Mister Beeg posted:Jack Ohman also legitimately pissed off Rick Perry over this cartoon: https://www.washingtonpost.com/blog...c6f44_blog.html They were trying to do the standard "Our hearts go to the disaster victims, but don't actually ask us to question the policies we support that lead to it or actually DO anything for them. The important part is praying for them then doing nothing" and blaming the cartoonist for not falling in line and being disrespectful. I think getting a politician of that national prominence to tilt is "winning" as a political cartoonist.

loquacius posted:How exactly does the whole EU thing break down in Britain w/r/t partisan politics? Like, I think if America was in the same position the left wing would want to stay in because solidarity with our allies and doing our part for the greater global community etc etc etc, and the right wing would want to leave because Murica stands alone and gently caress Europe they're all pinkos anyway Like the Republicans, the Conservatives are an uneasy alliance between a leadership composed mostly of pro-business neo-liberals and a voting base of older, less-urban voters mostly concerned about immigration. The leadership therefore loves the EU because it's great for the banking sector that's propping up the rest of our economy and immigration keeps wages down, but they've been happy to let the right-wing press bash the EU for the last few years because it makes for a convenient lightning rod. Unfortunately for them, the pro-EU conservatives seem to have naively assumed that the press would fall in line as the referendum approached, but if anything the papers have become even more stridently pro-Brexit in order to show Cameron who's boss (see also the pigfucker story). The Cabinet has split down the middle leaving Cameron and his heir apparent Osborne (and others including Jeremy Hunt, hence the 'country McC-' in the cartoon) fighting a lackluster Remain campaign versus Boris Johnson, Michael Gove ('Scrotey McScroteface' in the cartoon) and UKIP leading various different Leave campaigns. Labour have also been fairly divided, albeit mostly behind the scenes because the press are more interested in the Tory implosion - one the one hand, the EU is all for things like TITP, austerity economics and tax havens, but on the other hand it's probably the only thing stopping the Conservatives tearing up every remaining environmental and labour regulation in the UK. Corbyn recently gave a speech putting Labour firmly behind Remain, so it's more or less been settled although you'll still hear a few left-wing voices arguing for Brexit. e: thread moves on, UrbicaMortis answered well, so it goes. also lol at that word filter

Thanks for the breakdown of UK politics, guys, that was really interesting honestly, Wise's apparent "being trans is real if and only if you have the operation" and "acceptance of trans people is inevitable but America isn't ready " views are both more progressive attitudes than we've seen anyone else on that side of the aisle take still not, y'know, good opinions or anything, but surprisingly less terrible than expected from the guy whose #1 most important issue is that we're not beating our children as much as we used to
