Title change type of growth typically only happens when a position you want is vacated, you apply, go through the normal interview process, and get offered the position. Haujobb applied for and got an opportunity in my org's Windows server team when it became vacant.

Within the campus as a whole there are a lot of IT groups - not just my org. If you feel like it's time to grow and nothing is available within the org you can check out other on-campus IT groups for openings, stay on campus, and retain benefits / years of service. Many people have done this as they grow their careers.

Sorry, I probably could have phrased my question better. What you described sounds like exactly what I'm looking for; thanks for the info!

Help me out fellow goons! I've been looking for a full-time job for a year-and-a-half now with little to no success. I'm with three different agencies in three different cities and it's still been a dry spell; hoping that posting here will help get my foot in the door somewhere

Specilize in Adobe Creative Cloud (Photoshop/Illustrator/InDesign/etc), how to design successful site maps via UX, and understand a variety of front-end coding/programming languages (HTML5/CSS3/JavaScript/PHP/SQL/more listed in full resume). Also know my way around WordPress and how to utilize both Mac/PC operating systems.

What I'm looking for: Any full-time jr to mid level job in front-end Web Design, Web Development, Graphic Design or User Experience.

What I'm NOT looking for: Anything IT related, Back-end web development, help desk work.

Where I live: Houston, TX. Also have residency in Dallas, TX and Austin, TX

Where I'm looking: Austin is the first choice, Dallas/Houston the second. Willing to relocate if a full-time contract is offered in either Dallas or Austin

When I can start: flexible

Requirements: Full Time no contract, Health Insurance, 401K match, at least 2 weeks vacation to start. Positive challenging work environment.

Can be reached via: PM

I am able to submit a resume upon request detailing my full skill set as well as a link to my professional website.

Experience: ~2.5 years mixed experience. I have experience working with hardware and software, mac and windows (XP through 10), imaging, etc. My most recent position was doing security stuff for an ISP. I'm networking+ certified. I've done both stuff in a customer-facing call center-type environment as well as more hands-on working in an MSP-type environment with businesses.

Education: Associate's in computer science (never used programming in a professional environment)

What I'm looking for: Entry to mid-level stuff in internal IT. I'd rather not do customer-facing IT stuff again but if the position is right I won't say no to it.

Where: Anywhere. I'm currently located outside of Atlantic City, NJ but I've been looking everywhere. I have a decent amount of money saved up from my last position and have no attachment to where I live so anywhere is fine (although I'd personally prefer to live in or near a city and not in the boonies but again I won't say no if the position is right)

When I can start: ASAP, given reasonable time to relocate if necessary.

Experienced in Powershell, Cisco, Microsoft. Good with the customers, better when hunting down a solution to someone's problem.

Education: Some college, never graduated. Had some certifications, they expired.

What I'm looking for: Mid-level or higher IT, technical or administrative. Something that I can have a more narrow focus than everything to everyone.

Job Seeker
Experience: 8 years in actual IT, before that tech support/customer service. Professional focus has been mostly on Windows, building large enterprise systems, MSSQL clusters and the 3-tier architecture. Solid experience with ESX and virtualization in general. The past couple years have been spent as a systems engineer doing more architecture and design work, and I'd like to continue this trend. Currently trying to branch out into cloud, I have an AWS Solutions Architect cert but no production experience with AWS. I also have an RHCSA, but likewise no production Linux experience

Education: Bachelors in Information Technology Management from WGU, AWS Certified Solutions Architect - Associate cert, RHCSA

What I'm looking for: Engineer or architect role doing primarily systems architecture and design. Willing to accept a more operationally-focused role if it gets me hands-on with AWS.

What I'm NOT looking for: Contract or contract-to-hire. Got a family, need benefits.

Where I'm looking: Austin, TX

When can I start: I'd be moving to Austin, so I'd really like to wait until the end of the school year (I have kids), but can move sooner than that for the right opportunity with relocation assistance

Contact: PM or raaghassi at gmail

I'm not in a hurry to jump ship, so if anyone has contacts with recruiters or headhunters in Austin, I'd appreciate the networking opportunity. I have until the end of the summer to make up my mind about moving, and I want to take my time and find a good opportunity.

Job Posting

Location:
Wilmington DE outskirts.
~40minutes from Philadelphia during rush hour traffic.

Who We Are:
Monstrously large and growing asset management company that thinks it's a software company as much of what we provide is essentially SaaS.

