In Bravely Second you have to choose between the old classes. You get the chance to get the other classes later in the game. Here is a list of what I think you should choose for the easiest time. Chapter 1 1. Red Mage vs. Thief. Pick Red Mage, you get a thief knife in the same dungeon so the main job of thief is dealt with easily and Red Mage is a huge power boost over Wizard. You don't get level 5 or 6 white and black magic spells for ages so it retains its utility deep into the game. The big key is that it gives you Aspir very early on, which means you can devour mana pretty easily without running out. Also it allows for crazy BP recovery shenanigans later in the game. 2. Summoner vs Swordmaster. Pick Summoner. You'll notice most of the time I lean very heavily on magic, this is because Spellcraft completely breaks magic and the game over its knee. Swordmaster doesn't offer much beyond a 33% damage increase if you attack four times with a Brave. Summoner basically gives you level 3 elemental magic early in the game and can hit to close to 9999 mid Chapter 3. It's amazing. Chapter 2 3. Merchant vs. White Mage. White Mage, but pick your preference, Merchant is near worthless, it doesn't have leverage any more and you shouldn't be that low on money in this game. White Mage is stronger but is outpaced by bishop. That said it does give you access to air magic which is fairly useful even with summoner. 4. Ranger vs. Black Mage. Coin Toss, Black Mage gets you pierce M. Def from it which amps magic damage significantly, but its utility is in later chapters when you can just have both and it's outpaced by Red Mage's utility and Wizard's intelligence otherwise. Ranger because it enables Berserk farming so you can level jobs quickly, but otherwise it's not that great. 5. Knight vs. Ninja. Ninja. I used to think this was clearly Knight for 2 handed, but I realised that 2 handed is completely worthless in this game because of how good magic is. Dual wield is basically the only physical ability that lets physical classes keep up with magic, since it works with triple and quad wield to amplify damage from all weapons and Ninja's utility beyond that with Karai and Utsememi means that it has a good niche in damage mitigation. Chapter 3 6. Monk vs. Valkyrie. Monk, it's sad but Valk is completely worthless in this game. The class appears too late to do anything and without spellsword the dragoon style, 2 handed valk build just doesn't hit hard enough. With Monk you at least get access to hilarious dual wield / quad wield / knuckle lore builds that hit like a goddamn truck. 7. Performer vs. Pirate. Performer, but they're both good. That said, all of pirate's utility is actually encompassed by patissier which can provide the same debuffs, but no class you have at the time can perform all party buffs the same way performer can, unless you're doing Astrologian/Spellcraft which takes up twice the BP for a slightly enhanced effect and uses at both slots on a character. 8. Time Mage vs. Dark Knight. Time Mage. This choice is largely irrelevant given the point you're at in the game when it happens. You'll be able to get both pretty shortly after. Time Magic at least enables mass haste when combined with spellcraft which is valuable and Time Mage is also the best lategame class by an absolute mile for damage. Dark Knight honestly doesn't offer much because where it was the highest damage dealing class in default it's blown completely out of the water by Time Mage and Meteor Rain. So yeah, all the choice. Feel free to disagree. Oh and for posterity, if people ask about party composition. Here is a party that you can grind up relatively easily in chapter 5 and that should see you through the game fairly easily. I've made it diverse so as not to make the game that boring to play, so it's not optimal, but it's good. Patissier/Performer. BP Recovery, Status Ailment Amp, Item for All, Prolong Support, Limit Breaker. Equipment is anything that increases agility, a staff and a shield. Your limit breaks should programmed to come up based on item usage. This is the core of any team in my mind. Confectionery items are cheap to buy and you're rolling in money by chapter 5. This is the same as the red mage BP battery back in default. Since Patissier is a fast class, you apply Poison pastry to your whole party 3 times, to generate 3 BP from BP recovery and then let the attacks roll in. After you do this twice you'll have generated enough points to be able to use a level 1 staff limit break. This generates 2 BP on its own, giving you an extra BP to spend on buff spells from Performer or Debuffs from Patissier as is your preference. Wizard/Time Mage. BP Recovery, Pierce M.Def (Replace with Consecutive Magic when you get it), MAttack +20%. Equipment, Dual Wield Rods, anything to increase agility or M.Attack. This one's really easy. You brave four times, click Meteor Rain twice and watch your opponent die. Occasionally for really tough ones you might cast reraise blast first and for the hardest you might choose to also cast Hastega on your first turn. Time Mage is completely bonkers. Wizard is just there because it has high int and carries spellcraft as a basic ability. Exorcist/Bishop. BP Recovery, Epic Group Cast, Spellcraft. Equipment, Staff and Shield, make sure you keep this one's MDef low because it can end up too high. This allows your Wizard/Time Mage to keep attacking for free by undoing MP and allows you to cast Ressurect Mist so that if a party member dies they come back the next turn on full HP. Combined with your Time mage this means your party needs to be fully wiped twice in one turn to die. Ninja/Pirate. BP recovery, Triple Wield, Multitask, Frenetic Fighting, Precognition. Equip with anything that has high damage and anything to improve agility for attacks per round. This is one that I like, it hits hard for physical damage, as in hard enough to wipe out normal packs on its own and is a good enough tank and provides an alternate source of debuffs, specifically Shin smash to debuff speed when your Patissier is occupied with BP recovery. Precognition is there because it has to go somewhere to stop your party from being randomly murdered by normal enemies. Cast Ikkikasei and then attack three times each turn to hit for around 40k damage to a single enemy each turn.

Rangpur posted:So, should I be prioritizing upgrading my MOON BATTLESHIP? I did, up to about level 10 - that provides a power of 20. The time to delevel a Ba'al one level seems to be 100 hours divided by the total power, so my ship alone would take about 5 hours to delevel. Two ships like that? 2 and a half hours. That's a pretty good pace, honestly. If you have enough people to make the work really quick it might be worth the effort. It also still functions as a labor sink once everything else is fully upgraded. Which is nice, since Bravely Default didn't leave you much to do when Norende was rebuilt. This first Ba'al is pushing my poo poo in. I had access to Holy-elemental damage when I did this fight in the demo and it was great but without it I don't seem to have an effective fast way to kill the shadows he summons much less himself, what am I missing? (hopefully it still involves having weapons on everyone's heads)

You can also have three characters use the Dig option four times, then have your slowest character Run. Put encounters to 100% and place yourself in a low-level area and go to town.
