If you just want talk and texts, have you considered a cheap prepaid phone? You end up paying per minute and per text so they aren't great for long conversations, but it might be okay if you are happy with your regular service and just need something elsewhere occasionally. Plus you can roleplay that you are a drug dealer or something using a burner phone.

That's a good idea. My only concern is that I assume that I couldn't move my number back and forth between phones? Could forwarding be used somehow? I don't know how that would work if my original phone is somewhere without service though.

You can setup call forwarding. Once setup even if your phone doesn't have coverage it gets forwarded. Any calls you make of course show from whatever random number.

This is a scenario where google voice comes in handy. 2 mins and I can turn any phone into my cell phone.

Also, what phone do you have? I think Cricket does wifi calling since ATT does. If you do the MiFi just wifi call on that.

Don't assume that Verizon phones work everywhere, just because their color chart says so. There are plenty of places in rural Pennsylvania, where my Verizon phone was gasping for air (bouncing between zero and one bar, awhile draining battery like a champ), while T-Mobile devices had no problem grabbing reception. Actually, nobody but T-Mobile had reception in those areas.

I always assumed that is there is a tower, all providers work, period. Could someone explain why it's not so?

About the only carrier that has consistent coverage nationwide is Verizon. I don't think there's anywhere that's covered by someone else but NOT Verizon. Expect to pay out the rear end compared to Cricket or accept a much more limited data plan, but I do believe your phone will work on it without any issues (though it would be best to go to a corporate store to get set up since Verizon is still weird about giving you a SIM without a phone, even when it's completely within their policies to do so for phones that allow it).

Fwiw I have AT&T and get good reception in South Central Wisconsin and NorCal/Vancouver/Seattle (so presumably the rest of the PNW as well), but they have pretty similarly mediocre options for plans so maybe not much upside relative to Google voice etc.

Because not every carrier puts their antennas and such on every tower. It's not really any more complicated than that.

He's on Cricket which is prepaid AT&T, which is why I didn't mention it. I think Cricket won't roam, so there's a possibility that if T-Mobile works at his parents' house that he would get reception on AT&T postpaid that he's not getting on Cricket.

My brother has AT&T and he had reception. I'm sure his phone was roaming.

I'm upgrading from the Sony Xperia Z3 since it's about time for a new high-end phone and want to give this one away between now and July. The camera on the Z3 wasn't cutting it (especially the FFC) so a great camera is a must. Vanilla android doesn't appeal to me now that I moved on from rooting and XDA; as long as the UI is good. And must have support for T-Mobile's LTE bands (which outside the carrier, only the Nexus phones and Moto X support). Convince me to not get the Samsung S7 Edge.

We are on MetroPCS and my wife wants a Galaxy S5. I'm having a really hard time tracking one down that is new-in-box. Also, would we need the T-Mobile version of the S5 (SM-G900T ?) in order for it to work with MetroPCS? Are S5's unlocked by default?

Endless Mike

I'm sure new S5's are out there, but stock is probably getting thin as it's a two year old phone and Samsung doesn't really continue production like that, I don't think. If you want full functionality on MetroPCS, then yeah, you'll need a T-Mobile model. T-Mobile phones are all unlocked, as far as I'm aware, but that's a T-Mobile thing, not an S5 thing.

My wife and I each have $30 T-Mobile pre-paid plans but lately that hasn't included enough minutes for her (100). MetroPCS seems to have a pretty good deal - same price for unlimited T+T plus enough data to keep us swimming in pornoes away from the house, but it seems like they give you free budget phones too. We both have Nexus 5s that we bought in 2014, are these cheap phones like the LG K7, HTC Desire 626s, and Samsung Galaxy Grand Prime going to be comparable to what we're using now, or an upgrade/downgrade?

More like a side-grade. They'll be shittier for sure but they will have new batteries. I know my Nexus 5 is feeling long in the tooth with a failing battery at this point.

That said you don't have to take the phones, you can just use the ones you have while you save up for good phones. Also it should be mentioned that Project Fi will get you expanded coverage for possibly less money and offers Nexus 5x's for $200.

Any LG service centers near where you live? Had the battery on my old N5 swapped out for just the cost of the battery itself (around $15) at a service center, and it feels like I have a brand new phone again.

The girlfriend is flying over the Atlantic to San Francisco on Wednesday and will be staying in the Silicon Valley for around 3 weeks. Prices for data roaming with our provider are ridiculously high in the US at 1€/MB, so it would be nice to get a nofew-strings-attached prepaid sim for her during that time.

