Obviously Internet bullying is a thing with teenagers right now, but...well, I'm the same age as Milo Yiannopoulos, and I remember growing up in the 90s when pearl-clutching parents were blaming social problems on video games and heavy metal and black clothes. At that time, anything that was provocative, edgy, or concerned with disturbing themes gained an instant veneer of intellectual respectability to me and a lot of my friends. As an adult I recognize that mindset as sophomoric, and I immediately recognize people like Yiannopoulos as mentally arrested at the age of about 15. But I wonder how many 15-year-olds today have that same ingrained attitude as many of my generation. Wasn't there that one terrorist that had the hosed up license or something that said F instead of M that the right was conspiracy-theorizing was actually a radical transperson?

Dumb contrarianism springs eternal among american teenagers and some proportion of american teenagers will become mentally arrested at 15. You're right that the contrarianism of 90s teens was fixated on think-of-the-children moral crusades and post-civil rights "political correctness." What are the big concerns about kids today? Some of the enthusiasm for multiplying sexual identities and wide-ranging accusations of cultural appropriation or insensitivity might be a partial response to the post-Clinton neocon hell we're kind of escaping now.

So we're all aware that Vox Day and company have managed to gently caress the Hugo nominations again this year. There was no pretense at anything but trolling on their ballot choices this time, as exemplified by the presence of Amazon Porn Machine Chuck Tingle's "Space Raptor Butt Invasion" in the list for Best Short Story.
