In the Campaign I'm naming several ships after "Famous Ships of the Gothic War" in the original tabletop rule book, such as Baron Surtur and Incendrius. A few others are named after ships from Passage Watch 27-Est (aka Battlefleet Koronus) from the Rogue Trader RPG such as Swiftsure and Sirius (Bonus points for the latters profile mentioning it was a veteran of the Gothic War). And a last couple are named after ships from a Rogue Trader game I played in for several years. Absolution and Saint Drusus' Fire. Too bad we can't name escorts then again Destroyer of All Boundaries probably wouldn't fit. Even in the RPG we knew the best way to deal with Eldar arrogance was to smash a triple-layered, adamantine armored prow into their dainty faces.

I'm convinced the reason favors cost more for the bigger ships is the paint. A battleship is what, 10 kilometers long? That's a lot of paint.

The music for this game was getting repetitive so I made a Pandora station from Toccata and Fugue in D Minor and it's fairly appropriate. Also, Gothic Chant strangely enough. It's mostly in minor keys. Arglebargle III fucked around with this message at 21:52 on Apr 24, 2016 |

You know, the automation for skills is pretty good. If I set the torpedoes to be automatic, by the time I usually want to fire, the AI has already fired them. Nova cannons also respond very well but they have a habit of taking the shot despite friendlies. I just figured that it was very thematic to the theme, may the Emperor forgive all those Dauntless kills my Dominators seem to get. Good thing something heavier always goes up with them.

It makes the game really newbie friendly and casual, which is imo a good thing. Sure it's not the best automation, but a shield used to block 20 damage or whatever is probably better than me being too busy to use it, ever, and absorbing no damage!

I spent the better half of Sunday playing games with Octamurk. I started with a level 1 Retribution that I wanted to rank up, to see if the buffs had made it any better. 32 matches later, I ended up with this monster: The Crown of Destiny is unstoppable. It has chewed through nearly half a dozen Chaos battleships and countless smaller vessels. It even killed an Eldar battleship (with some help). The only time it ran into serious trouble was when an Ork battleship with a full compliment of boarding torpedos and launch bays destroyed literally every system on the sship (weapons, everything), forcing it to warp out while OctaMurk sacrified his entire fleet to save it for me. But that was before I got the Astartes favour and Belt Armour so things might be different next time.

Is anyone having trouble with crashing? Twice now the games given an error and stopped, which wouldn't be so much of a problem except that it seems to count those missions as losses and advance the campaign. I've lost both of the artifacts that way and it's frustrating me.

Just rolled a 300 point breakthrough attacker against Eldar. No problem, just get some light cruisers and smash through their defenses, right? WRONG. Turns out I got an AI ally who brought a Gothic and Dauntless, and the Eldar brought a battleship, battlecruiser, cruiser and a couple of escorts. Naturally the AI Gothic was useless and their pulsars tore us to shreds.

Are cruiser/battlecruiser lances messed up in value? Looking at the BCs it seems like their dorsal lances are equivalent to an entire broadside from a Gothic, and twice as powerful as a Lunar's broadside lances.

Ran into my first cheater in the MP while playing a 2v2 with a friend That cruiser has 8+ upgrades, and 4 or possibly more skills(SS got cut off a bit). He also managed to deploy a cruiser and 3 LCs into a 300 point game. Me and friend utterly wrecked his fleet though because his teammate(who wasn't cheating) deployed elsewhere and focused on killing platforms instead of us. Game gets down to the wire with all my ships destroyed or warped out and all of the cheater Imperials as well. Just Orks vs Orks at this point but my friend is way out of position and the last of the platforms go down. The enemy Ork makes for the escape zone with his last 2 line ships. One makes it out and we figure the game is lost because the 2nd one is on the other side of the map. Cut to screen of said Ork ship warping out and VICTORY plastered over our screens. Poor bastard warped out at the last second instead of just crossing the finish line which gives us the win. I'm not sure if it was an accident or the dude purposefully gave us the win but either way it was extremely satisfying.

