I ate a British Army ration that wasn't too different in appearance. I wouldn't necessarily call it "totally flavorless", but it was clearly the same quality as canned food.

One of these days I'll have to break out my antique cookbook collection and scan in some of the more interesting ones (unfortunately, they're currently in storage in another state, but trust me, things were weird in the kitchen 120 years ago). Most of the strange recipes came from cookbooks from the 40s and 50s, and the recipes in this cookbook seem to hearken back to that era.
