Greetings thread,
I've been poking around the thread and would appreciate any input y'all can provide about going to Tokyo in October. I"m staying down by the Tokyo Sea-fort (Marriott) for 4 days in country. I'm there for some work, but I'll have the vast majority of my time free for touristy stuff.

What I'm specifically looking for is info on good food spots, museums/day treks, and general solo travel information. I'll be travelling on a consultant budget so while I'm looking to waste money, I'm down for treating myself to an indulgence or two as long as it's worth it. Personally, I"m hugely into history and art, mostly from the 16th-19th century in the area, so any recommendations along those lines would be awesome. Also it'll be my granddad's 90th when I get back, so suggestions on small but cool gifts would be appreciated!

I do a lot of business in Europe, but I've never been to Japan/Asia, and I know it's a hugely overwhelming experience for some people. Since I'm going in blind all advice is welcome, like I said. Hell, I like meeting goons from different places so I wouldn't mind going out for a drink if the opportunity comes up.

edit: Looks like the area is called Shinagawa

I was just in Tokyo last week as a tourist. Ueno park is like 3 stops away from Shinagawa and is basically the national mall: a park surrounded by museums. I didn't have time to check any of them out, but they looked legit.

You can't go wrong with a daytrip to Nikko.

Mid October I'd also absolutely recommend Nikko. I'd also recommend making it not a day trip and spending a night there. It's during peak autumn color season.

Hey all, really appreciating the input!
Without sounding like a turbo-nerd- I picked up tickets to see the Die Walkure opera (The Wagner one) at the New Tokyo Theatre. Any other venues worth checking out?

If you're into One Piece at all the One Piece kabuki was pretty drat entertaining. I'm not sure if it'll still be showing in october, but it's worth looking out for.

edit: looks like they just did their last show, but there's a movie based on the play coming out this fall.

Apparently you'll be able to purchase the JR Rail Passes inside Japan soon. Or possibly even now?

http://www.halaltimes.com/japan-highlight-cultural-assets-boost-tourism/ 'Another plan is to upgrade existing travel services such as the system of issuing the “Japan Rail Pass.” The cost-effective rail ticket, which offers unlimited use of almost all Japan Railway trains, can only be purchased abroad, but from fiscal 2016 starting in April, these passes would be available in Japan on a trial basis.'

Anyone know more?

edit: went to Narita today to meet my friends, and no, they're not selling them. At least not yet.

Why are Japanese people clumping the Nordic countries into one?

This happens to me constantly: I tell them I'm from Finland, get all the pleasantries and "ooh, I know this and that..". Then 2 minutes later I get asked, "So, I hear that in Norway/Sweden/Denmark..".

Thinking Finland is part of Scandinavia is a very common mistake and not everyone knows their geography. And the farther the place is the, less people know about the nuances of the region. Euros just tend to know their stuff because of colonization and rich history of the old world.

I don't expect people to know all of the differences between different European countries because they have no reason to know about them, but it does really bug me when somebody just bluntly assumes that I'm American.

I'm an American and I only know that Finland isn't Scandinavian because my great grandparents immigrated from there. No one gives a poo poo about your suicidal snowbound semi-socialist state or your Nordic neighbors.

As an aside, former sumo wrestler Baruto could pass for one of my cousins. Topical because he's Estonian.

Another nice night in Tokyo. Staying at a friends place in iidabashi/kagurazaka at the moment. Shame about the weather. Spending a lot of money on food too, but it's so nice to eat different new stuff every night. 2 more days and then we're going to gunma to meet old friends of my girlfriend.

I drink seltzer as my go to drink outside of water.

炭酸水 is seltzer. Cider in Japan is more like a sprite. Basically if it is sweet it a cider, if it is not sweet then it is just soda water.

Is there a difference between a JR pass and a Suica pass? My parents are coming to visit in October for about three and a half weeks and they're thinking of going all around the Kanto plain (dragging me along, naturally) in that time. Does the JR pass only work on JR main lines or would they work on local trains too?

Goons, help, I am denshadumb.

With the JR pass you pay a certain amount and can make unlimited trips on JR lines within the valid period.
Suica is a card that you put credit on, swipe at your departure and it will deduct the cost of the trip when you swipe it at the destination.

It really depends on how often you will travel, how far and if you want to take the shinkansen or don't mind slow local trains to save money.
Even if you get the JR pass the Suica might still be convenient for non-JR lines, subway and you can even use it as a payment method at stores.

You definitely want an IC card like Suica or Pasmo. It's incredibly convenient and it works on the subway and busses etc

JR Pass for long distance, special deal for tourists only. Suica for urban commuting.

You need to really make some long/a lot of trips on the shinkansen to make the JR Pass worthwhile. You can check train ticket prices at hyperdia.

There are also cheaper regional JR passes if your parents aren't leaving the Kanto area.

Holy poo poo, thanks! These are all super helpful replies, and I think I've just decided on recommending the Suica pass instead. A friend of mine was saying that his Suica was locked and that he now has 8500 to spend exclusively on vending machines. How does that happen?

You can use an IC card at the convenience stores...? The JR Pass pays for itself if you do a round trip on the Shinkansen once. If you use it more than that, congrats, you're coming out ahead. However, if you're just going to take regional rapid service trains and browse around a single urban center, you're better off not getting it.

By locked do you mean the train station gates wont take it any more? He probably just hosed up something at some point. Usually that happens when the gates are lagging to do heavy traffic and you exit without the gates actually reading the card. Any ticket booth person can fix it. They will probably just ask where you exited.

Yeah Kyoto is pretty much perfect for bikes.

I didn't have as good a time when exploring eastern Kyoto on bike, sadly. Seems like the roads were worse for cycling. The rain might have contributed though, but will have to do this again w/o bike before I go home. I basically skipped the nice preserved (?) streets and went back to the hotel when the rain started to come down a bit heavier.

At least I got an amazing curry from some little no-name cafe close to Ginkakuji.

So I'm in Kyoto right now, and I thought I would check out some of the goon recommendations for food around here (the specific places I had written down were Togaden, Takotora, Ichijoji, and Daigin). My question is: how do I actually find these places? I tried typing both the romanji and the hiragana into Google Maps and Yelp, but nothing came up for any of them except Takotora.
