I'm angry at myself for having read Jack many years ago. I literally remember nothing about the plot, I just remember repulsive art and have a queasy feeling of unease when someone brings it up. I had hoped it doesn't exist anymore :v:

I think keenspot was still a thing where webcomics were when I quit reading it.

Unfortunately I have really good retention of most things I've read and I read Jack for a while after finding out about its infamy from the Gamefaqs forums when I was, like, fifteen, so I remember it went a lot deeper than that. It was a really grotesque and preachy Inferno ripoff, yeah, but it also went into some weird tangents that you didn't see even in other z-grade webcomics at the time. Like the arc that was made up almost entirely of Nine Inch Nails lyrics. Or the time the comic spent almost a year on a grimdark Starship Troopers knockoff that had nothing to do with anything else.

Then there's the fact that the artist managed to self-insert himself twice, once as a normal dude mugging the panels and again as literal Satan.

That one was ridiculously tame after all the nonsense prior and I dropped the comic before the arc that discussed it in detail anyway.

It was also signposted years before that point, when the incarnated sin of Envy was revealed to be the afterlife's last remaining human who literally introduced himself by saying, "loving furries..."

If that turned out to be the case, I never heard about it. As far as I know, Keenspot fell from prominence when the majority of the creative types left and started their own syndicates and websites after Keenspot failed to properly promote their comics, instead choosing to spend their marketing dollars promoting Crosby-run properties.

Plus, these days, do that many people use aggregator sites? Even among the small webcomics I read, I only see a few 'vote for me on topwebcomics', and even that seems futile, as all the top spots are occupied by stuff that, at least from the outside, seems like garbage and porn comics.

I wasn't sure if it was Keenspot, which is why I was asking. All I remember is that it was thinking "Wanting to interact with tons of webcomic people when almost everyone involved at the time was a teenager, what a surprise."

Yeah Hiveworks is the closest equivalent around and I don't think anyone uses the actual list part. Affiliates are a really 2000s internet thing. I don't think even Japanese websites have those anymore and those keep onto old trends forever.

A Wizard of Goatse

i don't think i've ever really used the hiveworks site itself but those little links bars sometimes remind me that some of the slower updating comics exist

it helps that there's not about a 1:1000 good comic to trash ratio on there

Let's talk about literally anything else. I'll go first.

MONSTER PULSE!

So as someone pointed out in the comments, Rjinder has led Lulenski to believe the monsters don't have any kind of will or personality of their own. This seems really critical in what she's been saying and doing the last few strips, in particular the way her offer is stated--"return the monsters safely to your bodies" is something that, from her point of view, would sound unambiguously good to the kids. It also seems that this is What Lulenski Said, and the kids' refusal of it means that the reason they were attacked in the last chapter was to get them to come in for Shell.

(I still feel like Team Rocket has absolutely no idea what's really going on here, and a lot of trouble could have been saved if anyone had talked about anything. But when superpowered monsters are involved, the situation sort of comes pre-escalated.)

Knowing the way Magnolia loves to gently caress with people's expectations, I wouldn't be surprised if the deus ex machina device proves too good to be true and just makes things even worse / gets someone killed. That said, I'd love to see Bina's reaction when confronted with the choice to have Ayo reintegrated with her, because she's sort of come to terms with the fact that she's probably not going to live to see her 20s because of her, but it would also mean giving up someone who means the world to her emotionally to have her "normal" life back. Tough choice.

Ehh, I don't think the choice is even gonna come up, just because she distrusts Shell that much. And because the thing probably isn't even going to work. It seems more like they're going to force her to try it, or they would have if Team Rocket had actually been able to bring them in.

(Of course, I'm still getting ahead of myself here assuming that's what the attacks last chapter were all about, but it seems like a safe bet.)

Oh yeah, the B-Team was definitely sent out to bring them in by force. All their dialog points to it. Though I'm guessing that has more of Rjinder's fingerprints on it than Lulenski's, because Enid straight up tells West that she'll kill him if that's the only way to bring Guzzy back to Shell and it won't be that big of a deal, especially since we now know that getting their hands on Guzzy was their #1 priority in that whole debacle.

Yeah, since the organ and the host are connected, killing the host kills the monster, and if the monster is a vital organ, killing it kills the host.

Yeah, so, it would be kind of stupid to send an operative out telling them "Kill the host if you need to, just bring back the monster!" because that would kill the monster...

Well, in that case it was because The Roger Thing was his head, so she was bashing them both in.

This is a good question though--we absolutely know that killing the monster kills its human, but I don't believe the other way around has ever happened. At least, not on screen--the whole thing about "quick stabilization" implies that there were at least a few incidents where vital organs were removed and people died because of it before they came up with a way to accelerate whatever connection forms. So Shell knows whether or not a monster can survive without its original host, but I don't think it's been made clear to the audience.

I'd place my bets on monsters being able to survive independently, just because of all the anatomical details Lulenski takes note of here. But everything to do with the monsters is way in the realm of "science so advanced it might as well be magic" so who knows.
