I recently got an MPC1000 (JJOS free with yellow fat pad upgrade) after wanting an MPC for ages, this seems like a logical thread to talk about MPCs in I hope. Currently my workflow is to do preliminary sample prep (2-bar loops and single hits mostly) in Audacity or Ableton Live, copy that over and slice up the loops directly on the MPC. Then I turn off quantize completely (except for punching in a high hat dummy track) and record everything realtime, usually in 8-bar sequences. My (rock) drummer friend came over last week, she had literally never touched a drum machine before, within five minutes she was absolutely tearing up some chopped breaks. This was a little intimidating but also super inspiring to keep me jamming and improvising on the pads. The MPC workflow is great and it just took me a couple days to figure out the basics comfortably. Still, this is a big and complicated machine and if you can think of little or big things you wished you knew when you were starting out on MPC, I'd love to hear them.

Also the standalone hardware was very much part of the point for me -- it's refreshing not having to plug up to a DAW if I just want to noodle for half an hour at the end of the day. All the same I love having a USB port to move samples back and forth. I like how it can be a two-step process where I can do prep work and cook up the underlying ingredients on the laptop, then once you dump all the ingredients into the stewpot you forget about the prep work and just play. Not that there are any objectively right/wrong ways to do things of course, I'm just curious about other people's workflow.

I love my 2500 with jjosxl even if it's not as easy as chopping poo poo up on ableton with its full set of tools.. To me, it might even be because of the limitations of the mpc. The only thing I would ask of my MPC is more than two effect slots to be honest. Conversely, does push make manipulating samples in ableton feel more like using an MPC? I had a maschine for a while, and I enjoyed how easy sample manipulation was, but gently caress the whole maschine interface. Writing it in that and then recording each track to ableton tracks was super annoying to me.

The best example I can give is on the new Simpler and transient-based slicing. It's unreal. Check this out: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=EulZyEyBZlU Basically, it allows me to drop entire tracks into Simpler and start slicing to pads immediately. Really, it only takes a bit of adjustment on the sensitivity to get the "good" transients. From there, it's like any other pad-based interface with Push/MIDI/etc. This is huge for me because very often I drop entire tracks into Simpler and start chopping from there, and with warping support, it timestretches as well. I think the new Push is more MPC-like (while still being native, unlike Maschine). Again, I do think the MPC has its uses, I just really struggled with efficiency while using it.

That's very interesting. Next time I demo Live I will be sure to try that out. Thanks for linking that. Unfortunately its not quite the song mode that the MPC provides. In MPC song mode, you can take finished sequences, arrange them vertically in chronological order in a table. Beside each sequence are adjustable parameters for sequence repeats and tempo. Its really straightforward and clicked with me the first time I used it. I haven't been able to find anything that has clicked with me as well as MPC song mode.

I skimmed past a bunch of the really basic stuff but it's good reference for "I want to do [x function]". Maybe also lose the drums for a few bars then bring em back in. Also I wanted to hear a bass line come in, nothing fancy but just some low end to accentuate the chorus bits. Well, that's troubling, because you've got to put some thought into flow, but even if you've got it wrong at first blush it's nothing that can't be finessed. What kind of lyrics are we working with, here? What sort of production style are you aiming for? Bagpipes? "Scottish motif" could mean a lot of things, honestly.
