matches at any given moment, so that there's a pool of various Elo scores to choose from. That isn't the case with a niche game.
