I don't mean to defend the gigantic touch screen but how often are you guys loving with your climate control? I set mine to Auto and the temp I want and then drive. Really music controls are the most important thing.

That said I have no idea how the Tesla fits with Ontario's anti-texting laws. As far as I can tell you can be pulled over and fined for using your iPhone while driving, but using the gigantic tablet attached to the dash of your tesla is okay.

My daily commute involves alternating road & highway segments and if at all possible I like to drive with a window down. On really hot or really cold days I'll poke at my climate control quite a bit. I also change stuff on the radio once in a while. I can do all of this without taking my eyes off the road with physical controls, with a big rear end touch screen I don't see how I could.

Where it goes completely sideways is with the Model 3, at least the Model S has the display embedded in the center console, the 3 is basically a VESA mounted display potentially in the blowout path of the passenger air bag and they moved the instrument cluster on the display:

Mine isn't automatic, just how fast the fan is blowing and how warm/cold that air is. I usually put it on full cold/hot until it reaches a comfortable temp. In the winter, I turn the heat down at that point. In the summer, I usually go between full on and full off.

I mess with mine a lot more when it's humid out and the windows are fogging. Then, it's a balancing act between keeping the temperature comfortable and the windows defogged, though that's usually just picking a temp and turning the defrost on and off as needed.

All that I can do without taking my eyes off the road and can even reach the controls with my palm on my shifter.

Mother of god. I can see what they're trying to do but as long as the thing has a steering wheel and pedals, even if they're just there for backup, that is a bloody terrible idea. I wonder if in a couple of years astronauts will be eyerolling at dumb techy poo poo in the space capsule?

Yeah, and it can depend on how much sunlight is coming into the car.

I'll crank it down when driving in direct sunlight. But it'll feel too cold when I'm not getting that blast of heat from the windshield anymore. Been thinking about getting one of those windshield treatments that reduces the heat absorbtion for just that reason. Can't ever have enough help with that sort of thing in TX.

Highway speeds: windows up, AC on
City speeds: windows down, AC off

I prefer driving with the windows down so like I said in my daily commute I alternate every 5-10 minutes since I have a weird route.

xzzy
Mar 5, 2009

Windows down until it hits about 75, then gently caress it, A/C time.

I don't strictly need it on the highway, car has a quirk of aerodynamics where I can open the front passenger window about an inch and the rear passenger about four inches and I get an epic draft right across my forehead.

The LEDs in the newer ones have a lot of computer controls, and a control unit that doesn't come out in 3 seconds with a screwdriver like the light itself does. without some fancy soldering they're paperweights.

The taoureg and panamera also seem to suffer from the same issue.

Fair point, though I was replying to a specific question, not a general comment about design.

I still think it is easier to pick an album or artist on a big, responsive touch screen that provides a lot of information than it would be using physical controls. It is faster to get to what you want, not requiring you to manually shift through all the options. In either case, you'd have to look at the screen to see what you are choosing, and I say doing it more quickly is better. (This is from my experience using the original stereo with solely physical controls and using the stereo from the next generation of my car with a touchscreen.) It's also something that isn't (or shouldn't) be done often and can be put off until you are stopped and it is safe to do so.

Physical controls for more important and frequently used controls that don't require as much attention are important. Changing the volume, muting the radio, and changing tracks are things that should be done by touch without looking away.

I just never bought that story. There's a lot of ifs and buts and maybes that just don't add up. Assuming you're too poor a farmer to just go to the store and buy some grow lights, and criminal enough that you don't mind doing some robbing, why not just steal actual grow lights? Or, given that stealing these Porsche xenons and fencing them would be so lucrative, do that and with the money you get, buy your grow lights like everyone else? And that's assuming you're even stealing them to grow weed in the first place, and not stealing them so that you can fence them and buy drugs or whatever else with the proceeds. And in Amsterdam of all places! Really gonna get a leg up on the competition saving all that money in grow lamps. Honestly how much margin are you going to claw back using stolen car lights as grow lamps vs just selling the things on eBay?
