It's pretty common for people to look at a creepy thing and go "haha creepy" and not ponder the why or how of it. Especially nerds. EDIT: For an example, one type of horror that's common in games is glitch horror. Basically the game scaring the player by making them think their game is broken. Stuff like Eternal Darkness, the Scarecrow segments in Arkham Asylum, etc. What makes it work is that instead of just being a horror that attacks the player character, it's a horror that "attacks" the player themselves. Poor imitations of it in fanart and lower-quality games put "glitchy" textures on stuff and leave it at that. For example, this fanart of a version of Markiplier called "Glitchiplier":

It's the whole Japanese otaku lifestyle. No hygiene, no social skills, and their entire life revolves around consuming media. While the same thing could be said of western otaku, it's so, so, sooo much worse over there. I read an article a while back about dating in Japan. It interviewed people who dated otaku/fujoshi, and some of the anecdotes described were loving ridiculous. The scenario in that short is not only believable, it's also pretty low on the weirdness scale.

How many times have you seen people deflect concerns about the messages and implications of their favorite media with "relax, it's just a show/game/wank doll, stop overthinking it." The message in Me!Me!Me! isn't exactly subtle, but you have to at least be willing to accept the possibility that this surreal "lol japan" anime thing is actually trying to tell you something. Add to that the fact that it's a message they don't want to hear and let status quo bias do the rest.

Plus, it's not like everyone who watches Me!Me!Me! has a deep knowledge about otakus and poo poo. They may be one of the thousands of people who're like 'Eh, I wouldn't say I'm a huge anime fan because I've only watched like three things' but decided to watch Jojo or One Punch Man because it seems to be popular lately.

You could substitute anime women for most any form of harmful escapism really, and sadly a lot of people know at least one person with self-destructive tendencies. So even if they know nothing about the state of Japanese fans they can still reason out the meaning. I think there was some "People react to MeMeMe" video on youtube somewhere that kinda had this.
