It's all getting a bit silly, when in TYOOL 2016 often the only way to buy a music album is to import a CD or LP from the other side of the globe, because no legal download option exists. It's a complete crapshoot whether you'll be able to find what you want on a streaming service, and streaming sucks anyway for various reasons. Bands and/or record labels, it's not that hard to use Bandcamp or something, get with the program! Or hell, create your own download service, it works pretty well for Nuclear Blast with their FLAC downloads.

^^ Then again, you can't resell downloads over and over again like you can with media, which is one of the reasons why a lot of companies are/were hesitant about it for the longest while.Humphreys posted:Prosecutors in the 'Dalls Buyers Club' piracy case do a big 180 when the defendant agrees to the polygraph test. That is such a dumb thing to even offer up for something that is easily fooled. radiatinglines posted:It's incredible to me that producers are still doing this. I think it's more in line with Hollywood's thinking that movies only have a short lifespan to make back their money before they are either put on streaming media or start losing price. And they have a point: the movie that supposedly costs 10k to pirate can now be purchased on Amazon for $8, and this movie is only about three years old. And that's what makes these lawsuits even more hilarious: how much money is being spent on bullying some idiot who just downloaded a movie because he didn't think it was worth that much? The whole thing was a minefield that a lot of Hollywood types just walked right into without realizing how hilarious that an industry that has jacked up movie prices so much is now trying to justify that by going after downloaders to jack them over for even more cash.

Hollywood and the music industry have their heads so far up their own asses that they would probably prefer to end the music and movie industries entirely, because then people wouldn't be able to steal what doesn't exist anymore. "HAH! You pirates can't put us out of business, cause we'll put ourselves outta business first! WE WIN! TAKE THAT, FREELOADERS! GO BACK TO DOWNLOADING A CAR!"

Sometimes however they're used as a sly way of implying guilt. 'oh they wouldn't even take a lie detector test. What about that?' As a complete aside the Manson prosecutor used something similar. He asked one of the girls to take a handwriting sample to compare against the written notes on the wall even though he knew it'd be worthless because obviously you write on paper different then you write on blood on a wall. He was betting she'd say no and was happy that she continued to refuse.

That really bugs me, too. How many re-releases have we seen of the Eagles, the Beatles, Led Zeppelin and every other band that was huge decades ago? "New DIGITALLY REMASTERED*, with 2 hours of completely pointless studio banter and lo-fi alternative takes weren't on the original album, because they suck!" And most of the time, it's because the rights to the music changed hands, so the new record company re-releases everything to get a piece of those fat royalties. And of course we also get the endless cavalcade of shittastic compilations and "best of"/"greatest hits" records that are completely haphazardly thrown together from different eras of the bands' careers, with absolutely no coherent theme apart from "these tracks received airplay for some reason". Why are people still raking in fat stacks of cash for music that was originally released several decades ago? Ugh, everything about the current copyright scheme sucks. If the copyright period was actually limited like it was intended to, we'd see the established bands work a lot harder to be creative and groundbreaking, and a lot more new bands would get a fair shot, rather than being completely overrun by the established bands that got a head start. Slayer recently played a show here in Denmark, and a friend of mine happened to overhear the sound guys talking while the support band (Helhorse) were doing their sound check. Slayer's sound guy basically went "poo poo, those guys are pretty drat good! Now turn it down. Turn it WAY down.", which is just all kinds of hosed up. Since when has loving Slayer had to deliberately sabotage new bands like that? It's me, I'm angry about things I cannot possibly hope to change. * Code phrase for "brickwalled to poo poo", most of the time. KozmoNaut has a new favorite as of 16:28 on May 22, 2016 |

I can't for the life of me find it, but I remember a Cracked article that was full of stuff like it. My personal favourite was a big, I think, Russian dude that had a fight cut short due to a cut above his eye. Apparently in the rematch he just beat the poo poo out of his opponent to the point just before the round would end, purely so he could prove to everyone he should have won the initial bout. Before her loss, she was a media darling who was doing photoshoots, magazine covers, the whole nine yards. A lot of that went around the idea of her being undefeated, which was just tempting fate. And when the eventual finally happened, she was just dropped like a lead weight. Funny if you like it when people inflated by the media get popped, not so when you realize she went through some hard times afterwards and pondered suicide. But then again, who the hell tempts fate by saying you'll never be defeated? She was basically living Rocky III.
