Huh, perhaps height alone is insufficient to determine if you fit in a Scion. Almost as if bodies can have different proportions. Data point if it's going to be that kind of party: I'm 6'4" and the kid across the street in the family with too many cars has a FRS.

E30s don't exist anymore so the point is moot. I don't fit in my NA Miata but at least I will die happy come the rollover. Or I'll buy a 987 or something safer, but I have a feeling they'd be a lot more boring as a DD. blk fucked around with this message at 07:22 on May 7, 2016 |

I went to the London motor show in Battersea Park yesterday. Highlights include... Not a lot. It was a bit poo poo to be honest, and if anyone was planning to go, unless you've got free tickets I wouldn't bother. It's one of those dealership supplied things with only a few models from the ones that showed up. Anyway the new MX5 was quite nice, the nismo juke rs is loving great, it's so dumb and everyone hates it and I love it. The one that surprised me the most was actually the bmw i3. It's still weird as hell looking, but it's actually quite nice inside. I liked it better than the Leaf anyway.

The hatch doesn't even look that practical for loading things, so it really boils down to increased interior volume for worse EVERYTHING. I love the whole shooting brake idea but that just looks rubbish. I think part of it is that you can't have a slab sided car anymore. If the rear didn't come in so much on the hatch they could have a far wider rear door and therefore more area. But aerodynamics and therefore fuel economy I guess. Seems like Toyota have just half assed an idea for hype. Compare that to the MX-5 Targa. Mazda made a sweet car that has compromises that people are happy to accept (compared to the original model), and will be available. I'm guessing the sort of people who want a Miata Targa are not worried about space because it's a second car. I'm pretty sure anyone shopping a FRS/BRZ in the first place are either looking for a second car or willing to put up with the compromises (for that type of car). Adding a bunch of interior volume is unlikely to change that. I guess there's a reason we don't see many successful shooting brakes. Ever.

I've always been confused as to what the expectation of the 86/BRZ/FRS/GT86 was. It was supposed to be a homage to a massively underpowered 80s coupe, and it does it's job pretty well I think. It's also pretty easy to drive fast, and if I was looking for something new and affordable this, or a Miata, would be it. A price reduction would help (although it ain't terribly expensive), but I don't think more power would necessarily shift more units; it's a niche sports coupe. Ditto a shooting brake.

I figure if I was 4" shorter and 50 lbs lighter I'd be OK in it. Can't comment on the performance because I've never been in an E30 M3. Comparing it to my 3 door Civic Si hatch, it was lighter feeling and faster once you revved it up. Didn't drive it long enough to comment on the shifter/clutch feel. I'm sure I would have be able to get used to it and liked it, but I didn't care for it in my short drive. Not fast enough, not big enough was my general takeaway from the BRZ. The not fast enough part is subjective, but the not big enough was objectively correct for me.

I just really didn't find anything all that inspiring about the car when I drove it. I'm sure I would have had a lot of fun if I'd bought it, but it seemed really underwhelming overall. The engine was such a huge let down. More power really would have added a lot to the experience. And that's coming from someone who up until last week had never owned a car with more than 200hp.