What We Need:
Hiring 2-4 people for this position:

An entry level Linux Sysadmin.
o A four-year degree specializing in Computer Science, MIS, Mathematics, Physics, or Engineering.
o Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
o Solid understanding of Linux fundamentals.
o Programming experience in at least one of the following: Java, Python or Perl or shell scripting experience.
o Basic understanding of SQL

Why Work Here?
+Decent salary, bonuses, employee stock purchase program.
+Stable and growing company.
+Small friendly US team. The entire group is ~80 but you will be part of the Delaware team which is ~10 people.
+Good growth potential. You will interact with pretty much every single other IT group in the firm and have an understanding of their work; we are big on internal mobility.
+Follow the sun on-call schedule - we won't wake you up at 3am.
+You will get to work on a wide variety of technologies.
+You can have decent work/life balance if you just focus on the operational aspect of what we do.

Why NOT Work Here?
-On-Call Schedule yes it follows the sun, but if you're on call you absolutely have to be in the office 10am – 6pm during winter DST and 11am-7pm during the summer. Somebody does have to work holidays and weekends. Note: You will not always be oncall - but first few months probably will be.
-This is an operations job supporting an overwhelmingly critical environment - doing 500 things right is overshadowed by a single mistake that causes an outage. Care and attention to detail is paramount - everyone makes mistakes but good luck explaining why you rm'd the wrong directory.
-This is mostly a support position; engineering projects come and go and won't fall into your lap on their own - but the bread and butter is tickets, phone calls and outage troubleshooting and other generally mundane sysadmin tasks.
-Much of what we support is in-house software, if you're just looking to build your resume, you won't score all that many keywords here.
-Work can totally take over your life if you get heavily into engineering or onboarding projects - and you'll need to if you want to move up.

Interested?
PM me or email agloukhoff@gmail.com and I will have HR reach out to you officially or provide even more detail.

We are expanding yet again.

JOB(S) POSTING

Location
Downtown Denver

Who We are
We are a small/mid-sized law firm that provides a wide variety of civil law services. Been around for a long time. Very stable work environment.

Job Title
Systems Administrator

What We Need
We are looking to hire a Systems Administrator to handle end-user support and IT infrastructure. It would be part of a small team so it does require a lot of end-user support but there is plenty of time for projects. This position would be ideal for someone currently working Helpdesk who wants to transition into more of a senior role or someone who wants to grow as a SysAdmin generalist type while avoiding being siloed.

Required experience:
  • Microsoft Windows environment including Active Directory, Group Policy, Print Servers, File Servers, and DHCP/DNS.
  • Microsoft Office
  • Helpdesk Ticketing (Spiceworks or equivalent)

Any of these are pluses:
  • VMware vSphere
  • Citrix XenDesktop. Non-persistent VDI via Citrix Provisioning Server. Citrix NetScaler and Citrix StoreFront.
  • Microsoft SharePoint, Exchange and SQL
  • Single Sign-On ((Active Directory Federation Services (AD FS) or equivalent)
  • Veeam Backup and Recovery
  • System Monitoring and Event Logging (Splunk , PRTG or equivalents)
  • Host-based Antivirus (BitDefender GravityZone leveraging VMware vShield or equivalent)
  • Case Management Software (ProLaw or equivalent)
  • Document Management (Worldox or equivalent)
  • iSCSI SANs (Dell Equallogic or equivalent)
  • LAN and WAN Networking (Cisco, HP, Dell SonicWall or equivalents)
  • Technical Documentation (Atlassian Confluence or equivalent)

