I can't believe I got wrecked in the orb run because orbs of fire reduced my base int to 2 and a summoned nex brainless'ed me as an entire pack of angels appeared. Thats the third time an easy win has been lost because of dumb mistakes.

And on a related note, killing entire packs of enemies with reflection is even better.

Man, I wish.

I'd want to use it, but Gong is actually kinda garbage stats. Only +18sh on a medium, -5 ev and no stat bonuses is really bad. Basically any half decent large shield beats it. The only time Gong shines is when you don't have the shield skill to use large shields properly.

The experience difference of 0->15 versus 15->25 (7050 vs 15000 given 0 aptitude) means that Gong is a much cheaper way to get large shield like bonuses, spending the saved experience elsewhere. Sure, it falls off with Extended and having the experience to do whatever, but there are better reasons to get rid of Gong by Extended (but it picks up value again for Zigscumming due to getting enemies close to your Makhleb Tornado faster).

Doorvault is a large square vault made of runed doors that is an experiment in curiosity in relation to cats (where players substitute as the cat).

In older versions, it was made of secret doors instead!

It's one giant outer runedoor layer, then about 2 layers of 1x1 doors, then a 4x4 juicy center of incredibly dangerous enemies. Like, if you find one in Zot it's going to have multiple orbs of fire and probably some ancient liches and curse toes as well. You peel open the outside and make your way into the center, then suddenly the entire thing unfolds and you're in the open against a huge pack of terrifying enemies.

Doorvault is great.

e: It was better before the outer layer got changed to a runedoor, then you could autoexplore into it.

VVV Fair, but I think the runegate has ruined the original magic of the doorvault anyway. Luckily there are a couple good panlord vaults that carry the tradition of the doorvault.

Haven't won yet, but have splatted a couple of characters in Zigs, one because I needed cmut badly.

The removal of rMut has really been one of the decisions that's been the most obviously, broadly bad, and every character I play who gets far enough for it to matter bears that out. Clarity too, if to a lesser degree, for postgame.

I'm wondering what the role of Mutations are in the game now. I mentioned this earlier, but playing a dozen games this tournament kind of reinforces what my gut told me at the beginning. You just save cMut for mutations that will literally kill you (teleportits, zerkitis, shoutitis to a lesser extent), or you use them to peel away really bad muts (frail and friends). The decisions aren't really interesting since burning your last cMut on -2 Stat is obviously a big mistake, but acquiring one of the aforementioned 'kill you' muts without being able to deal with it is also dumb. I mean, this isn't really new either in that if you had rMut and got a really bad mut and had no way of ridding yourself of it, that's dumb too, so really I guess the change just makes that scenario more visible.

rMut and making it the default end-game amulet isn't nearly as interesting as the current setup, so I think the change is good in making amulets an actual choice, but mutations themselves are just really awkward. I still think the solution is to remove or rethink the exceptionally bad mutations and encouraging players to actually play with mutations. I think the metric I'd use is, 'If a player has huge gaps in their character, would they be willing to chance mut potions/food for a chance to fill those gaps?' I think if the answer is, 'Yes, sometimes', then muts are in a better spot. Right now, voluntarily invoking mutation is a bad idea 99% of the time.

I got my first win with any caster today, a six rune DEWz that probably could have been a 15 rune (i could cast necromutation, glaciate and tornado with solid resists) if i was not a big coward who just wanted the win marked off for my tournament team (and last time I got cocky I lost my GrEE to death jellies)

I actually had to bail out of Tomb halfway through Tomb: 1 when a death curse dropped me to negative strength, and came back after refreshing my stats beating up Elf this time wisely with a ring of sustain abilities to accompany necromutation. After that it was just incredibly slow and dull grinding through one mummy after another.

Now that I've finally beaten crawl as both a Tab-to-win barbarian and a caster I feel confident to start dying with silly combos again.

If you want the level 2 banner, pretty easy on some of the less popular won combos. For the level 3, you are pretty much guaranteed to be required to do a 15 rune (HOAK looks pretty doable at needing to beat 15 runes in 164999 turns if you want to give that a shot).

As a fairly new player, I'm still not sure how I feel about mutations. They've got prominence and resources like they're a major, primary game mechanic, but the design space isn't really fleshed out for that. It's a lot of pomp and circumstance over what basically boils down to "roll 1d100 and check table 3A for results".

That was really stressful, my usual games are a lot slower paced. That's actually the first time I've won with three runes. I got wrecked twice on what should have been winning runs because I wasn't used to Zot or the Orb run being that dangerous.

It's also my first win of the tournament despite having 4 other tier 3 banners that require doing extended because I'm dumb.

e: Also if you want that banner don't be like me, pick something other than Tengu. Tabbing rapidly while fighting casters who can take off 70%+ hp in a single LCS/PA is bad for your mental wellbeing.

The game lasted 06:42:40 (117002 turns).
I played so badly the last few weeks. Glad that is done with.

tomb also still sucks, which is entirely beating a dead horse, but it's funny how a character log looks like when you get to the part where tomb happened
People do like to talk about the deadliness of Tomb here, but thing is, it is extremely predictable. Once you understand how to do Tomb, you can do it fairly reliably. Especially considering that you are as fast or faster than anything dangerous in there. Doing it safely on a melee character often involves a crazy amount of stair dancing. Your goal is pull any priests/greaters up the stairs so you can finish them off, heal, and repeat. Charging into groups is what gets people killed.

Now, if Tomb had enemies that could lock the stairs, it would get MUCH more deadly.

Sometimes, this game is just magical. :allears:

pre:
The boggart mumbles some strange words.
The stone giant throws a large rock.
The large rock hits you but does no damage.
The large rock dissolves into shadows!
The stone giant throws a large rock. The large rock hits the boggart!!!
 The boggart dies!

How do I set an autotravel stop or a -more- prompt? I'm seeing lots of conflicting methods, and the one I tried didn't work.

Now that death scarabs can slow you through rN, it's gotten a little tougher, but generally you can run backwards once you see them and not get harassed by other stuff at the same time. I also like having Silence for gmummies to prevent the hordes of emperor scorps/death scarabs.

Incidentally, doing Tomb with *rage is super annoying (made a couple of missteps in slime and aiming for Vow of Courage III).
