Yeah I watched that whole video. Hbomb was pretty drat hilarious. Sure it's no secret that Fallout 3 is really bad but it was pretty great to see him go through why and then at the end when he talks about NV I'm like man I really need to go install that. Also watched the video because DOOM is still downloading.

When did everyone decide that Fallout 3 was "really bad"? I thought pretty much everyone loved it for years after it came out. I was critical of it at first because I was a big fan of Fallout 1 and 2, but 3 ended up being pretty fun. It wasn't amazing, but it was loads better than something like Oblivion.

I think Fallout 3's big problem is that it was basically a proof of concept for two better games - New Vegas, which is better written and more thoughtfully designed, and Fallout 4, which has much better core gameplay. Oblivion has the same problem. It's an unwanted middle child that does everything worse than either its predecessor or sequel.

The skybox just... ruptured open. It looked insane. And then VATS aim broke so my character constantly shot like 3 feet to the left of his targets, so I got killed by a mole rat. But the real answer is: Fallout 3 is cool if it's your first fallout, and abysmal if it's not.

I guess I really need to try New Vegas again sometime. I tried for hours to get into it, and I never saw any of the writing. I was doing some dumb kill the lizards quest and then some stupid fetch plants quest, and then some other lame mmo quest which glitched and it took me an hour to realize it and then I quit, because holy poo poo was it boring. I never started it over because I didn't want to do the dumb escort poo poo again.

I mean I put an unconscionable amount of hours into the game, but it's kinda like how I marathoned Law and Order. There's something at the core of it that's really engaging, and not even necessarily in a "turn your brain off" kind of way, but stupid poo poo constantly happens to sour your enjoyment. People call it "bad" in the sense that it falls well short of its potential and fails in categories the previous fallout games excelled at. But some parts of it are straight up garbo.

Over the years I have come to like FO3 less as more modern games reveal more of its flaws, but I still maintain that it's really not as bad as people give it poo poo for. One problem that I universally agree on is that FO3 and to an extent NV are pretty ugly video games without any mods. I'm sorry to anyone who played 3 or NV on consoles.

They often stand still and either only look around or move, almost never both at the same time. Circle strafing never happens at all. Its extremely cringey to watch. Controller is definitely slower looking in doom than mouse and keyboard, but anybody with a decent bit of experience on xbox or ps4 will look a million times better than that polygon video. I also liked Oblivion, I even played it with just a fan patch that only fixed bugs and while I can see why people don't like it and I don't think I'll ever play it again I did enjoy it. I played a couple of hours of Skyrim and got bored though so I feel like I got my fill of Elder Scrolls and Bethesda developed Fallout with Oblivion and 3 respectively.

So I rented Doom tonight and I have to say the Snapmap feature is powerful but the multiplayer lobby browser (or lack of one) is total rear end. You can't just see what lobbies are public and waiting for players, you have to either join a friend or a quickplay playlist. You can pick a map specifically but you won't get any random people joining because only people who have picked that same map at that time and are refreshing while you have that lobby up will see it. I did the quickplay co-op list a few times and it always picks Onslaught and while it's a cool little demonstration I got sick of it really loving quick. Especially since the Hell Knights are cheating fuckfaces who just run past literally everything and make you lose immediately, no matter how much DPS you have. Oh yeah and even though it says it's a "playlist" it actually just picks one map and shunts you to it, after that map is over it just starts the lobby over with the same map, so everyone leaves. It's a really bad system and unless they fix it I will probably not bother with anything but a rental. It's really stupid to waste all that cool map tech with a lovely lobby system. I bought that Gunscape game that's on sale, and even though the levels aren't nearly as complex and the amount of people playing at a given time is in the single digits, you can at least loving see what games are going on and join one. Also Gunscape lets you join mid map, which is really important when you don't have many running games to pick from. I suppose it's too late to put that tech into Doom if it's even possible with their architecture but it's just another frustration. The other two modes are probably okay but I concentrated on trying the SnapMap since that's what interested me

Fallout 3's biggest merit is translating the Fallout universe into an FPS. I think people really underrate this feat. What Bethesda did from the perspective of estabilishing core gameplay mechanics, the way the interactions work, the systems present in the game was an enormous amount of work. Obsidian really showed what you can do with of all of that but their game wouldn't be half as good without hundreds of good decisions that Bethesda made in the first place. In that sense it's important to acknowledge FO3. It doesn't exist in a void anymore though as New Vegas showed what the premise is capable of and it's a shame that in turn FO4 scrapped Obsidian's work in developing the concept for the game.