She's got an international Nexus 5 so I guess AT&T/T-Mobile networks only ?
She doesn't really need SMS or minutes, only data but an occasional call to her colleagues there shouldn't be too expensive though. 1-2GB would probably be sufficient.
Would like to stay below 20-30$. Any suggestions?

Cricket or ATT. Both have prepaid plans for $35-45 for the month. Call, text, 3ish GB of data.

Gummy Bear Heaven ... It's where I go when the world is too mean.
I'm stuck deciding which phone to buy to replace my broken 2014 Moto X. Anyone want to convince me one way or another?

2014 Moto X - On sale for $150 with promo code. Delivery estimate of July 1. Active display. Motorola's quick actions (eg, twist for camera). Fairly up-to-date OS, but probably no more updates for the life of the device.

Nexus 5X - $250 from Project Fi (for the 32 GB model). Probably show up this week or Monday. Fingerprint sensor. Pure Android updates forever*.

All the other specs seem pretty comparable. I really like the idea of having a Nexus device again and was going to get the 5X until I saw the $50 off promo code for the Moto X. Man, that $150 price is attractive.

Ignoring the carrier (Project Fi vs sticking with TMobile), is there a consensus on which is better. Seems like a tossup to me.

*I have a Galaxy Nexus, I know this won't be forever.

The 5X camera should be way better, too. But going from a Moto X 2014 to Nexus 6 did really make me miss Moto's active display implementation. I don't know if the Nexus 5X is any better, but the 6's active display is inconsistent enough that I just use the power button.

Just phone calls? I'd recommend Koodo / Pre-owned Moto E.

edit: Or get a used flip phone off ebay and a prepaid plan from Koodo, Fido, or Virgin. Only trick with the latter is making sure that phone works on a given carrier's frequency band.

Need a recommendation.

I'm on Verizon. A couple years back I got a Motorola Droid Turbo. It's served me fairly well. My too biggest complaints are lack of extended storage slot and front facing camera flash. I would like to remedy those two issues with my next phone purchase.

Originally I was thinking of getting a Droid Turbo 2. But I thought I'd ask about what else is good currently? I clicked through a few "Best smartphones of 2016" and saw the Samsung Galaxy S7 mentioned as being the current phone to beat.

Recommendations?

Front facing camera flashes are really rare, so you should probably give up on that desire. Doesn't Android flash the entire screen when taking a front pic? iOS does this, but I thought it was already in Android.

Anyway, the S7, HTC 10, and Moto X Pure all seem well-regarded and take SD cards. You have to buy the Moto direct from Motorola, though, which may or may not matter to you.

Thanks for the reply. I don't understand this part, though. What does this mean exactly?

Looking at a few more websites, it sounds like we're in the middle of a generation and the set of next gen phones is going to release in something like September? Which is 3 months away. So is it perhaps a better idea for me to wait? Or am I wrong here?

The entire screen flashes bright white when using the front facing camera to simulate a flash.

Selane
May 19, 2006

Yes, most phones don't have front facing flashes because the average person doesn't want a bright-rear end camera flash going off literally a foot away from their face. The screen flash type thing is generally the closest you're going to get. It works pretty decently.

Ah, I see. Well, I just checked and my Droid Turbo doesn't seem to do that for some reason. Maybe I'm missing a setting somewhere? It just shows a still image of the pic with the aperture twirl overlay.

Anyway, I think I'll go to the store and look at the S7 Edge and HTC 10. I just read an article that said Motorola has really screwed the pooch re: support and updates since it's take over by Lenovo, so maybe it's time to move to Samsung or something else.

Are you going to be making phone calls with the number? Fi says its $0.20 a minute.

Not sure about google voice, does it not work with Fi?

Otherwise, it's $10 per 1GB of 3 speed data for Fi, or $50 for unlimited 2G internet for T-Mobile. You won't find better than either of those.

My LG G3 isn't doing so well, so I as looking to get a new phone. My priorities are as follows:

1) good camera
2) removable storage
3) good battery life

I seem to have narrowed it down to the Sony Xperia Z5 or a Galaxy S7. I can't get a decent handle on the difference between the cameras, other than they both have fast autofocus and even though it's 23MP vs 12MP, the quality is comparable. Does anyone have any specific suggestions? If everything is even, I guess I'll get the Xperia since it's cheaper, and there are only so many Android reviews I can read without seeking out personal recommendation. Thanks.

The S7's probably a better phone overall and while Samsung isn't always known for their support, Sony's phone division seems to be death-spiraling (and barely exists in the US in any case, assuming that's where you live), so I wouldn't really place a lot faith in them, either.
