Android 6 is a great operation system. I used Windows Phone 7.5, 8 and 8.1, eventually switching to back to Android in mid 2014 when it was on version 4.4.

I honestly couldn't go back to Windows Phone. I haven't used Windows 10 Mobile but Android these days is fast, fluid and stable on decent devices, though of course manufacturers can, and do, muck it up.

I used a 1st generation Moto G, then a Sony Xperia Z3 Compact, and am now on a Galaxy S7. They have all been terrific phones and offer so much more functionality than Windows on phones.

When you think about it, all we've really learnt is that phone makers are absolutely fleecing us for devices that are actually rubbish in lots of ways.

Everyone, go buy a landline.

(In all seriousness, used WM10 on a 950 the other day and the OS itself is lovely, might look into getting one more towards the end of this year. Hopefully M$ will come to their senses and slash the prices by then.)

I've used all platforms pretty extensively. All platforms randomly fail doing simple thing, iOS the least, Android the second least and WP7/8/10/Win8/Win10 the most in comparison. Of course everyone's mileage will vary. If you get an under powered machine they will fail more, if you get a beat up machine they will fail more.

If you want the most stable system a very recent phone with iOS taken care of well (physically) is your best choice. A recent galaxy/Android will also treat you well and give you more options to customize (without the need to root/jailbreak).

Swappa.com / Slickdeals are great places for a good deal on devices. If you really want value recent LG's are usually 50%+ off within months of release and solid phones.

I got a very good condition 1520 via local classifieds yesterday for...$30. Dude selling it didn't know anything about Win Phone. He just said he wanted it gone. Works great, IMEI clear but the battery. It's hosed. It goes from 100 to 80% in about 20 mins. Then instantly after that the low battery warning comes on and it shuts down.

Battery is clearly toast. Looking at ~$20 replacement and some disassembly. So I guess I'm kind of back to watch the WP trainwreck.

I haven't found that to be true. WP 7-8.1 were rock solid and I had an iPhone 6 that was kind of a turd and needed to be power cycled about every other day. W10 is worse, and I haven't used android since the Samsung Focus came out. But it wasn't good.

The Note 6 leaks sound promising and the S7 looks amazing, and if W10 isn't stable by October when I have my upgrade I don't think I'll wait for a surface phone.

Jealous of this, the Samsung keyboard is bad. In particular it does this thing where it autocorrects a word it doesn't recognize into two words, then if you pick the option to un-autocorrect the word it only deletes the second of the two words it added (eg "autocorrect" becomes "auto correct" becomes "auto autocorrect")

I remember shopping around keyboards when I first got the phone and not being incredibly impressed with any of the alternative ones but maybe it's time I reassess

I'm an iphone 6s user. Would I be disappointed going to a 950? The only apps I use really are the text / email / awful app / spotify. I do use Google services heavily, but I suppose I could live without google maps as long as the alternative is nearly comparable. I do think the win10 winphone aesthetic is the best in the mobile market, and iOS is really boring me...

I've got all three OSes (a 5S, a Nexus, and a Lumia 930) and use the same limited set of apps you do. I think you'd be okay with a WP. Spotify isn't quite as smooth on WP, but it's perfectly functional. It has a slight irritation, which seems to be common to Windows apps, in that it tries to connect via Wifi or data before playing even downloaded music, which delays launch by like a second or two (Deezer does the same thing). (e; oh, and it's not very good at downloading missing tunes when it syncs playlists over Wifi, unless you make it do so. It ends up pulling them down when you try to play them for the first time while you're out and about instead. Podcast apps are the same, but so long as you've got a decent data package it isn't too much of an issue. Annoying though!) Other than that, it's fine. HERE maps is way better than Google maps for driving (though I believe for US users its now been rolled into some other Windows maps package; I'm not sure how that is.) Can't comment on the 950 as I've never even seen one, but the 930 I've got is a really nice phone and a lot cheaper. If you're moving from iOS you'll love its battery life and camera. I've had it for over a year and a half and I feel no urge to upgrade unless a significantly decent Surface phone gets announced.

That's mostly where I'm at, but the stability issues are starting to become a problem. Want to take a picture of the cool thing that may never happen again? Top bad, the camera app is going to keep crashing until you power cycle your phone. Want to listen to your music? That's rich. Thanks for the $10 a month, here's an error message that another app is controlling your phone's sound but there are no open apps and a power cycle won't fix this. Seriously, get it together, WM10.

Factor, Harmony music is pretending I didn't buy all of the music, and a bunch of songs aren't able to play. How do I fix this?

I've been hearing great things with the Google Keyboard of late.

With Swiftkey, if it autocorrects something, you can hit the backspace button and it will give you the original autocorrect options. So, with "autocorrect", it'll change it to "auto correct", you hit backspace, and you're given the choice to select "autocorrect" to replace it.

There was a problem a few months back on one of the preview builds, where durable IAP was not restored. I didn't do anything to fix it, it eventually fixed itself. One thing you could try is to uninstall the app & re-download it and see if IAP restores correctly.

I used my wife Iphone for a bit during a recent carride and once again it baffles me why Microsoft is incapable of bringing Cortana (or even basic voice stuff) in my native language. I think they've had German in Beta for a year now. It was very convenient to just yell at her phone to go to some place in the middle of nowhere and get it. Same with calling people, at least her phone knows how to pronounce my friends names at the first try.
I never knew that I missed such accuracy until now.

Wonderful.

Windows Phone 8.1 doesn't let me install an app, failing due to ~mysterious reasons~ (800700578).

Now, the error code isn't present when the language's set to Finnish, and try as I might, I couldn't find a way to fix it in a reasonable time (a hard reset isn't reasonable).

I try to grab the xap from Windows Store on my PC, but they removed that functionality. If I try anyway, it'll instead... launch the windows 10 store app, giving me the right app for the wrong account, wrong platform and wrong device. It'd be happy to install it though!

Soft reset meanwhile brings up roughly 100 backup error messages that just weren't there before.

This is a mess and I'm genuinely thinking a Moto E is an easier solution.

Whenever I've had install errors it seems to be something to do with the memory card - either WP doesn't allow, for some unknown reason, or the card has been corrupted by the very same WP.

Most of the problems with this have been after to WP10 fast stream install, I don't recall whether 8.1 had the same problems though I don't think so. Make of this what you will.

Windows Phone seems to be a series of ::mysterious reasons:: one after another.

Yeah I absolutely remember having problems with the W10 insider builds on a phone using a memory card

(mostly because the install process itself wasn't allowed to use the memory card so I had to move everything on my phone over to it which is not a process that works very well in and of itself)

Takes, like, ten seconds to backspace. Anyone else noticed this? Persists after rebooting etc. but it does seem to be specific to Gmail. Just my phone, or an OS issue?

Speaking of podcasts, what's the quality of life stuff like with win10? For instance, when I turn my car on, my paired iphone 6s automatically shows the podcast app so I can resume listening. Is there any sort of 'situational awareness' for apps in win10? iOS will also give me an estimate for my drive home automatically on the lock screen (although it uses apple maps and not gmaps :argh:) Even with the app gap, I'm wondering if I'm too spoiled to leave the established king behind...
