I found that the ASRock Fatal1ty Z170 Professional Gaming i7 ATX is just about $70 off for a bit. I'm wondering if it's worth changing the build for the 6600K chip from a ASRock Z170M Extreme4 Micro ATX at that discount?

Does anyone have any thoughts?

It's a very nice board but it is ATX, are you using a case that can hold it? If so I'd say at that discount it's worth it, especially if you want to go for a high overclock.

Hey dudes. Looking for an amp to power a pair of consumer-audio speakers, from my computer. Can use 3.5mm analog input, USB, or HDMI. Output would be bare wire or banana plugs. Needs to take 110-240v, 50-60hz power. Any ideas? Probably looking at Class-D. Maybe This?

Okay, went to bed and got up this morning and the LED, RESET, POWER and HD LED cables are not sticking in to the mobo, they just keep falling out if I move anything around near them.

Any advice guys?

I apologize, it's 2:30 in the morning and I'm getting silly. Please don't even remotely take that seriously. My mobo came with a little piece to stick all those into before putting it in the slot, perhaps you've got the same thing? Or can find something similar. I'm sure others here have much better ideas.

Well I poured glue all over everything, will computer work good now?

But yeah, doesn't seem to have anything to make them stay in though.

Yeah that's normal. These little pins are consistently lovely in every way to the point where they only work without any tension whatsoever on the cable and your best bet is some small drops of hot glue (so you can remove them with a bit of effort later for upgrades).

The PSU in my dad's 8-year-old pc seems to be getting wonky, and I've finally managed to convince him that maybe it's time to just get a new machine, so:

What country are you in? Belgium
What are you using the system for? E-mail, web browsing (lots-of-open-tabs syndrome!), YouTube, Office
What's your budget? I'd like to keep it under €400, I did after all make the case that a custom build would be considerably cheaper than going the easy route of an equivalent pre-built machine.

Here's what I put together so far (using the German PartPicker site, prices will probably be a bit different from Belgian/Dutch vendors) :

PCPartPicker part list / Price breakdown by merchant

CPU: Intel Core i3-6100 3.7GHz Dual-Core Processor (€118.02 @ Mindfactory)
Motherboard: ASRock H110M-ITX/ac Mini ITX LGA1151 Motherboard (€80.85 @ Amazon Deutschland)
Memory: Crucial 8GB (2 x 4GB) DDR4-2133 Memory (€28.27 @ Amazon Deutschland)
Case: Cooler Master Elite 110 Mini ITX Tower Case (€43.25 @ Amazon Deutschland)
Power Supply: Silverstone 500W 80+ Gold Certified Fully-Modular SFX Power Supply (€84.81 @ Mindfactory)
Total: €355.20
Prices include shipping, taxes, and discounts when available

Not sure about the PSU, 500W is obviously more than needed but but it's both small and modular, and those qualities don't seem to exist in lower-wattage models?

For storage I'll reuse the Samsung 840 Evo (250 GB) that I put into his old machine a while ago, and possibly also the original 1 TB harddrive from that pc (showing no signs of deterioration at 8 years of age, but otoh he has no use for that much storage so I'll probably leave it out anyway). No need for a graphics card I think (I assume the integrated graphics will handle dual 1080p monitors just fine). For the OS I'll probably find a cheapo Windows 7 or 8 license and upgrade to 10 (can you install Windows 10 directly using a Windows 7 product key these days?).

It would also be nice to have a front panel SD card reader, but it would probably be cheaper and easier to just use a USB device for that, right? Anyway, very much open to suggestions for improvements here!

That PSU is fine. Corsair recently released a 450W modular one recently, but it doesn't seem to be widely available in the EU. It's also more expensive than the 500W in the states.

As someone new to all this I really don't want to be putting hot glue near anything that could be in the computer. I've been doing the best I can with the plastic ties and tying stuff together but everything just keeps falling out of their sockets.

Should I just use a bit more force?

They're supposed to sit flush with the motherboard.

There aren't supposed to be any sockets for the power switch/case LED plugs though, what sockets are you talking about?

ok, that is the point where you just want to fix them. Try electrical tape to keep the wires in a better position and if that doesn't work, hot glue (as long as it only touches the board and not any capacitors etc mounted to it) is probably not going to do any damage.

Plug all the front panel stuff out, double check if the crimped ends inside the plugs have come out the back for some reason, plug in only the power switch plug (and keep it in with your hand), turn on the power and then the PC. If it turns on the problem is overly loose cables.

Hmmm, try pulling more of the 24-pin cable out so that you have more slack to turn it around and plug it into the motherboard. The 24-pin typically takes a lot of force to get into its socket, there should be a latch on one side of the plug that goes over a tab on the socket. Other than that check to make sure that the power button wires are going over the correct pins, your motherboard manual should have a diagram somewhere that shows exactly which pin is which. Also looking at the latches on your RAM slots it looks like the RAM sticks are not fully in, you need to push them in until the latch on the top clicks into place. Check the video card for the same thing, you want to make sure it is firmly in its slot.

Do you have the monitor plugged into the video card or the motherboard? It has to be plugged into the video card otherwise it won't output video. Also check the monitor for a menu that lets you select the source for the video signal, some monitors won't automatically detect the correct source so you have to set it manually.

Pull all parts, connect one stick of RAM, connect the screen to the motherboard's graphics output. You should see the splash screen and an error message about a missing boot drive.

The Seagate ones are non-enterprise drives, like WD Blue/Green. They are not meant to put up with heavy use and will die earlier than a WD Black.

double check whether you're connecting the correct connector to the on/off switch panel in the correct position (sometimes retarded poo poo like the reset switch/power switch being labelled the wrong way round on either the board or the case can happen), and short the pins for the power switch with a screwdriver to check if the power switch is somehow broken (this is what the switch would normally do)

You should stop beating yourself up over this. This is your first build ever, and you've put a lot of money into it. Being nervous is normal. None of your questions have been dumb. They're normal first build questions.

And now you're learning first hand that issues with new computer builds can be hard to diagnose because the cause of the issue is very rarely immediately apparent.

Stick with it, work through the potential issues systematically, and soon you'll have a working PC. And the next time you build one you'll wonder why you made such a big deal of it the first time.

Mario wasn't sure if this Jeb guy was a good influence on Yoshi.

It's a real weird problem to have, it'd be something of an outside context problem for me for a bit, and I've been inside my computer's case on an on/off basis for probably ten years, and had a class in high school where we had a ton of partsed out computers and stuff that we were trying to assemble a machine or two from (and believe me not all of it worked).

It's important to remember that it's not something you can't do, it's something you don't know how to do yet.

Hi guys, I'm in the UK and looking to buy the cheapest/best value graphics card that will give me decent performance (at 1680x1050) in the new Doom and The Witcher 3. I'm fine with low graphics settings as long as the framerate is ok. I'm aware that there's a new gen of graphics cards out soon so what I'm looking for is an interim card that will remove the huge bottleneck caused by my old GTX 460 and tide me over by letting me play those two games, without breaking the bank as I'm unemployed right now.

I generally go with NVidia cards but happy to go with AMD this time around if it makes sense. Any advice? Thanks!
