It's quite possible if you live in a suburb with a large migrant population. Typically it is the older relatives who come over and hang out with the other migrants in the community. I live near Hurstville, and about 2/3 of the population were born overseas, and half of the population are of Chinese ancestry. I've even been in a store where the clerk didn't speak English and wrote prices down on paper for me.

Zika has affected many pacific islands already, even way before Brazil back in 2007.

"The Pacific: The first documented outbreak of Zika virus in the Pacific occurred on Yap Island in the Federated States of Micronesia in 2007. In October 2013, French Polynesia reported its first outbreak, which then spread to other Pacific Islands. At present in our region, Fiji, Samoa, American Samoa, Marshall Islands, New Caledonia and Tonga are reported as having ongoing transmission."

New Caledonia is the closer to Australia than Nauru is, but outbreaks can come from anywhere. It all comes down to preventing transmission from not being bitten by mosquitoes in the first place/ disrupting the mosquito life-cycle.

Remember that kid who got arrested for terrorism on ANZAC day?

http://www.theguardian.com/australia-news/2016/apr/27/police-ran-online-sting-against-sydney-boy-charged-with-anzac-day-terrorism-plot?CMP=soc_567 posted:

New South Wales police were running an online sting against 16-year-old charged with terrorism offences while at the same time working to “deradicalise” him through an official program, it has emerged.

Experts who advise the government and police on violent extremism say the revelations are a “huge risk to the integrity” of the deradicalisation programs, likening it to officers posing as drug dealers outside a police-run drug rehabilitation facility.

Guardian Australia understands that police will allege the Sydney teenager – accused of trying to source a gun for use in a terrorist attack – had discussed obtaining the weapon with officers posing online as supporters of Muslim extremism. The alleged communication took place some time in the last week and triggered his arrest on Sunday afternoon.

It is also understood that for the past year the boy, who is from Auburn in the city’s west, has been in an official deradicalisation program involving regular welfare checks by police and referral to counsellors and religious authorities.

The boy has denied the charges, which carry a maximum life sentence, and will make a bail application on Friday.

Anne Aly, a specialist who was consulted by police on the programs, said the boy’s case was “the perfect example” of why deradicalisation should be run by community groups at arm’s length from law enforcement.

“I do not blame the police because it actually puts them in a very precarious situation, where on one side they’re doing deradicalisation, which is social and community-based, and necessarily so; and on the other side there’s the law enforcement aspect.

“You’re putting police in a position where they have to be both, and obviously the law enforcement comes first,” she said.

In December last year a 15-year-old, also understood to be the subject of police deradicalisation efforts, was arrested and charged with terrorism offences in relation to a plot allegedly hatched more than a year before.

Aly said both cases “show the tension between a law enforcement program, where the program object is monitoring, arrest and detainment, and deradicalisation, where the primary purpose should be to disengage and reintegrate”.

“It’s a huge risk to the integrity of the programs ... like putting someone in drug rehabilitation and then putting drugs in front of them,” she said.

The head of a community intervention research and support hub at the Australian National University, Clarke Jones, agreed “the police can’t perform these dual roles”.

“They’ve either got a willingness or intent to help him, and if they feel they’re struggling to get results in terms of engagement, then they need to change tack,” he said.

“Do they want to help him, or do they want to prosecute him?”

NSW police declined to comment.

If Turnbull claws the Prime Ministership from Abbott only to lose it to Bill loving Shorten of all people I am going to laugh until I cry
This election is clearly Turdball's to lose. Shorten could only possibly win on the back of the worst government in Australia's history but that is were we find ourselves. A well dusted bag of manure could probably win the up coming poll because the incumbents have no clues what so ever. If the Manus island shut down was actually engineered to be Turdball's 'Tampa Moment' (Which is exactly what the Arsetralian is calling it) then it has been a pretty horrible failure. Nobody who isn't a completely died in the wool LNP supporter has forgotten the dire loving mess that is the NBN and getting an interest rate cut on the back of the worst economic data in nearly a decade is not a story I'd like to be selling to an electorate where everyone is either pissed off at an early poll or deeply confused by the swap from NTATA to Turdball.

Could the Manus Island be a 'Hot Potato' issue for the government!?

Only if P Dutton does the right thing and sets fire to himself. Hmmm chips!

Other things you probably don't want coming into an election are:

A budget that can not do anything to improve the stakes for your government.

A senior cabinet minister refusing to appear at a partisan political enquiry that will now crucify him in absentia.

http://www.abc.net.au/news/2016-04-27/arthur-sinodinos-says-no-to-senate-committee-appearance/7365320

quote:

Arthur Sinodinos says 'no' to appearing before Senate committee over political donations By political reporters Matthew Doran and Anna Henderson Updated about an hour ago

Federal Cabinet Secretary Arthur Sinodinos has refused to appear before a Senate committee investigating political donations, slamming it as a "political stunt".

Key points:

Senate committee sitting happening Thursday and Friday
Sinodinos says it's "inappropriate" for him or any minister to appear before committee
Inquiry due to report the day after next month's budget
Labor established the committee on the last sitting day of Parliament, focusing on the fundraising activities of the New South Wales branch of the Liberal Party.

Senator Sinodinos was the treasurer of the division at a time in which the NSW Electoral Commission has raised questions about the source of suspect donations. The electoral commission is withholding $4.4 million in public funding until the party formally discloses the details of some significant donors. In a letter obtained by the ABC, Senator Sinodinos criticises the committee's handling of the inquiry. "Given that the calling of a federal election is imminent, the public might be forgiven for concluding that this inquiry is nothing but a political stunt, not a bona fide attempt to inquire into an important questions of public policy," he wrote to the chair of the committee. "I note that Senator Nick Xenophon has described the proceedings as having the appearance of a 'witch hunt'." Senator Sinodinos suggested the committee had overstepped its powers in calling him to appear. "In any event, the 'direction' of the Senate to which your letter refers, is both unprecedented and objectionable," Senator Sinodinos wrote. "It would therefore be inappropriate for me, or any minister, to appear. While it is true that the Senate has occasionally directed the attendance of witnesses at hearings of senate committee, the witnesses in question have been departmental and other officials, not ministers."

'I am not available for either of those dates'

Senator Sinodinos pointed to an example of a Labor minister, former senator Mark Arbib, declining a request to appear before a Senate committee in 2010. "The same principle that was invoked by Senator Arbib should apply equally to me," Senator Sinodinos wrote. The former chief of staff to former prime minister John Howard also took issue with the scheduling. "No attempt was made to contact my office to determine my availability before the committee scheduled the hearing on those dates," Senator Sinodinos wrote. "I am not available on either of those dates [Thursday and Friday] — a fact with which my office could have acquainted the committee had I been afforded the courtesy of an inquiry before the dates were set." The inquiry is due to report the day after next month's budget.

Senator Sinodinos and shadow treasurer Chris Bowen had a heated argument on Radio National on Thursday morning about the Minister's refusal to appear.

"He doesn't even know what the inquiry's about," Senator Sinodinos said after Mr Bowen accused him of authorising donations from a company he was chairman of to a political party he was treasurer of. "It's got nothing to do with a company. Mate, have you actually read any of the evidence?" Mr Bowen challenged him to appear and answer all the inquiry's questions, if he had nothing to hide. Shortly after the Senate rubber stamped the committee's investigation, Opposition Senate leader Penny Wong told the ABC Labor's move was within Senate rules and defended the inquiry as necessary for "making sure our electoral system is robust".

Sin-odinos is a guilty as, well, sin. I personally don't foget where I got 4.4 million dollars from or think that sticking my fingers in my ears and going tralalala is actually going to get me off the hook. More to the point everyone in NSW is sick to the gills of this sort of political donation scandal and 'toughing it out' is just painting a huge target on your political career's back. If the LNP had the slightest clue they'd dump Sinodinos and attempt to close off the damage that this is continuing to do. Sinodinos has become the LNP's Craig Thomson. Maybe they do need Sinodinos' vote in the senate that badly. Still doesn't excuse making him Cabinet Secretary.

:munch:

Every time I get the cold sweats because it looks like something is falling into place for the evil empire they face plant hard into a cow pat at the subsequent press conference. Small wonder the polls just keep getting worse.
