Edit: It's actually really interesting to look at Trump's history of "success" on Wikipedia. His very first venture was investing nearly half his net worth in a Broadway comedy that flopped badly, and it took him only 5 years from graduating college to get investigated by the Justice Department for conspiring to deny housing to racial minorities. From the beginning, he's been a general failure as an actual businessman and all of his "success" was built on the backs of a lot of other people.

No. It would be more like 17 cents more for a Big Mac. A company that goes under because it has to pay its employees a livable wage probably wasn't a very successful company in the first place.

Of course the other side of this is that these pay increases are added in gradually, so fast food restaurants have plenty of time to figure out how to pay for these newfound raises. Like replacing cashiers with touch screens and chat bots. A 15/hour minimum wage is our best hope for some Blade Runner style AI before 2019.

They're already installing those in local McDonalds, and I really doubt they've replaced a single worker. They will still need people to you know, cook the food and hand it to you. Not to mention that the majority of people who eat at McDonalds could never figure out how to use a touch interface meal selector, so they still need cashiers to take orders manually.

Then there's the added bonus where instead of paying a kid 15 bucks an hour to take an order, your paying a technician 60 bucks an hour to drive around fixing those drat things when a kid inevitably jams a pickle in the credit card slot.

(I'm totally for the touch ordering, I love it, I just doubt they are saving vast fortunes by having them)

One of the Brosnan-era directors agreed with it, but his movie was the one with the invisible car, so maybe don't consider that a big one.

That theory works because it's on the same level that the movies are working from, though, it wouldn't be a turn out of place in the movies themselves. Good fan theories work like that; bad fan theories are like that Aladdin one. There's better takes on that theory that are a little closer to reasonable given the universe of the movie, but ultimately they still face the same issue that they're pulling poo poo out of their rear end to justify a silly fourth-wall breaking character that breaks the rules of reality anyway.

It also takes a hit because of Skyfall talking about his past as James Bond and updated theories jump through far too many hoops to make it work. It's a neat idea though.

For content I searched Idris Elba playing James Bond on Facebook.

They don't have to save a vast fortune. Just enough to minimize price increases and keep profit margins the same. If your $60/hour tech handles a zone with 10 restaurants and each restaurant can eliminate 4 employees per day through automation then all you're doing is waiting for the hardware to pay for itself.

I was reading somewhere that staff levels have stayed the same at restaurants with computer ordering, but customer satisfaction is way up, since now they pay all those people to check up on customers and make sure everything is good, and fix it if it's not. Turns out that letting a computer do work a computer can frees your people to do customer service that requires a personal touch and makes the customers much happier.

How does no one ever bring up the fact that if Minimum Wage goes up, the people working in lovely minimum wage jobs will still have the same problems that make their jobs ultimately bad: low hours offered/bad hours and lack of benefits due to not being full-time employees.

Yes, that $15 will help a lot of people in a lot of ways, but doing an apple-to-apples comparison with someone working in the trades is bullshit. I wouldn't theoretically quit my $14/hr 40hr/week job with benefits to go flip burgers 15 hours a week (which would be split up in 5x 3hr days in a wacky schedule all so you don't get a mandated break/lunch hour).

I get that. Kind of like gas stations with pay-at-the-pump options. We still have the same number of clerks because businesses realized they could sell us Big Gulps and scratch-off tickets. I just don't know how well that'll translate in other service industries; especially in places where people shop based on low prices.
