I don't think I've ever seen Flash drawn in a way I like but that artist is only slightly less not-my-thing than the last Flash artist.

I own nearly everything he's written or drawn and the thought of it becoming a complete collection is really depressing.

Another reminder that Doc should have a GL series to draw.

Incidentally, Doc Shaner is saying on Twitter that Darwyn was a huge part in getting the comic together.

He passed away this morning. So sad. I've just been making my way through the Brubaker Catwoman run that starts with the graphic novel and first few issues drawn by Cooke. He was one of the great ones.

DC's press release
http://www.dccomics.com/blog/2016/05/14/darwyn-cooke

quote:

Darwyn Cooke had a vision of the DC Universe that was uniquely his own, yet embraced by everyone. Once you saw his timeless designs and concepts for Batman, Catwoman, Superman, Wonder Woman, Green Lantern or any other character, you immediately adopted his jubilant interpretation of these heroes as your own and wanted more. His take on the most iconic heroes in the world were breathtakingly direct and elegant, powerful and cool. His were some of the most beautiful, fun DC superhero images we have ever seen.

"Darwyn Cooke lived life like a character from a Micky Spillane novel, a throwback to a bygone era that was, more than occasionally, reflected in his work," said DC Comics Co-Publisher Dan DiDio. "He was both compassionate and combative, approaching everything he did with a tenaciousness and temerity that is now unheard of in a world afraid to offend. The simplistic brilliance of his art and the natural flow of his storytelling not only elevated but enhanced all projects he touched and his passion and love of comics was reflected in every panel of every page. Working with Darwyn was not without its challenges. There were times we'd spend hours arguing over story then go months without talking, but we always found our way back, drawn together by the common bond and friendship comics creates. This is an industry-wide loss that I feel personally, but the sadness is mitigated in the knowing that the beauty and grace of his art will forever stand the test of time and be a monument to all that is great about comics."

Darwyn was one of our medium’s true innovators. A gifted artist and master storyteller, Darwyn began his career as a magazine art director and graphic designer. After answering an ad placed by Warner Bros animator Bruce Timm, Darwyn entered the world of animation, where he contributed to such shows as Batman: The Animated Series, Superman: The Animated Series and Men In Black: The Series. From there, Darwyn made the leap into print comics, where his character design was never more effective, enduring or entrancing. It was the look and honest simplicity of his characters for which Cooke became famous—as first seen in his breakout work Batman: Ego published over 15 years ago today and then followed up by his popular and critically acclaimed work on Catwoman: Selina's Big Score and The Spirit. Even after 15 years, Darwyn's design for Catwoman is still the one used today in both comics and inspired the look for Catwoman on the hit TV show, Gotham.

An Eisner-award winning artist and accomplished writer, Darwyn has been a much-loved and respected member of the comics community. He lent his signature retro style to all corners of the DC Universe, from Jonah Hex to Before Watchmen to Vertigo Comic’s The Twilight Children and, of course, his master work, DC: The New Frontier. His bold, direct style, often compared to the works of Joe Kubert, Alex Toth and Jack Kirby, reflected his down to earth, no nonsense personality. Darwyn Cooke always claimed that he was a lucky man to have such a wonderful family, friends, and such a wonderful life. He lived that life with the same brilliance and fearlessness that so permeated his work. And for those of us who knew this one-of-a-kind and genuine soul, we were lucky as well.

I don't know about reading much more into Dan's comment than just complimenting Cooke's tenacity against regular polite society who'd rather take something on the chin.

Example I saw today:

http://www.bleedingcool.com/2016/05/14/the-comic-book-industry-remembers-darwyn-cooke/

"Darwyn Cooke was a man possessed of righteous fury, whether over the quality of a comic, a none headed decision by a comics publisher or a bar fight defending a young woman’s honour. He fought the good fight.

But my favourite example has to be when he believed that a rejected pitch he and his crew had made to Marvel Comics for a line of All-Ages titles, was used to inform their subsequent Marvel Age line of titles without Darwyn’s involvement.

True or not, during Wizard World Los Angeles, Darwyn Cooke walked up to now-Marvel EIC, then-Senior Editor Axel Alonso, picked up a pint of Guinness and threw it over Axel, with fellow editor Nick Lowe having to restrain Axel from following suit.

The story spread like wildfire. Another Marvel colleague amused by the incident told me that, after Darwyn shortly signed with DC Comics afterwards, that this was the first exclusive comic book contract he had seen signed in beer."

e: He definitely seemed to have a divisive personality. When the Comixology sale went up a few days ago, before the news, I saw quite a bit of anti-Cooke sentiment and a whole blog dedicated to inflammatory quotes.

So don't worry
Darwyn was known for speaking his mind and not giving much of a gently caress about what people thought of him, and that went for his art as well. And while I think Didio's comment is misplaced, I don't think he meant it with any ill intent. If there is anger in it, then it must be more directed to the fact that Cooke died so suddenly after his family went public with the news (though I imagine Didio has known for some time, since he's an executive.)

Im just upset. And DiDio is the kind of guy to get upset about how 'sensitive' and 'PC' comics fans are these days, so I probably assumed too much based on that comment.

I'll never forget Cooke very publicly railed against Kevin Smith for writing the scene in his Green Arrow #1 with OIlie going down on Black Canary in a kitchen. Cooke called Smith something hilariously, profanely appropriate and accused him of ruining comics by pulling them away from their intended all-ages audience.

Early solicits for Superwoman and Deathstroke.
http://www.newsarama.com/29275-first-look-dc-s-superwoman-and-deathstroke-august-solicits.html

Lois Lane's got Superman's powers... and they're killing her!! She's a reverse She-Thor.
It'd be cool if they laid off the powers being a burden thing directly after what's happening to N52 Clark right now and just let her be Superwoman.
Not sure how they won't confuse everyone with the two sets of Lois and Clark, even if they always keep old Clark = Super, old Lois = civ, new Clark = civ, new Lois = Super. I'm sure it'll lead to some cute little situations, but I can't see it being easy to get people on the uptake that they aren't each other's secret identities.
Lana and Steel featuring again is neat.

I'm guessing this is going to be as confusing as possible, so the circular emblem woman is Earth 3 Lois, who also calls herself Superwoman, and red and white lady is the "Ultra Woman" that the solicit mentions who will be unrelated to the Earth 3 Ultraman that might still be around if Earth 3 Superwoman is still around.
