If SNK story stuff interests you, the heart of it is in the Art of Fighting and Fatal Fury games, and the story-relevant chronological order for this is AoF1, 2 and 3, then FF1 (which is overriden by Fatal Fury Wild Ambition, if you can get it), FF2, FF3, Real Bout and Garou. The Last Blade series in is continuity with these BTW. For KoF it's release order and you can leave out 98, 2002 and XII, with story arcs peaking at 97, 2001 and XIII, although the arc from 99 to 2001 is among the poorest in the series. Mind you, story relevance doesn't always equate with technical excellence - there's a lot of love for KoFs 98 and 2002 as well as Real Bout 2. Cerecopter is harder to get used to as a new player for mixups, and LnL is already the better assist in most cases + good coverage against other assists anyways. Cerecopter is good for Filia but as a duo LnL is the way to go for the neutral assist. Copter is okay for Fukua but not really the best.

Fukua has good neutral on top level, but for people learning the game, Fukua isn't going to steam roll anything and needs a neutral assist about the same as any other character. Copter isn't a good learning tool because the last hit always makes conversions hard (especially for new players) and mixups in general are harder to grasp for people starting ou because of SG's options. It's a good assist that will end up feeling very meh when they have no concept of when to call assists, and unlike LnL there are a lot less times where you can call copter. LnL is the perfect "call it to keep yourself safe" in almost any situation including mixups cause armor usually blows up most every counter attempt from normal reversals (character dependent) or people mashing on assist so you get the best counter call. You're REALLY overestimating how good cerecopter is as a newbie tool imo, since from my experience trying to use it when I started out or trying to get other new players to use it always lead to people not understanding anything and watching the opponent fly away on the last hit of copter, where as LnL was clearly the assist that just made sense for how good and simple it is. I would tell people not to use copter in very much the same way I would tell new Parasoul players to *not* convert off of throw with H Bike or tell new Eliza players to use H Servant for the grab despite them being of very great use. While on high level they have very good applications, converting off of them is something that takes a long while to get used to because of how awkward they usually are, and would instead prefer to tell people to use other more simple tools until they have a good grasp of the characters. I decided to step my game up and get my first stick (hori rap v3) and try to learn something properly. I was into SFIV but played with a pad, and Capcom are having some hard times making sensible decisions lately so what game should I start with? none of the videos in this thread make any drat sense to me

A stick won't make you a better player. If you've spent your entire life playing on pad, you should probably stick with that. Also, try Killer Instinct. It is a good and fun game.

No, really, Brosnan did a good job adressing your question (and the stick thing too). See what type of game appeals to you and try out one of his suggestions. SFV is the vanilla option - it´s simple, you can find players everywhere and it will teach you the basics of any fighting game.

I'm managing to pull off things far more reliably with the stick than the pad, except DPs. I think I do prefer it. I tried KI but I have no idea how these mechanics work and it feels like we're just trading combos lol And yeah, I bought and have played a bit of SFV but the netcode is really bad and lacks any real singleplayer so I don't play it much. I tried SF3 on fightcade and got owned

I find stick's to be better with pads as having your fingers hover over a button to press it is faster than using a thumb and shoulder buttons. Though the split micro-second delay in response won't be too hindering if at all. Fighting games aren't like Star Craft where they require godlike reaction time and KPM. I would at least recommend trying out a stick for a month or so to see how well it fits you.

Even though I never played in the arcades and mostly used pads or keyboard/mouse all my life, when I started playing SFIV, I found it way easier on stick. The problem is the last console I had that required me to use the d-pad instead of the analog stick was the Super Nintendo. I was not really used to using the d-pad and found analog sticks to be very unreliable in terms of inputs, especially the diagonals. Also if you use them for a while your thumb begins to hurt. I don't think the if you used pad to play video games all your life the stick won't make things better argument is really valid.

I'm in a really weird situation with fighting game controls. I grew up with the NES and SNES as my consoles (yes I'm old), so the + pad is what I know best, especially since I played a TON of street fighter on the SNES. I never got into 6th or 7th gen console gaming, so analog sticks are completely alien to me. With motion characters, I do best with something like a fight pad, and basically never use shoulder buttons. Charge characters cause me crippling pain (no I am not kidding) after about 15 minutes on pad, so I have to use a stick to play those. For USF4 I mained Vega, so I used a stick, but for SFV, I switched back to pad because I did better with that. If I end up picking up Guile and he's a charge character, I'll have to switch controllers to play as him. KI doesn't require pad, because there are no charge characters.
