Basically, it's best to hope a hardcore eugenicist doesn't have siblings. Or worse, children.

quote:

You can look to your own life history. If you are honest with yourself, you will have to admit that most people treated you badly. At all the significant points in your past, you got screwed over by other people – and only a contemptible species would have done such a thing.

You can look to the world around you. Just examine the way that the human animals really interact. You ought to consider how humanity behaves in a public restroom if you still have any illusions that the species is worthy of respect. Lock your car doors and stare at the huddled masses in the inner city – you can’t honestly insist that there is any nobility in any of those creatures.
Whatever this is, it isn't the sound of someone in despair about the human condition. It's the sound of someone who thinks his own condition is great and wants absolute freedom from empathy with Those Other loving Humans who won't flirt back with him at the bar or pull their pants up. Most of us could "look to our own life history" and see instances of the disappointingness of things in ourselves, not just how others have treated us, but he wisely intuits that his readership isn't especially interested in that. Which is why it's not called "life is not worth living" but "life is not worth saving." His life is worth saving; his car is worth saving; only the "huddled masses in the inner city" are not.

"Hugo Award winner Chuck Tingle" sounds like a beautiful thing to me, but does not tend to the reputation of the award, no. But I'm sure Vox Day will be remembered fondly for making GBS threads up a fandom institution several times his own age. :v:

I heard someone else use this spontaneously, but it was all in the sense of "no matter what happens, Vox Day can claim a victory!" And it's like "well whatever happens, he's still Vox Day."

I don't think they won yet, just shat up the nominations. Also, apparently, people have identified the rules fix needed to prevent this garbage. They call it E Pluribus Hugo and it could be passed and in effect next year.

EPH passed last year. If ratified this year -- which is all but guaranteed -- it will go into effect with the 2017 Hugos.

Once in effect, it will mean that slating attacks will reliably get one work in each category (whichever one had the most broad appeal outside the slate voters), but it will be extremely difficult for a slate to get more than one and effectively impossible to sweep a category, unless the slated works are the ones that would have won anyways without the slate.

I know some people who write niche gay porn for amazon and if you can keep volume up and you game the sale system a bit you can reliably get at least like $25 to $50 each book (where a "book" only has to be 15 pages or so). Plus you can write about whatever bizarre weirdo fetish you have and someone will buy it, it's the deviantart of bookstores.

One of my friends just tried it for a bit when he was between jobs out of boredom, only wrote three short books in his spare time and made $300 off it despite being a nobody and not being terribly far up on any search results.

Well I think what they generally mean is that they can't express their political opinions without facing censure from society at large and risk losing their jobs or livelihood, and they want to argue for a form of free speech that means more than just freedom from government interference, which you can make a case for.

Although in practice what generally happens when some dude gets fired for calling rap "savage jungle music" or whatever is that he's instantly snatched up by one of the far-right periodicals or news sources and spends the rest of his life as a talking head for them, so really it's not so much a punishment as a change of scenery.

And also free speech as an institution would last maybe five seconds in reactopia before Prime Minister Ignatius starts burning the books and burying the scholars.

Totally, I'm just saying that "actually free speech is just protection from government interference" is not a good retort.

The real problem is that neoreactionaries and post-rationalists think that any criticism of them ever is implicitly a call to violently silence them because freaks create progs occupy amiright.

Also gamergate attempts to violently silence people don't count, because while every prog is part of an amorphous hivemind that is in lock step every moment, gamergate is a heterogenous collection of radically different individuals and no statement about any member or members of gamergate can ever reflect badly on the movement as such.
