Yeah I never implied anything like that, I replied to somebody who thought insulting Bill was bad strategy. I pointed out that it's not strategy, it's a talking point. It doesn't impact votes, it adds to the republican discourse. I never claimed it would make people vote for Trump, that would be a ridiculous thing to say.

His only problem in West Virginia was that his campaign team submitted a slate of delegate candidates that meant he couldn't take all the delegates even though he was going to win handily. This has become irrelevant with everyone else dropped out of the race.

Well, WV is a conservative, coal-driven, and generally poor state, so I'm not surprised they'd gravitate towards Trump.

Beyond that, what sort of poll was it? Were they relying on landlines? Because if so, you'd have an older audience (possibly also unemployed so they'd be more likely to answer the phone) so that could also explain it.

In 2012 Romney won WV by almost 30 points. It'll tighten a bit as we get closer to election day but no one should ever expect a Democrat to win West Virginia. Trump will easily take it by double digits.

WV is full of people who are white, poor, uneducated, highly religious, are big into "Southern pride" despite the state's history of leaving the Confederacy, base their local identity around the coal industry, and cling hard to their guns. (Basically WV is terrible.)

Since it's a district wide policy, my wife wrote a polite email to the board of education asking for an explanation.

They didn't bother responding, they forwarded it to our principal with a curt "Take care of this". Our principal wrote a butt-hurt "You should have contacted me with any concerns" reply. At no point did anyone address any of the questions asked. From other channels we've heard that someone (no names were given) is literally scared of their own shadow, so these idiotic policies are to be seen as "doing something".

Some events aren't actually a one-parent rule, they just become so due to the hard-line "no siblings" policy. If you aren't Chinese with a single kid, someone has to stay with the other kids and someone gets to go. That's actually even worse for families because now theres "It's your fault Dad couldn't come to my concert!" poo poo as well. Not to mention daytime events when mom has an infant - I have to take off work to take care of an infant barely able to crawl so Mom can attend. You know the rash of school murders caused by pre-toddlers coming to luncheons, right? Terrible things. Add to the more common policies against non-store foods and suddenly once-popular events like the thanksgiving lunch are either canceled or full of kids crying because their parents didn't show up.

It all happened this last year, and I hope that in November I can get enough parents mad enough to kick out the board and return to the previous (sane) policies.

Again - it's a single district issue, I posted about general problems with state-run education. I keep writing :words: about it because it pisses me off so much. It's not even golden remembrance of my own school years, it's having an attention-span longer than a goldfish and remembering last loving year.

More on-topic, all politics are truly local, and this kind of poo poo can have long-lasting impact. You make kids hate school and they do badly and oh well there goes most of their lifetime earning potential. It's also a great counter point to rjadasdbnmap's poo poo about educating out of bigotry - These are the idiots running education into the ground. We can talk about banning homeschool and religious reinforcement "schools" a long time after school board powers are reduced to deciding the theme for prom and the printer for the yearbook.

Edit: forgot to address this

I wish. It's depressing graduating in front of a mostly empty room. It's strictly some imaginary "liability" issue that apparently only our district has, and hopefully will no longer have next school year. Sucks for everyone graduating this year though.

So bring your infant, have someone kick you out on camera, and use the footage to run a campaign to replace your local electeds. This is America: If you don't like a policy, use the system to change that policy.

Additionally, in the segment of people that could still be swayed to one side or the other you have to wonder how effective it can be to attack Bill, the former president who presided over an extremely good 8 years for the US including a surplus. Trump attacking Hilary via Bill risks it making people think "wait, if I elect her we get him back in the White House? Ok great!"

Yes, he's a sexual predator and all but the GOP going after him because of Monica didn't hurt him and it certainly doesn't help that most people leading that charge were either cheating on their spouses as well or a serial child rapist.

West Virginia was one of 6 states that went for Carter in 1980 (!) and one of 10 that went for Dukakis. Robert Byrd was the longest serving senator in history. It's a pretty complicated state politically but it used to function essentially as a political machine for the democrats for over 60 years.

I feel like the megachurch/southern-lifestyle stuff is newer to the state than the shift to the GOP, a symptom rather than a cause. I'd say the death of earmarks, the death of organized labor, and the rise of national wedge issues did more to drive the state into the arms of the GOP than an inherent bias towards amorphous rural widdershins.

EDIT:

I will grant however that this guy:

winning the 2012 democratic primary in the state was simply racism.

Trump advises them...he is a thought leader in business after all...not the other way around.

Trump gets advise from the smartest business leaders and experts. He's been hiring experts his entire life, why would he hire bad ones now?