Why Work Here?
  • You would work directly for me, small department of 2 IT guys for about 100 users. I think I am pretty decent boss. I have been managing small IT departments/teams for about 10 years now and I keep in touch with all of my old employees. I get good feedback on exit interviews, have helped develop a lot of careers, etc.
  • It is a good work environment. The people are generally kind and management tries to do the right thing.
  • We have a good budget for technology and training. We rarely have to fight for money.
  • There is a good amount of time to work on projects. While there are some days where we get slammed, there are some days where we only get a handful of tickets from users.
  • We get to work with cool stuff. If you look at the technologies mentioned in the job posting you'll see that our IT infrastructure is built significantly more "enterprise" than most small companies.
  • Due to using non-persistent VDIs, there really is not a lot of "low level" work to be done. We are not reimaging PCs or doing anything by hand.
  • Great work-life balance. The culture here is definitely more "work to live" and less "live to work."
  • Denver is an awesome, awesome city. While we are not offering relocation benefits I can be flexible regarding scheduling as far as hiring goes and am open to hiring someone from outside of the area.
Why NOT Work Here?
  • It's a law firm. Everything you have ever heard about lawyers is true. They can be difficult to deal with. That being said, our firm is the best I have seen in this regard and I have worked for/with quite a few firms.
  • It is a fairly complicated network and it can feel overwhelming until you wrap your head around it.
  • Previous IT made some fairly dumb decisions and was pretty terrible at their jobs. Documentation was non-existent. I have been here for about 2 years and we have turned a lot around in that time. Almost everything has been replaced or is in the process of being replaced and things have never been better. You could see this as a pro or a con, I guess.
  • If you are a network infrastructure type guy, there is not a lot of LAN/WAN work to do. Typical of most small companies.
  • There will definitely be some on-call responsibilities, which will depend on experience. Even when you are on call, people here rarely work outside of business hours and they are very understanding that we are only available for the gravest of emergencies.

Salary
Competitive for the location and experience level. I know this is generic bullshit, but the salary range is good and I won't play the "well, what do you make at your current job" game.

Send resume / questions to 'sa dot a dot platypus at gmail dot com'. Mention SA or Systems Admin in the subject.

Want to be part of the problem that number next to your ad blocker? OpenX is hiring positions largely across the board, however no "Office IT" positions. Software developers for Data (Yes, "Big Data", I'm sorry) are in biggest demand, but all of the positions are for immediate hire. If you are gods gift to Javascript performance, profiling, and development please speak up. This includes both managerial and individual contributor roles. One thing which sets us apart is you do not have to be forced into people management to progress your career.

This is the recruiting site which lists them all, principally we're looking in Pasadena, CA and Menlo Park, CA. Relocation is available for the correct candidates. If you want to apply I would appreciate it if you went through me so I can get the referral bonus: http://openx.com/open-positions/

I work on the SRE team and have been here for well over 6 years. It's a good place to work. The usual benefits apply. Our healthcare seems to be very top notch for very little money out of pocket each month on premiums. We haven't had a premium increase in the entire time I've worked here and the coverage has improved in that period of time.

Overall we're looking for sharp candidates who understand how their piece plays in a very large scale environment.

I will circular your resume if you put "DevOps" anywhere on it. :v:

Holy crap, someone who works for my competition! Btw, if there's any jobs on that page linked, I'm not seeing them and I tried in two separate browsers. I could be talked into leaving if I didn't enjoy my job so much (also I just changed jobs under a year ago and it looks bad switching that often).

However, if you want to work in Denver or Boulder CO, Sovrn is hiring. We're in desperate need of pipeline engineers, in particular we need a senior Data Operations (it's like DevOps but for databases!). If you know a lot of big data techs (major ones you'll work with: hadoop, kafka, cassandra, ansible, storm, zookeeper) feel free to apply or hit me up via pm or in thread. Like OpenX you'd play in a big data env and there's little barriers for what you want to do.

On top of the career benefits (seriously, you get an amazing amount of experience in a short period of time), we also have a number of other perks. Base healthcare plan is paid for by the company and you just pay the cost of additionals, for instance myself + spouse I pay ~$200/month for the top plan. Last year we change providers at no increase in monthly premiums for the same coverage. We have unlimited vacation, beer on Fridays (and not just lovely coors/miller bullshit), and every other week breakfast.

On a scale of 1 - unlimited vacation policies how bullshit is your unlimited vacation policy? We have one too, I think they're all bullshit.

So are you hiring remote people?

We have one guy who got a "talking to" from HR after 4 or 5 weeks (over the course of the year) of PTO. The biggest drawback of unlimited vacation is when you leave the company, there's nothing for them to pay out so either you're hoping you're getting a severance or you're leaving on a Friday to start a new job on a Monday.

We aren't necessarily hiring remote people unless you are an absolute rock star. And by rock star I mean we have only one guy who works remote and there's probably a handful of people in the country who know more about Cassandra than him.

While we have our "unlimited time away from work" program it's basically Comcast in vacation plan format. It's unlimited unless you want to take more time than the policy literally spells out at 2x 3 week vacations. Tech companies are awful, can't just leave the program as-is, gotta check the boxes to keep up with the joneses. Our vacation program is now something like a 2 week cap accrued 1 week a year?

