loving brilliant! Not only do they originally overprice the handsets that even reluctant fans (are there any other kind still behind WPhone?) don't bite, and where they should have been half the price to even begin to get market penetration, they now try and offload stock by giving you two phones (why?!) for the same high price!

"Hay guys, first we make it expensive to make sure we get stock lying around, then we do our best to not get rid of any of it in a last-ditch ineffective and expensive effort!"

"But shouldn't we just start cheap - we may even sell some and at least we won't totally lose any remaining goodwill and maybe even win over a few new customers?"

"gently caress off Dave. People like the price, they just want more phone! We'll make them pay half price each for two phones in a year!"

Hell, I'd buy either one right now for $250 but gently caress off two phones for $650, AND I'M A PUNTER WHO GIVES A poo poo.

So how the hell can I get the Messaging to stop popping up all of the time when someone texts me? I don't mind it and I really like the feature since I don't always have to check my phone but the god drat pop-up goes on top of videos and games and that gets annoying. It'd be nice if I could just listen for my phone, then check the messaging app if I want to text back without the message always popping up on my computer.

I'm pretty sure this was in 8.1, but for sure in 10 you can go to notifications+actions, select messaging, and then turn off show notification banners while leaving the sound and vibration settings alone (you can also separately turn them off on just the lock screen).

I've actually switched to the official twitter app now that my premium lapsed. It isn't horrible.

Also, should this thread become the Windows 10 device thread since it's one OS now? I like my Surface a lot more than I like my 640xl. The only thing missing is shape writing, and since they destroyed the awesome WP8.1 version I don't care too much.

While they're technically "one OS", the Surface runs desktop Windows, which is still a good bit different than mobile Windows. Plus the Surface is really just a touchscreen laptop, as far as hardware goes.

Can someone explain windows 10? I thought mobile was the same as desktop, but shackled so to speak. Continuum basically removed the shackles but you need a powerful phone to do it because you're getting full desktop windows. Is that wrong?

As I understand it, continuum basically gets you Windows RT. It's "full desktop Windows" in its UI and presentation, but you're still limited to Windows Store apps that would run on your phone (meaning no x86/x64 programs)

1. Continuum doesn't let you window things just snap so it's not really that useful.
2. As stated it's an ARM chip so no Steam, or any program not in the Windows store (and even then many of them won't work either). MS said it's got a web browser (crippled) and office (probably partially crippled) so it has EVERYTHING anyone would ever need and they heard crickets not clapping.

An x86 WP would be amazing because it would be a phone/desktop when hooked up, right now we have decent ARM phones that kinda project to a screen sorta but have very limited use. Since WP is around 1% of the market and even MS doesn't seem to care anymore it's hard to see a future.

But again an x86 WP would be AMAZING, but that also presupposes MS can get their act together on things like background audio, bluetooth and intel can produce an x86 chip with LTE that's battery efficient.

The other major aspect is Jobs prediction has come true that many people simply don't care to have a full PC and are happy with iPads, browsers, phones, game consoles, and internet TVs. At which point the only people who would really care about an x86 WP would be people who develop on MS platforms. Granted that's all they really ever had, but they might get some new diehards/business wins.

I bet businesses would love to just give out a phone and setup workstations. That was supposed to be possible with continuum but between only 2 windows, missing things like custom VPN clients, and x86 legacy line of business applications it didn't work. If you could actually have a full (granted weak) x86 + windows 10 from a phone I think you could convince a lot businesses to switch over. But of course that presupposes they haven't switched to the cloud and already no longer care.

I was kidding, mostly. I just see that x86 becomes ever more complicated with tacked on features, and isn't really that efficient in a mobile form factor. I own an Atom based Windows tablet, and it chugs along now that I've got Windows 10 on it. Plus I don't expect its 3000mAh battery to last more than an hour or two under regular use, tops. And you want to cram those kinds of chips into a phone? Perhaps you'd also like to be able to run desktop software on that thing?

Disregard this, I suck.

Yeah, programs designed for a desktop really don't work well on Atoms/phones in general in my experience, so I really don't see the fuss over x86 on phones. There's a reason ARM is so widespread already.

It's the only thing that WP could have over Android. Let me use my phone to play Cave Story/Spelunky please. I can do so much more with x86 machines than ARM. I know I'd only be able to do it when connected to a display, but comeon DO IT.

Well WP also has being just a mess rather than a virus-ridden mess over Android. Furthermore, I seriously doubt the performance out of a phone would be all that great, plus it could make it even harder to get the apps over.

Yes that's the point. As a phone it would still be the same WP as always but in continuum it would be a full x86 device with access to 30+ years worth of quality software. That would make it a complete desktop replacement.

But it doesn't matter it looks like it can't happen to at least 5G but if WP is still around by then (or reintroduced) that would be an exciting time.

People actually want desktop software from decades ago on their phones? With the janky use of touch targets on tiny controls? I can barely play Cave Story with a gamepad, but with a virtual/touch gamepad, forget about it.

Games are still not ported to other platforms because developers only ever know how to write Windows games, which is sad.

Mecca-Benghazi

I think they're saying store the game or iTunes or f.lux or whatever until it's hooked up to the monitor, keyboard, etc. when you can actually use it. That way it'd be a phone and probably a good enough desktop replacement for most people. I could see myself buying a monitor and peripherals and actually getting a desktop that way, since I don't have one now, although I don't think it'd ever replace my Surface.

Yes. x86 on Continuum makes it worthwhile, right now it's just a toy that's not particularly useful. x86 Continuum would make the padphone concept/all-in-one/stream to TV one device convergence make sense. Most people don't need all that powerful a computer and selling an x86 device with a dock that people could use with their old M/K/Monitor could be a compelling sale. Continuum-ARM has too many compromises to be a desktop replacement outside of niche scenarios that would be better served by many other products.

With that description it seems possible you'd enjoy the 950, but I'd still advice you hold off, it remains rough, and e.g. the Spotify app is clunkier than the iOS version. Plus the 950 remains rather poor value for money, so at least seeing if a more charming handset is coming is advisable.

As one of the billion people who's skipping this generation of WP I'm actually really impressed with the Google Maps app's level of polish. Here Drive could get you places just fine, but Google Maps is just a better app experience. I switched back from Android since Android combined not being very pleasant with simple things randomly failing v:shobon:v

I really think the iPhone remains the straightforward option if one values ones time and convenience over the geekier draws of either the control of Android or the esoteric choice of WP.
