hostile apostle posted:Y'all done with the circlejerk? "ya'll done with the circlejerk?" *posts the most elaborately contrived artillery wank-material video on the planet* not pictured: the 144 hours prior to that at-my-command artillery mission where the battalion commander and smaj belittled the gunny for having one paladin's treads slightly offset from the other 7; the 2 extra days spent rebooting AFATDS because it crashed when entering in this morning's MET data for no reason, the panicked 30 minutes after impact when the FO couldn't positively affirm having personally observed the impact of all 8 individual rounds, the monsoon that buried the entire battery in mud shortly afterwards, and the poo poo-eating grin on the battalion commander's driver's face after jumping into the group photo with the guidon with a full 11 hours of rest in the HMMWV drivers seat.

hostile apostle posted:PKK shoots down Turkish helicopter God drat, that thing just disintegrates after the SAM cuts the tail off. I don't know if it was just shear stress or in combination with some fragmentation that snapped the rotors, unless it's the ejection system blowing explosive bolts.

Massive structural damage from the loss of the tail area + resonance from the rotors would guess. What kind of missile was that anyways it didn't leave much of a smoke trail after the first second or so of flight.

It's tagging an AH-64. Was it here that we had the discussion over the value of rotary CAS? Edit: Super Cobra as determined below Godholio fucked around with this message at 17:24 on May 15, 2016 |

do choppers like that have missile approach warnings? why no flares?

Not to go into opsec poo poo, but its a heat seeker missile and any sort of detection system would have to be able to see the flash of the launch or be some sort of active system that looked for high energy projectiles coming at it. And like I mentioned the missile had very little smoke so the pilot would have had to see it right as it launched or hes loving dead.

I'm pretty sure that's not an AH-64 in that GIF, nor do I think it's either of the Turkish equivalents. Look at its rotor: it's got four blades, but they're not uniformly-spaced. It also doesn't appear to have fixed gear.

It looked like it had quite a narrow fuselage, could it be a Cobra?
|
# ? May 15, 2016 08:24 |

The first thing I saw about it said it was an Apache, but the youtube video says Super Cobra. Didn't know Turkey had those.
|
# ? May 15, 2016 08:44 |

Yeah it was a Whiskey Cobra (two blade rotor)...the four blade effect was from the frame rate

If a heat-seeking missile breaking an aircraft in half is seen as technical failure, that would be accurate.

https://youtu.be/JCM3d4nkUmk Original video, including an artillery hit earlier on. I think the high-pitched noise right before launch is the missile's gas generator-powered turbine spinning up to power the electronics.

VikingSkull posted:Yeah, imagine what Iraq or Afghanistan would look like with substantial stocks of MANPADS and the trained operators behind them I was an aviation S2 and yeah, that was always fun advice to give our pilots. "Yep, make sure your CMWS is working, otherwise get hosed" But there was a buyback program in Afghanistan the whole time the US was in the country because we knew how loving stupid it was trying to fight in a mountainous country where the insurgents had MANPADS. That said, the most spectacular and catastrophic shootdowns were usually RPGs against hovering CH47s and the occasional DSHK, hauled up a mountainside, to swiss cheese an apache or whatever.

the stats in Vietnam alone should have been a lesson, but I feel like wires got crossed somewhere like the advantages of being able to strike short distances quickly at low altitude for an assault, that's cool, but anyone who seriously thinks gunships are decent CAS, I dunno maybe in a permissive environment like a catholic girls bedroom who grew up with a single mother, maybe?