Tech people are spoiled. Boulder tech people can be the worst, they like to get this heir of superiority because it's not quite as bad as silicon valley. Hell, there's worse poo poo here. So why is it a perk when it sounds like it boils down to being an unspoken race to the bottom against your colleagues for who can take the least time off? Every time I've asked someone to ballpark estimate how much time their people actually use with these policies, I receive a dodgy non answer which gives off a red flag impression. Telling me "a reasonable amount" is no better than a canned line like "we have competitive benefits."

It's not a perk in my opinion. If you read my recent posts and think I like the idea of an unlimited vacation policy you should re-read them.

I tell people in interviews I do not agree with the policy and neither should they. I then go on to tell them that on TechOps we (now) encourage 2x 3 week vacations a year, scold people who attempt to contact you on a vacation, scold you if you are contactable/online (email, IM), and suggest that even if you can't make it away somewhere that you just take the time to sit at home and play video games. Burn out is real, and people who don't take vacations are not people I want to work beside.

We are also very flexible around you having a family, though our new parent leave policy is behind the curve compared to other tech companies, which admittedly are swimming in lakes of money. Right now the official policy is whatever the state mandates. Which is improving over time as of late, they got rid of the bullshit 5-day waiting period after a 2 year waiting period among other things. (Google "california paid family leave 2016")

Oh of course I get your perspective and appreciate the way you answer during interviews since I think asking these kinds of questions is important, the candidate is interviewing the company too. I'm just sharing the frustration when an interviewer throws out the pitch all proud of unlimited pto, then stumbles when I call them out to prove it.

Another big issue with unlimited vacation is that unused PTO days are not paid off to the employee when the employee quits or is fired. That is the real reason so many companies are jumping on the bandwagon: it makes a big positive impact on company cashflow, especially if there's a lot of turnover. So not only is it a race to the bottom in terms of who can take the fewest days off, but also a way to ensure not getting a nice chunk of change when your employment is over.

It's only unspoken if you don't speak about it. You might get a talking to from HR or your manager about it, but that is just a signal to dust off the ole resume.

Yeah, but after spending years living around downtown Denver, no one sucks worse than the entitled boomer suburbanites in Lakewood and Littleton.

I would like to also point out, I don't think H110Hawk nor myself are advocating not to apply for either of our companies because unlimited PTO policies are bullshit. I certainly really like my company. I've been here less than a year and I've gotten a huge boost in learning a lot of big data technologies that I had no experience with going in. We have some really great people with a lot of diverse backgrounds. We have a really nice WFH policy and most managers are pretty lenient on working in the office.

Unlimited PTO is a sham unless you actually loving use it. Does it suck not being paid out when you leave? Sure. But if you're taking even staycations for a week every other month, you come out on top.

The point is that, in companies with unlimited PTO, there is usually cultural pressure to not take PTO days. If Employee A thinks "hmm, I have unlimited PTA, I'm going to take a week off every other month" and Employee B chooses to not take any vacation and work his rear end off instead, guess who looks better in the eyes of management. That's the unspoken part that most people (especially HR) won't even recognize.

This is why it's much better if everyone gets the exact same amount of PTO days and it's a hard number.

Let me be clear I'm advocating not applying to your shady fly by night company until you've been rejected by my shady fly by night company.

Whose side are you on?
Howdy,

I sent a msg to cforrester about working at Bigcommerce, and figured I would tell everyone else.

I work at a company here in Austin called Bigcommerce, and we are hiring for all types of developers, product designers, product managers, etc. Good news! All four locations are hiring: San Francisco, Sydney, Austin-Downtown, and Austin-West.

https://www.bigcommerce.com/careers/#jobs

About us: We are a SaaS company offering a complete webstore solution. Imagine if your dream was to sell clothes for cats ... online. We would help you fulfill that dream. Benefits are pretty solid. Company was founded in Sydney so we have inherited a lot of European-esque benefits/PTO policies, e.g. 15+ paid days off, 7 paid sick days, 2 paid volunteer days.

If anyone is interested, please check out the website, and throw me a message here in SA. I will then talk to recruiting, and begin the process.

I base all my decisions on which shady fly by night company to apply to first on who has the lower amount of posts in the various IT bitching threads. It's like a more honest glass door.
