Isn't central Australia supposed to be one of the most tectonically inactive areas on the planet?

evilbastard posted:

Central Australia is actually the most earthquake prone part of Australia, with a 6.6 on 22 January 1988. There was also a 5.8 at Marryat Creek a few years earlier. (Newcastle was a 5.6). I bet right now there's a bunch of helicopter charters being made for geologists to go out trying to see if they get more huge cracks appearing from this one.

There is lots of talk about the ground cracks and deformities that appear after these types of earthquakes, and investigations into rock structures that show a long history of this occuring, There doesn't seem to be any explanation as to why Central Australia keeps getting these, though.

The commonly accepted reason that we get earthquakes through there (I think the zone is the kimberlys through to the middle of SA or so) is because the australian tectonic plate is being bent in such a way by the subduction of the indian end of the plate and along the indonesion boundary, and the difference in speed that the south of the plate is moving compared to the north of the plate (india is being impeded by the himalayas, slowing it down compared to the northeasten part of the plate, while the southern boundary with the antartic plate is chugging along at a pretty constant rate; I can't lay hands on accurate figures right at the moment because my net is being rear end but the south and northeast are moving at around 70mm/year and india's around 40mm/year or so) means there's a belt of stress and torsion, which causes the earthquakes. It's called intraplate stress, and it explains how you can get significant earthquakes in areas like that without being near active mountainbuilding or rifting sites. The centre of aus isn't the best place to shove that poo poo anyway since there's artesian basin and carbonate bedrock through there which means there's a good flow of subsurface water.

I did read the previous page before posting, and Di Natale exploiting cheap labour wasn't mentioned at all. I just found it interesting that the Aus Greens are also bad now, since for ages they were the last Green Party to still be left wing.

It's definitely a problem. The Greens also started as a state party in Tasmania, and the Tas Greens have decided to send lovely Eco-liberals with no lefty economic bonafides whatsoever as their contributions to the national parliament.

Di Natale was always poo poo. Greens policies are still decided on by the members though so they're still left wing. He needs to be replaced by comrade Bandt asap but that means getting states to push for a leadership election. Hopefully after the federal election things will get moving, otherwise we may have to apply some non violent direct action.

From what I understand, the Greens don't elect a leader because officially speaking there isn't one leader of the Greens. There's a Parliamentary Leader elected by the Parliamentary Party because convention necessitates a leader and the media and public find it a lot easier to understand than trying to explain horizontal leadership models. I'm honestly surprised the latest National Convention didn't change the rule on electing Senior Officials in the Party, but maybe they're waiting until after the election so RDN doesn't get rolled.

Correct, he is technically only the Parliamentary leader, doesn't stop him from addressing himself as THE leader constantly though. Also doesn't stop him being a wealthy man who pays his live in servants $150 a week and charges them $300 for the privilege of living on his private ranch. Did you know when RDN is flying around like a real politician he has an assistant carry his bags? Now this is the right man to lead a socialist party!