Elderbean posted:What's generally a good fleet makeup for single player? Any tips on what to do with escorts/frigates/destroyers? Against chaos you want options to fight at range, and a mix of guns and lances. Against Eldar you want more guns and less lances. Against Orks you want launch bays and lances. I think you want your points concentrated in the mostest biggestest ships possible as long as you can complete the objectives. Sometimes that means taking four light cruisers, sometimes a battleship and two cruisers. Torpedoes are really good for beating down huge tough slow ships from beyond their range. Torpedoes are good against everything and once you figure out how to use them are the imperial Admiral's ace in the hole. Frigates are good for covering your rear, scouting and covering convoy objectives. Destroyers are kinda bad because in tabletop you would take them as squadrons and only do scouting and combined torpedo salvos. In this game you pay a big attention tax for Cobra destroyers and it's probably not worth the micro.

Voss Pattern and +Shields on Sword (gunship) escorts with either Macro AP or Range. I normally take 3 ships of the line and then fill in the rest with Swords. Firestorm you do the same thing except take a Lance upgrade instead of a turret upgrade. Actually, on pretty much everything less than Battlecruiser Voss and the +Shields is great. Light Cruiser base shields: 100 EHP Light Cruiser with Voss and +Shields: 266 EHP Escort base shields: 50 EHP Escort with Voss and + Shields: 133 EHP Your basic 1+1=3 game math.

Shooting and maneuvering etc feel great in this, but I wish there wasnt quite as much Tabletop faithfulness regarding the melee/boarding aspect. It just being dice rolls is kinda missing the opportunity for some cool poo poo, but then again I guess it has alot of potential to get too complicated anyways. Like rather than having it be a Succeed/Fail roll, it'd be cool if you could send troops and they'd form a baseline to assault with them fighting vs the target ship's crew over time, with you able to send reinforcements etc to refresh the attacking party. So rather than just your ships farting out en masse, you get a sustained series of ships exchanged with assault troops vs the enemy. Break contact/range with the enemy, and their boarding guys wont get any reinforcements and rapidly lose men to the ship holder. Dandywalken fucked around with this message at 03:44 on Apr 25, 2016 |

Eh I think that's out of scale for this game. Even a frigate has somewhere between 20 and 30 thousand crew. And in 40K it's not like surrender is a realistic option. If the action became hopeless the enginseers would blow up the (holy) ship rather than see it captured by traitors or aliens.

Perhaps check server logs for obviously unbalanced profile attributes? It would be great if they could detect a manipulated profile prior to being matched up, but wonder if that's too much to ask. Or maybe if they implement a ladder system they can build in some cheat detection with it. I hope they also add the ability to invite friends into a game. nnnotime fucked around with this message at 04:06 on Apr 25, 2016 |

Elderbean posted:What's generally a good fleet makeup for single player? Any tips on what to do with escorts/frigates/destroyers? Here's an example of what I beat the Campaign with on Normal. For 600 point games I just took the Emperor and 2 Dominators, and for 700 point games I took both Mars and 2 Dominators. Depending on how good you are, early on you can grab some easy bonus renown by just taking Capital ships and not filling up the extra points with escorts, usually this means using something like a Dominator and a Dauntless light cruiser for those 300 point missions. If you do choose to use Ordnance Bays, use the Reload command on auto to speed up the cooldown on the Bombers .

Yeah i was thinking voss+regen because even 100 shields get taken down super fast and things like disruption bombs wound render those shields moot. Compared to just gaining those shields back faster. The firestorm is a better choice overall i say though because of its accuracy. You can focus on survivability upgrades and instead of having 2 AP turrets you now have 1 AP turret that is 100% accurate at all engagement ranges. You have to deal with the front arc but you'll most likely be chasing people most of the time anyhow and you can set it to broadside which will cause it to swing the lance around. In the end 6k 100% accuracy against eldar, chaos, and orks. All of which you'll either be 6k away or want to.
