Been a few years since I sold my old stereo equipment in a move, but I guess I'm getting back into it, because I found a Marantz 1060 just sitting on the curb a block away from my apartment. It had a little grime on the front, and someone had written on it in red pen (yep, I'm sure you needed the note that aux 2 was "MIXER", dude), but that came off pretty easily. It has a Stereo Exchange sticker on the back and the inside was dusty but not 40-years-old dusty so I think it's been serviced recently. Everything seems to work perfectly but one of the RCA inputs for the tape deck is a little wobbly and some of the pots are a little scratchy. Now I've got to find a matching TT and speakers... Ebay tells me this turntable alone might be worth the price..quote:This was my husbands stereo system from the 70's. There is an Empire 698 Turntable, a Kenwood KA-9100 Amp, a Kenwood KT-8300 Radio Tuner, a Technics RS-677 Cassette Deck and 2 large JVC speakers.

A KA 9100 is a super well liked unit amongst kenwood fans. I have the baby brother to this set and I love it. $500 is not too much to ask, even without the TT. It's a steal with the Empire for sure. Pounce on it.

Just inherited this "The Capehart" from the 50s. Still the original tube amp, AM works (and is offset about 1/3 way up the dial) but FM doesn't. Turntable has speed selection from 16-78 but only 45 works at the moment. Should be fun to poke at. Qwijib0 fucked around with this message at 17:10 on May 4, 2016 |

It powers up, but unfortunately doesn't work: It came with the coolest corded remote however, and Ebay seems to think it might be worth something: The records that came with it: quote:Pink Floyd- Darkside of the Moon There are quite a few more, but thats as far as I got with my list tonight Dr.Caligari fucked around with this message at 02:39 on May 5, 2016 |

Better than $1 each, which yeah is maybe overpaying but it's all in good shape and in one big bundle. I would have taken it too.Qwijib0 posted:Just inherited this "The Capehart" from the 50s. I restored an old AM tube radio a couple years ago. It wasn't too bad. First thing is get a diagram and replace all the capacitors with new ones. The old ones go bad and could wreck things. I've been a fan of his videos for a while now. To be honest, this seems all the more perfect now for a bedroom/office/kitchen setup at the '$100 off' promo price it's currently at. I was thinking hard about putting together another bedroom setup after moving later this summer, probably using vintage craigslist finds. I may instead go with this, some attractive powered speakers, and a wireless audio module.

I just replaced silver-faced Technics SU-7700 with a black-faced Akai AM-2600 in my secondary stereo. I guess some people would consider that a significant downgrade, as the Technics is bigger and beefier despite delivering 10WPC less than the Akai, with marginally better THD and SNR, but I thought it was kinda ugly for a retro amp, and I hated the pushbutton input switches. The switches on the Akai feel higher quality, especially the input select knobs, and more importantly it has a -15dB/-30dB mute function. I now consider this feature essential to make the loudness function actually work correctly by tapering off the higher you go on the volume dial. 12 o'clock on the dial is where the loudness effect starts to drop off noticeably, but that's super goddamn hella loud in a smallish room. Being able to apply an additional attenuation on top of the volume control is a godsend. And it was in absolutely 100% mint condition, so I just had to have it, even at $75. (Not my picture) I think it looks better than the Technics, in a kinda "serious piece of measuring equipment" way. KozmoNaut fucked around with this message at 21:31 on May 11, 2016 |

It's actually very dark gray with black knobs, it looks great in real life. Sansui was never really big here, even though most of the other Japanese brands sold really well, especially Pioneer. My parents had a stereo with an Akai receiver, Akai turntable, Pioneer(or Philips?) CD player and Pioneer HPM-60 speakers up until I was maybe 10-12 years old, so maybe that's why I tend to gravitate towards those. KozmoNaut fucked around with this message at 12:01 on May 11, 2016 |

I'm not entirely sure this is the right place for this but here goes nothing! About three months ago I bought a Pioneer A-Z570 Receiver and a Pioneer SP-Z570 Equalizer (two different machines from the same line) and they were pretty much precisely what I wanted for decently intensive turntable use. At least, until two days ago when suddenly the receiver (and just the receiver) failed to turn on. A quick glance on the inside showed nothing out of the ordinary so I wasn't sure what to do but the interesting this is that suddenly yesterday, when I was trying pretty much anything I could think of, that the receiver somehow turned on. A quick test with the turntable showed that it still wasn't working (no music) and it started not-turning on again, but at least I know it's still working a bit. Anyone with more experience than me (ie. everyone) have any idea?

I picked up a Technics SL-Q210 with a new Tonar cartridge and listened to it for about 30 minutes before selling it on for a $10 profit. I then picked up a Bang & Olufsen TX2 with MMC5 that sorta matches my stereo. The B&O tangential turntables have started going for fantasy prices, with many of them going for €300-€800. At right under $200, it's the most expensive component in my vintage stereo. I'm gonna guess the Technics was technically a better turntable. I picked up an 80s Sony CD-changer, a CDP-C5M for free because the door wasn't opening. I fixed the door, but it wouldn't read disks, so it was given away again. Heavy as poo poo, metal construction, cool to look at the motors spin, but if it doesn't work I can't keep it. I picked up a Yamha CDX-393 with cool orange display for free since it had started developing problems reading discs, but that appears to have fixed itself on the car ride on the way home. Don't know what to do with it yet, but maybe I'll get a matching Yamaha receiver or an old NAD to hook it up to. Finally I got a region modded Sony DVP-S7700 for $35, which once upon a time was a $2000 DVD/CD player. It refuses to play certain DVDs, but CDs seem to work just fine. Giant and heavy hunk of metal, with a glow in the dark remote! Does RGB over SCART on my B&O MX4000.

They show up relatively regularly/attainably priced in New England and I always go through the same mental song and dance. They're gorgeous pieces of kit.

It's a shame about CD players. CDs sound really good but CD players just aren't cool. None of them have the 70s design and most of the suffer from being covered in little advertising logos all over their face. Also I guess you can just go buy a new DVD player for $20 and it will sound as good as any CD player ever made. Not ragging on you evobatman, just wish there was a reason to get a cool CD player and pull my CD collection out of storage instead of listening to the rips on my media server.

There's also current gen audiophile CD players that are styled after turntables or tube amps but those are awful in a different way. And cost $10,000.

Well poo poo. Just for fun I put my Bang & Olufsen stereo up for a fantasy price I thought nobody would pay. Now I've got an offer for it at the asking price, and I'm very internally conflicted. I do love it very much, but it is obsolete and I need the space and money! Edit: Well I talked to the guy, and he's a serious B&O and Tandberg collector that would put most of us to shame.
