hey guys, my knee acted up for the first time in like 2 weeks tonight. I got bummed out and left the gym, it doesn't hurt bad at all, so it may still be getting better but still, I want to get it fixed asap. my only question is which is the best type of specialist to see in regards to this stuff and lifting? a physiotherapist? sports medicine doctor? Do I need a regular doctor rec or can you book appointments straight with them?

What is going on with my lifting goonswole hivemind?

I'm doing the StrongLifts 5x5 plan but I'm starting to add on 10 kg on my squats per session, and it's hurting less and less every time. On Monday I did 60kg, couldn't walk afterward, struggled to get through the other exercises, needed painkillers the next day to sit down. Did 70kg on the Wednesday, could walk after with some pain, didn't need anything to get through Thursday. Missed Friday due to illness. Came in today, did 80kg, I'm not even loving feeling it. It's like I didn't even do them. But I remember they were deep fuckin' squats, probably the first time I've seriously struggled on the lifts. I can tell that it's gonna be DOMS out the wahzoo tomorrow but right now I'm just... like... there's no pain. Why is there no pain? Also my shoulders are starting to look seriously okay and I'm starting to develop real pecs for the first time in my soft, flabby life, I'm not used to looking in the mirror and seeing visible progress.

Is this normal for the early stages? Am I gonna hit the 5x5 100kg squat mark on Friday?

You want to see someone who typically treats athletes/active people, but your insurance may require you to get a referral from your PCP to see a specialist such as a sports PT. While chiropractors are generally quacks, it's sometimes easier to see one without a referral and there are sports chiros who specialize in ART which is geared towards loosening up adhesions and tight muscles in small doses of 15 minute sessions. There's also getting a deep tissue massage (again from someone who typically treats athletes and active people) and telling the therapist about where you're experiencing the pain in your knee. If you have health insurance, the PT and chiro will be covered but the massage probably won't. The sports PT would be more likely to show you how to stretch and roll your lower body to help with the pain, and if the sports chiro is any good they should be able to as well.

Since I added squats to back day last week they've been cake. I'll hit that weak-rear end milestone I should have hit eight years ago, in no time. Went for a sixth rep on my last set today and felt a bit of a pain on the right side of my lower back, though, so I elected to cut the workout short after leg extensions because I didn't want to exacerbate by potentially hyper-extending my back doing leg curls. Can't wait for next week.
