Without changing the oil or filter for that long as well (it doesn't even burn oil fast enough to call it a rotating oil change. poo poo's blacker than pitch). Coming up on 27k miles of knocking, still gets me to work at 80+ mph every day.

Yea whoever had my Foz before me must have driven it a fuckload of a long time with it knocking. It was the loudest knock Ive ever heard from a running engine and when me and kastein took it apart the bearings had become one with the crankshaft, haha.

Mine still did whatever speed I wanted it to, I just didn't trust it to do 140 to 180 miles a day for work. Also, TR, you've been dethroned, I murdered my engine just after 9am and had a new one chosen by 1pm, pulled by 330, and in the back of my truck by 4 :v:

She's chooched alright:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=a1ev0B_uhnQ

Pics later or check my facebook. So far this mistake has cost me a day of vacation, a weekend of annoyance, and 380 dollars.

New engine has felpro permatorque mls head gaskets installed already by the last guy. And what appears to be a new spectra premium oil pan. Who knows if it knocks, I have a few bolt holes to helicoil, a flywheel/clutch to put back on, and in she goes.

Turns out my intermitten squeak/screech at idle with clutch not depressed was a lovely dry TOB. 60k miles and it is dead already, and I'm fairly nice to them. The pilot bearing also has 60k miles and is notchy as gently caress. Replacing both, otherwise it would have gone in last night.

The forester runs and drives again as of 9PM.

Has some rod knock or piston slap but the engine is quieter than my EJ22E/EJ251 hybrid was even before I hurt it. I got the one month warranty on the engine so time to romp the gently caress out of it for a few weeks to make sure it either pops or stays the same.

Just passed the point on my commute where I wrote off the old engine. :cb:

so far so good, definitely has a lot more power and torque than the old 8.5 CR hybrid 2.2L did. kinda hoping it lasts a year or two now, at that point the rest of the car will be ready for the scrapyard and I'll just part the fucker out.

Even with all the poo poo I've had to fix, my total cost of ownership right now is well under 5cpm. And it's hauled my rear end to work every day for 1.5 years, with only about 2 hours of failure that actually affected my job and wasn't 100% my fault (when the starter and some other random things failed unexpectedly.) Pretty alright with that service record.

I hate it for being a boring pile of poo poo that breaks occasionally but it gets me from A to B and passes inspection so it lives on.

Could use new struts though, it's like riding a loving bounce house right now even compared to my 150k mile, 28 year old Comanche :v:

e: oh yeah, it still needs a driver side balljoint and a passenger side steering rack boot and swaybar bushing, and a rear diff.

WEEKEND ADVENTURES, now in colour!

The donor. Looks like it didn't get the joke.

Apparently another jeep owner showed up at the junkyard while I was pulling the motor.

Halfway through, the guy with the loader came by and threw the car on a rack for me so I could do the rest in comfort. It looks like it's still mostly in there, but the only things left were the throttle cables, exhaust manifold studs, and engine mounts:

Finished up, got the engine loaded:

Hit 150k on the MJ on the way home!

These head gaskets look fine, I don't care

Looks like they are Fel-Pro PermaTorque MLS

Saturday afternoon. IT BEGINS

Sandbagger dropped by on his way home from ACEofsnett's birthday party and gave me a stack of recovery points he had lying around in exchange for an MJ truck bed toolbox. Now I need to build bumpers.

CRAPCAN FLEET, ASSEMBLEDISASSEMBLE:

Old motor's out:

Sunday afternoon. Too many loving EJs

I like to tap my bellhousing bolt holes for helicoils at high altitude, don't judge me. (this one stripped badly when pulling the old corroded stud out)

New TOB installed:

New motor going in now:

I'm 3/4 of a mile from a small municipal airport and directly underneath the southerly approach. That means the FAA cares a whole hell of a lot more about tower/structure height than they normally do.

Since there's a solid chance we'll be flying into that airport regularly if we get our pilots licenses, I tend to agree. I'd rather not run a plane into my own radio tower.

e:
https://oeaaa.faa.gov/oeaaa/external/portal.jsp

quote:

14 CFR Part 77.9 states that any person/organization who intends to sponsor any of the following construction or alterations must notify the Administrator of the FAA:

any construction or alteration exceeding 200 ft above ground level; or
any construction or alteration:
within 20,000 ft of a public use or military airport which exceeds a 100:1 surface from any point on the runway of each airport with its longest runway more than 3,200 ft;
within 10,000 ft of a public use or military airport which exceeds a 50:1 surface from any point on the runway of each airport with its longest runway no more than 3,200 ft;
within 5,000 ft of a public use heliport which exceeds a 25:1 surface; or
any highway, railroad or other traverse way whose prescribed adjusted height would exceed the above noted standards; or
when requested by the FAA; or
any construction or alteration located on a public use airport or heliport regardless of height or location.

Emphasis mine. I'm unsure what height would put me over a 50:1 surface from the southern end of the runway, but it's less than you would think. Actually, time to take a look at the sectional charts and terrain map.

My property is at about 560' above seal level and the airport is 689'. The closest point on my property to the airport is about 4300 feet from the closest point on the runway. So I have about (4300/50) + (689 - 560) = 215' maximum structure height (give or take a bit, my distance was measured on a map with a ruler and scaled appropriately and the altitude of my property is an extremely handwavey number) before I have to talk to the FAA.

Well that makes things easy, since I'd have to talk to them at 200' AGL anyways and have no intention of going over 100'.

They definitely do, I just forgot to use OLIVER. Time to recheck that.

e: 570' ASL at the highest+closest corner of my property to the airport, 689 ASL at the runway. 4208' distance. Maximum structure height is therefore 203 feet.

I think I'm just fine.

Glad it was helpful. Do you want to get close to the maximum or will you stay significantly shorter?

GIS is awesome. Unfortunately for me I graduated from my geography program right before they revamped it to be more GIS heavy. Combine that with now being 3 years out of date on my GIS knowledge and I am not competitive at all in that market.

I'll be staying significantly shorter than that. I'm pretty sure I only have about 100-120 feet of tower materials on hand and I'm not even certain I want to go that high.

With a tower like that and an antenna tuned for the ham bands you could probably pick up railroad transmissions across half the state, or at least from most of the CSX Boston line, with NECR and some P&W thrown in. The railroad bands are right next to some of the ham bands.

Portable ham radios work better than most wide band scanners if all you care about is the RR bands, since their tuners have a narrower range and are therefore more sensitive within that range. I use a ham radio as a scanner now, so if I press the wrong button on it I'm breaking the law. :cop:

I don't but I have a longblock hanging upside down on an engine stand in my yard and a 98 XJ with one installed that I can measure when I get home. My rough guess is that the engine is about 34" long, 30" tall, and 20" wide with a significant extra protrusion on the driver side near the top for the intake manifold, but this is all +/- six to ten inches.

loving hell the forums ate my post, more details later

Forester status: new engine dangling over a gaping hole in the engine compartment, was waiting on parts which I got today

Comanche status: was about to go to the yard in it today when it overheated to 280+ degrees while idling in the driveway. Shut it off, then I popped the cap to prevent hose explosions. It gave me its best Old Faithful:
