If you're going to listen to celebrities about global warming, you should also listen to them about the myriad dangers of vaccination and the benefits of kabbalah or whatever that poo poo is. Celebrities can be right from time to time, but under no circumstances should they be considered authorities on random poo poo, because they can also be incredibly wrong. DariusLikewise posted:What do they expect anyone to do at this point? You can't fight wildfires Yeah, but then you have fuckos like DiCaprio that are rightly made fun of for saying the dumbest poo poo imaginable, and it turns into a talking point to discredit the movement in general. DiCaprio is a knuckle-dragging retard who doesn't understand chinook winds, and climate change is a real thing. However, giving climate change deniers an easy route to attack you, when you claim to be a representative of the movement in general, is unquestionably harmful and bad. EDIT: And that's before you even get into the celebrities who are supporting complete nonsense without any basis in fact at all. If you're happy to see people follow Leo on climate change, just realize that you're implicitly supporting people following Jenny McCarthy on anti-vaccination and that sort of poo poo. Deadfall is so bad in a lot of areas that if you let a lot of these areas just burn naturally it'd destroy entire towns, kinda like what's happening now. It's too big to fail. EDIT: if anyone wants to see what they're up against (with a 24h delay) you can download fire data straight from NASA. https://earthdata.nasa.gov/earth-observation-data/near-real-time/firms/active-fire-data Fire's on both sides of the river as of when the last VIIRS data was collected so ya it's conceivable that literally the entire town will be gone by morning. If Brian Jean is correct and the fire is already in downtown Fort McMurray (and the hospital is more or less dead center in the middle of downtown) then there's nothing they can do to stop the real damage from happening. North of the river you have a sea of houses, the lower townsite is where all the essential services are. The city went on a big kick a couple years back of centralizing all government services downtown.

Metaposting, I know, but this is a disgrace. Posting on this forum won't make the fires burn any less hot. Hell, even if the people of Ft. McMurray had woken up one day and decided to start a people's revolution to overthrow the shackles of big oil and have a giant solar farm love-in, their town would still be burning down because climate change is an aggregate sort of thing. I suppose it's not so much glee as it is a kind of resignation that this type of thing was predicted to be inevitable and unstoppable long ago. If not Fort Mac, then High River, or Kelowna, or Prince George. This won't be the last human settlement that will face an increased threat from wildfires due to climate change. But, as one of the first to experience the type of devastation we can expect to occur with increasing frequency during the 21st century, there is a certain bit of morbid irony about it.
