back to keyboars, i've been looking for a solution for mac havers at the office that includes a cac style reader and cherry has a bunch, but a lot of them also have credit card readers and i don't even want to imagine the driver hell i'd jump into trying to implement that under osx

most USB card readers (and barcode readers) just pretend to be keyboards and send keystrokes

most will generate control characters before and after so you can filter the input, and let you customize that easily (a little coding to send packets to the device for card readers, barcode readers often just have a sheet you can scan to change things)

cherry should have technical info available on how their stuff is set up

OS X doesnt even ship with any tokend support for this so you gotta install CACKey or OpenSC or whatever. I did it, and it's a pain, because some pkcs11 tokend providers dont support certain readers. It's not even drivers, its the loving pkcs11 support.

the usb mag stripe reader my crm/sales thing webapp company sent me just dumps the card info into the computer as plaintext. if you're on the CC input webapp screen it puts it into the right fields (fills name, CC#, exp, then u have to tyupe the CVV) but if u tab to notepad or w/e it just pastes it into there. pretty epic

It would be really light and I think it'd feel cheap. Maybe if you put metal weights in the bottom to keep it in one place.

Good point. Hard to answer since I'm sure you could pick a density and thickness of plastic to be heavier or lighter than whatever number of layers of carbon fiber.

credit card readers are often just hid devices

you swipe the card and it emits keypresses for the data

kinda wasn't clear, the cc reader isn't required and frankly i see it as just another way coffee will inevitably gently caress up the boar

the other reader is of interest, most of us have card readers in our laptops but because of a loving boyd policy the people that either went cheap or went mac need something external

kind of out of scope for the kb thread though, is there some other hardware thread i should poke at for stuff like this?
