Okay somebody tell me if I'm wrong/crazy regarding the business tax cuts.

For the local small-then medium-then any businessperson, because of dividend imputation/personal services attribution/div 7A (*chortle*), the local businessperson will pay a top up rate to hit the proper (higher) marginal rate. Because the individual brackets as largely unchanged, tax paid by the local entrepreneur will be largely unchanged.*

For the multinational not in the sights of BORDER TAX FORCE, you get a 5% tax cut benefiting largely foreign investors and doing not much for Australians.

The internship bullshit's another of those great unemployment policies that gently caress the unemployed over twofold: not only is their prime jobseeking time being consumed for a pittance, but the faux-work the business is getting basically for free is taking the place of what someone would actually be paid a living wage to do normally. To add insult to injury, this role being disintegrated to be done by Newstart interns is basically required to be exactly the sort of entry-level job those jobseekers would have been applying to anyway.

This policy is as backwards and destructive as they come.

Yeah, let's reiterate: they get $1000 dollars for every intern they hire. Which they then pay at a rate where it takes them a month to start losing money, provided they weren't benefiting from having a worker they payed drat near gently caress-all.

Under this scheme, presuming you had an entry-level job to farm out like this that didn't need too much training, by far the most profitable thing to do is to never actually hire any of these people, but keep getting new interns, each one coming with a new $1k bonus.

This is another direct attack on workers rights. I can see a lot of companies that have packers or shelf stockers or warehouse workers, etc, could simply lay off their existing low skilled workforce and fill the slots with interns, essentially reducing the minimum wage to 4 bucks an hour.

You want working conditions? gently caress you. Get uppity and we'll sack the lot of you and rehire you as jobseeker-interns.
You want a raise? gently caress you. We can downsize the department and replace you withwith a rotating crop of jobseekers for a loving pittance, and get paid to do it.

Here is the more ralistic take on this story:

At the end of the eight weeks, Miles is booted out on his rear end and is send right back into the system that had been driving him to depression in the first place. He is replaced the very next Monday by Rick, a thirty-something driven to alcoholism at the loss of his factory job, who lacks both the skills and willingness to exceed at the role. Virginia's cafe profits more from doing this, and then doing it a third time when Rick stops turning up (be it because of finishing the eight weeks, leaving the role unceremoniously for any number of personal reasons, or being booted out for turning up drunk/hungover one morning because he had to drink A LOT to gather up the willingness to turn up to this work he hates for another day), this process repeating unto infinity.

Also, the internship role is far less likely to be from a small, locally-owned cafe, and more likely to be some faceless office or warehouse job, the managers of which will remember neither Miles nor Rick after they had been gone for more than three days.

A wage subsidy is only "free money" if the business was going to hire a non subsidized worker into that position regardless, which there is not necessarily any reason for them to do when you can get free labour. I don't find subsidizing wages to encourage hiring the long term unemployed objectionable, but this appears to have no connection to the unpaid internships program.

how funny that its the unions, the ACTU that are against it, but the policy experts are in favour.

the Australian Council of Social Services (ACOSS) welcomed the move.

They already outsourced all the call centres so relocating the jobs to take advantage of a temporary scheme seems unlikely. Plus they often work with soft phones, scripts, policies and internal systems that take at least a couple of weeks to get the hang of before you're flying solo.

It'll be unskilled labourers, shelf stockers, tedious fiddly office poo poo like staples and stuffing envelopes. The kind of poo poo where you point someone at a problem and give them a 2 minute debrief before closing the door behind you.

Also I like how they are hiring 1000 new people for a taskforce to look into Multinationals offshoring after firing 4400 ATO staff over the last 19 months.

I'll give some credit in that I did not expect their changes to superannuation to go as far as it did considering their base.

Limiting non-concessional contributions to a lifetime limit of $500K whilst it's currently $180K a year until you turn 75 is a pretty stark change. Especially since its effective from the budget announcement, so nothing we dodgy accountants can do about it. We told some clients to consider putting extra in before the budget, but I'm still shocked they went to this extreme.
