Also Eureka Seven has a ton of references to 90's electronic/counter culture stuff that I was vaguely aware of at the time but didn't pay much attention to because I was too busy playing Mortal Kombat with my friends.

i tried to save a kid's balloon in spider-man 2, but i accidentally instead shot the balloon and made it pop, and made boy cry also a guy was hanging from a ledge but i couldn't figure out what button to press to save him so he fell to his death

In this particular instance I imagine it's them trying to hammer in the fact that his name is literally "free man" and is supposed to be symbolic (which would not be as obvious to the average Japanese reader with just "フリーマン").
