Microsoft is notorious for making the worst possible ui decisions and has a bad case of "if it aint broke, we are going to make drat sure to break it in the next major version" when it comes to interface design. Their latest bright idea was to remove the start menu from 8. Literally the centerpiece of the Windows OS since 95 and one of their best most intuitive ui fratures ever. Adored by all users. So let's take it out!!!! but keep ribbon! That poo poo is gold At least start is back in 10 but not without leaving tons of overly bloated with dumb poo poo tacked on to the right expanse.

DrBouvenstein posted:God, I hate regular Server 2012. 2012 R2 is fine, it's basically the server version of upgrading to 8.1. You can boot/log in straight to the Desktop, and you get the Start Menu back. The 2012 R2 (and 8.1) start menu is actually really useful, right-clicking gives you a ton of easy options like restart/shutdown/logout, Control Panel, Task Manager, Command Prompt, etc... We have to keep servers at all versions to ensure our software works in all server versions (at least one of each supported ver) so upgrading is not an option.

Sten Freak posted:Also, and this is another work thing, if you are remoted into one of these servers and need the start button that's not a start button you have to hover into the last 3 or so pixels into the bottom left hand corner to get the blue-box start thingy. And if you barely miss too far to the left and that server window was on your right monitor well poo poo now you just clicked into your center's monitor's (primary desktop) bottom right hand corner which is the show desktop for all monitors button so everything gets minimized. Convoluted I know but someone out there has probably also done this 50 times because we cannot have a start button in server 2012. This is absolutely terrible and made me glad we were able to upgrade to R2, because ugh. "How do you get to the start button on the new 2012 servers?" "Hover your cursor in the all the way bottom left until a thing pops up" "It's not working" "Keep trying, jiggle the mouse around until it does" "Can you please reinstall 2008 R2?"

When I was in elementary school and high school, the schools used this Windows 95 shell replacement called IBM SchoolVista. The login screen looked like the outside of a school, and the "desktop" looked like a classroom. The programs list was a bookshelf. It was designed to ensure that students could only use pre-approved programs. There were also some other features that teachers never used. This was in the middle of the "computer interfaces that look like real life" kick that was mercifully short-lived when people realized it was rear end. After a little bit of tinkering we found out that you could just run any program you wanted with any Open dialogue by entering *.exe to change the extension it was browsing for to executables, and then you could browse anywhere and right click->run or whatever. Aside from being able to play games (we played some IPX LAN games of Doom for instance) it was nice being able to use a different web browser. SchoolVista was deployed with Netscape 4 which was crappy and outdated at the time and if you went anywhere cool you'd get a ton of Javascript errors. This was the one time in history where Internet Explorer was way better than any of its competition

It's not great, but it's a proper keyboard with key switches and separate hard plastic keys, large enough to feel like the bad end of ultrabook keyboards instead of the good end of phone toys. If you were stupid enough to not buy one, then yeah onscreen keyboard. The MS one is a reasonable implementation, but that's not saying much. Just read that that the ILOVEYOU worm turned 16 today. It's funny how these things mutated from the occasional joke virus with sometimes destructive properties for the hell of it to this high-speed blur of highly sophisticated software exploits and ransomware backed by some random mobsters. We're also gonna see a lot more of that because devices getting too "smart" for their own good (IMO). It's amazingly unfun.
