You get a single t5 freebie ship.

If you're a chintz, your first T6 is gonna be the one they give away for the summer event.

You can still buy the lockbox boobie prize ships off the exchange relatively cheap... they tend towards 10-odd million a pop these days but even that's only a few days of play tops for a complete newbie selling drops for credits. Find a decent one, spend another 15m for a T5U upgrade token, and you're basically set until you can get a freebie T6 event ship or something.

And yes it's incredibly obnoxious how new players no longer get an actual endgame ship for free while leveling, but nobody seems to have complained loudly enough for Cryptic to give a gently caress.

So, I'm in a position to grab some Embassy consoles to get those sweet plasma explosions happening with my Paradox.

Given how heavily I've specced into Exotic Particle Generators/Gravity Well, it's pretty much a no brainer for me to buy the EPG boosting consoles. The question is, do I go with + or - threat? Does it even make too much of a difference?

Do you use reciprocity? If so get +threat, if not get -threat. That said, with anything approaching a competent build you will be pulling agro in most stfs over pubs.

Oh, I guess you do! For some reason I thought T4 was the last free one.

Anyway! I'm thinking of just buying a T6 from the C-Store when I hit the appropriate level since up to this point STO has been very entertaining for like no money at all (except for what I apparently spent on cosmetic items like three+ years ago) but I'm a bit overwhelmed by all the choices. Should I just pick whatever T6 I think looks coolest, or are there any ships in particular that I should be looking at as a Federation engineer?

I think the two best choices for 'good ship and good trait' are the intel escort and the battlecruiser. The escort is an escort and gives a trait that reduces your cooldowns when enemies miss - which basically means that you don't need any other cooldown bonuses - and the battlecruiser has a 5/3 weapons loadout and a trait that increases the firing rate of your weapons.

Honestly I'd say the best T6 c-store picks at the moment are probably...

Phantom Intel Escort: The famous reciprocity trait, and it's basically an uglier defiant with the cloak as a freebie instead of a console and access to intel skills. Probably the best cstore escort to fly after...
Icarus Pilot Escort: Subwarp Sheath trait, less critical than a lot but still really good. Probably the best cstore escort plus it gets that pilot barrel roll crap.
Presidio Command Battlecruiser: The All hands on Deck trait, another one of those really traits especially if you're tac and love short APA cooldowns. Also just generally a solid ship all around that's both really durable and still high damage, even if it isn't as thrilling as some of the competition.
Arbiter Battlecruiser: Astoundingly good trait - you're going to want EPTW with as close to 100% uptime as you can get anyway - and just a great all around ship. The 5/3 layout and high mobility opens some options other cruisers don't have access to too, like making it a dual beam bank psuedo-escort. Probably my personal pick if you're buying a single c-store boat, but I have a fondness for nimble cruisers.

The Odysseys? Eh, they're... alright? They're really not appreciably different from the T5 ones honestly, relatively durable but really slow with a flexible boff layout. They're rather middle of the road, though at least the science version still keeps the sensor analysis. The tac version's trait is great if you use torpedoes but pointless if you don't, and the other two traits are completely forgettable. You can do a lot worse (T6 Galaxy and Excelsior...) but if you have to have one they'll work well enough? I'd personally grab an Arbiter, Eclipse, or even the Yamato (no really, the T6 one's actually pretty alright thanks to the lt.com tac seat) first.

Wise decision.

And yeah, the arbiter is just the perfect combo of astounding trait and great ship. And personally I like the arbiter hull, fleet pylons, and avenger everything else. :v:

-Troika- posted:

They do different things. Reciprocity reduces Tac/Intel skill cooldowns, while AHOD reduces Science and Captain skill cooldowns. Reciprocity is probably the more useful of the two, but AHOD works crazy well with tac captains since you can cut like half the cooldown off attack pattern alpha, let alone all the other skills.
