It would be interesting to know what percentage of the people who lost their homes opted for the bare minimum insurance plan and are now going to get a cheque that still doesn't cover the remaining amounts on their mortgages.

That would be interesting, but in those cases I bet you'll almost certainly see the government step in as has happened in pretty much every other disaster in recent memory.

Who would the insurance pay out to, the bank or the homeowner? If it's the latter they could just flip the bird to the bank and deliberately default on the mortgage, couldn't they?

On my drive home I listened to live news reports and thought about things like insurance companies declaring bankruptcy or the possibility of out-of-work oil workers cutting home insurance before selling their trucks Anyway, the dream of me getting a boring job out West and posting during a night-shift while paying down my student loan just took a step towards becoming reality, I think! Teachers today were talking about how this could be a good thing for our numbers, since some families might just decided to take the insurance cheque and return to the Maritimes.

In most of Canada mortgages are full recourse; no handing the bank the keys and giving them the finger. Except for Alberta. So ya expect a lot of people walking away from their mortgages.

Lmao oh Canada... On CBC radio they just announced a number for parents to call if they're having problems with their autistic children during the crisis. They immediately followed up with a number for people to contact if they need emergency gluten-free food. I love this country
