The immediate result was a catastrophic work shortage in the fruit industry--no "real Americans" were willing to put in those grueling hours for that pitiful pay, so an enormous amount of the Georgian crop rotted in the fields that year and the losses were enormous.

So in not-really-email-foreward-but-related-family-discourse, I've argued with my mom in the past about incarceration rates and the treatment of minority groups in the United States. She claims it doesn't happen and that my source (SPLC, Amnesty International, DOJ) all make money and have an agenda that benefits from having people believe racism isn't a problem and it doesn't exist. She cites stuff from police websites, police department states and LEO-affiliated sources, along with personal experience growing up in a relatively high crime, high poverty area and seeing black and Hispanic classmates succeed based on their work as evidence that it's not an issue and doesn't exist and that my sources are the bad, biased ones. Is there any rebuttal to this or is it best to just leave it be since it's one of the only big areas we disagree? It's a drat shame too, as she's fairly progressive on gay and transgender rights, religious expression, taxation and labor all things considered.

Sorry, but no. There is effectively no "Market Wage" people are willing to accept to subject themselves to the grueling work of picking crops. Hell, even when they tried to use prison labor and massively increased those wages compared to other "jobs" the prisoners could do they chose to stay in prison and make no money or way less money. quote:Many farmers want to hire local workers, but it is increasingly difficult to find U.S. natives with the proper skills. Few are willing or able to perform the physically taxing and low paying labor which requires them to move with the crops, even with wages of $15-$20 an hour. Georgia recently experimented with creating a program that allowed parolees to work as farm laborers, but it was unsuccessful when they wouldn’t — or couldn’t — endure the grueling days. No one wants to pick crops. It is such a hard job and the amount of food that needs to be picked is so great, that there is no point at which labor costs balance to allow farmers to make money. This is one of those areas where raising the cost of labor does produce that mythical $15 big mac. Only it's your blueberries and peaches. A very large portion of the US produce market is only able to survive off of what is effectively slave labor.

I work with a bunch of democrats and one libertarian. Yet a large portion of them seem to think that some jobs should just pay poo poo wages as a matter of course still. It's very frustrating. I have heard these same people lauding the work ethics of Mexicans because of that scenario that played out with doing away with immigrant labor. You know, if our society as a whole depends on a particular kind of labor, then I think we should pay well for it despite the skills or lack thereof (usually perceived only) that the job takes. But then they argue that prices will go up! Workers will be laid off! Small business will go out of business! I don't believe any of this is true, but on Friday a coworker waved the newspaper at me and told me "So it turns out it's not working in Seattle already!" in response to something I had said earlier in the week. Then he told me unemployment was going up in the PNW. Is that even true? I was too busy to sit and read the paper with him. God drat it I'm at work, I'm working. At my old job I had two coworkers on my team, one was very liberal, the other was very conservative. Listening to them argue was great. One point that the liberal made that I'm still trying to work out is that we probably pay too little for most produce or manufactured goods, and that maybe strawberries shouldn't be a dollar a pound considering the amount of work that goes into producing them and how little the workers themselves get paid. We tend to take for granted that a banana has to be shipped several hundred if not thousands of miles before we can buy them for literal pennies at the supermarket, meanwhile the workers who produced those same bananas are probably being paid what we would consider to be slave wages. What do y'all think?

I moved to Japan seven years ago, and I will tell you it was pretty jarring seeing the price of produce and manufactures here. Everything is much much more expensive, but the quality is excellent in my opinion. Food is also seasonal; good luck getting oranges or strawberries off season (else you pay $7 bucks for a small package). Hell, EVERYTHING is more expensive. A glass of draught beer is usually priced at $5, craft beers are $8-$10, a large head of broccoli is $2.50, one bell pepper is $1.50, good condoms (10 pack) are $12-$15, a night out to dinner is ~$30-$40. The cheapest train ticket (4-5 mins stop away) is about $1.50. Cabs are $6.50 for the first 2 kms or so. My apartment is 45 square meters and I pay ~$670 a month, not including utilities. That said, I'm very comfortable here.
