I don't think the Gorillaz have ever put out a "bad" album, just ones that sound and feel quite different than others. (Daft Punk too, for that matter)

I read something yeeeeeeaaaaaars ago that credited Grandmaster Flash with making hip hop (or at least MCing) as a national thing as opposed to a transient youth culture phenomenon in some cities. It also said that he built his turntables from salvaged components of broken, discarded turntables. Since reading that, I've had this vision of the guy summoning a whole expressive style, that has endured and matured for decades since, with nothing but his own creative force and a tohu va bohu junk heap. It's way more great man theory of history than I go in for intellectually, but it's such a rad myth that I can't help but love it, and have myth as an unshakable foundation for my old man appreciation of hip hop.

The evolution of hip hop from its early days of DJs trying to hype up the party as they played the hook of a great song over and over to what it became is such an awesome story of art being born from the most underground of places.

Wax's bro is Herbal T, right? I don't think he even did any lead vocals in MacGregor, just played guitar. And I don't think 2SJ's are still around, unless they got back together. I was picking up their albums whenever they dropped, but with the rise of iTunes and other methods of buying music, I could have just lost them in the shuffle. On a semi-related note, Hip Hop Family Tree is pretty awesome. Just be aware that it doesn't really flow as a continuous narrative. It will be talking about Sugar Hill one minute, and then jump to Russell Simmons with no transition. I think the books are pieced together from previously published small strips, so that's probably explains the jarring cuts.
