Pretty sure TC followed soon after ABS - as soon as you have wheel speed sensors and the ability to apply brakes individually via ABS controller, it's just a code upload to get lovely first-gen TC going

BMW livery best livery. Is there some significance to them doing the singular angular stripe across the car? Because that is my favorite.

Found some info on this on the 924/944/968 parts group FB page.

"its a 944 turbo with a 924 kit. Cayman/boxster transaxle. (pics https://imgur.com/a/sYlAT/ ) I have to check but the motor is upgraded as well. https://i.imgur.com/k3w8htl.jpg

The car started as a late model Porsche 944 Turbo body. After a ton of cutting, lightening, and race prep, it's now been fitted with a 924GTP kit with the full one piece nose. The powerplant is one from our newest projects, we're working on a full swap kit for placing 1.8T Audi 5VT engines in the 944 platform. This car will have a heavily built motor prepped to make about 600HP through a Borg Warner EFR turbo, with a Cayman/Boxster cable shift gearbox out back. All while weighing about 1900LBS ready to race. This one still needs a few finishing things to be a running car but we aren't far off. Motor Werks Racing: Exclusively Porsche on facebook for more of this and our other cars."

Speaking of 944s with Audi 5cyl engines thrown into them... :getin:

I'm loving that. I've had a few old cars with that bronzey paint, mainly fords, and it always looked a little boring to me, like a "metallic beige" or boring metallic brown.
Seeing that though, and the escort above, make me know what I'm going to do when I come into ownership of another old car.

Clearly the best thing to do would be to get Broadfoot racing to build a turbo version of the 944 S2 or 968 3.0 motor.

From what I've seen, the 16V heads are beasts. Or heck, a 928 V8 would be acceptable too - saw one at a Kelly Moss open house once. Actually, now I'm imagining someone going the other way and putting a 968 engine in an A4 or something.

Yeah, whilst the 16V 3.0s in the S2 and 968 are really sturdy engines, there's a fair bit of work required to make it accept a turbo. Camshaft and Connecting rods from a turbo (forged parts) and also an 8V wiring loom are both on that list.

Although, I imagine a small turbo with very low boost would be acceptable. I've explored the idea of turboing my S2 but frankly the cost and risks involved made me nervous, and for a 210hp engine it's a pretty quick car as it is.

E: Just watched Project Binky 12. My god, that exhaust is going to be a loud instrument. Also, nobody should anger Mr. Flibble.

Building and turboing the 16V 944/968 engine seems a lot less work than swapping in and building a 20V 1.8T though, and it'll get you something that's not, you know, poo poo.

Ah well, enough of this derail.

Fleet vehicles can have some really wacky feature sets in an effort to save a few bucks.

I had a 2008 Yaris for a while that didn't have ABS either. No power locks or windows either, I loving loved that car because it probably would have run for 20 years given how little there was on it that could break. Then some jerk hit me.

well, compared to something like large aircraft brake systems, yeah, i'd agree with that assessment

multi-plate disc brakes with full-circle friction materials, capable of slowing an airliner from takeoff speed to a stop without overrunning the runway AND not catching fire in the several minutes it takes for firetrucks to arrive.

compared to that, yeah, F1 cars with their ceramic rotors and pads on an otherwise conventional setup aren't really all that exotic.
