How viable are magic-oriented builds in this game? I'm planning on playing this after I finish DS2 and I've heard that magic isn't as good as previous games, is this true?

If you're talking pvp, pyro has a couple of good damage available midgame, plus iron flesh if you want poise for a few seconds. Miracles have a couple of buffs that are handy (tears of denial is quite aptly named, sunlight oath damage buff is good for alpha strike builds). Sorceries let you do trolly things like hidden body+white and obscuring rings to pretend to be a player ghost and stab anyone you fooled, or chameleon with WoB and Fingers up and watch the souls roll in as the spirits fight each other.

That said, think of your chosen magic as complementing your hitty stick, rather than replacing it. Raw rear end, Infused AGS are good here (My pyro had the latter). Alpha striking faith types also like Mornes hammer or Dragonslayer Greataxes (I've been using the latter to decent success, though the former seems better for turning ganks around).

oh ok I thought disconnect meant alt+f4. that's interesting though. I recall reading a while ago that blues did get rewards if the bad phantom returned home. maybe that was true and is no longer? or it could be dependent on the blue's actions...

oh or not. it seems like the blue has to have some amount of participation in order to get an ear though. Like if I get summoned as a blue and the invader dies before I see them, I don't get nothing. but I will get an ear if they die and I do some damage, even if I don't get the kill

Yeah it's really inconsistent. It's even possible to get an ear if you've inflicted no damage at all, you just need to be vaguely near them for some arbitrary period of time. They probably also need to be loaded into your level chunk to count too.

It's Dried Fingers, but yeah. You only have to re-use a seed if you die. Invaders give gently caress-all souls though; it's not an efficient way to gain levels. It's only good if you want to help out your blue spirits (or more likely, help out the red spirits by giving them loads of Forked Tongues)

This seems to be the case...except when it isn't. Cause there were definitely times where I got summoned as a blue and got an ear despite never even seeing the red because they died 5 seconds after my spawning animation finished.

It may simply be a mechanic that is bugged, which I'm sure would surprise absolutely no-one.

It's quite possible for blue sentinels to appear at the same time. Two blues can even appear, a minute or two apart, for one invader. You need to have free summon slots though, so it'll only happen if the host used a dried finger and only has one summon (so they have two slots free) almost fairly certain that three could happen if the host never summons anyone.

That's why usually if that happens, gently caress it, crystal out. It's not worth the risk and you just got a victory of pissing off two blues.

While we're talking about pyromancy, is there anything I can do to boost my damage once I hit the scaling cap? I'm 40/30 int/fai right now (planning on pumping int to test sorcery scaling after 50), wearing great swamp ring, witch's ring, lloyd's sword ring, dark clutch ring (when I use black fire orb instead of great chaos fire orb), flame +10, is that about the ceiling?

I've been having a fun time in NG+ in Crucifixion Woods where a red invader took on over seven other invaders while i tossed prism stones and made gestures. Even had two bluecops come which my friendly invader was able to handle both. I really wish you could put Crystal Sage off later, been having such fun invasions there (except for the gank squads of course). Also, I wish heavy armor wasn't so heavy, even with minimal investment into all my other stats I can barely use Morne's Hammer and wear his armor at the same time so I'm stuck with the fat-roll with Havel's, Favor & Protection, and Prisoner's Chain.

^^^Try testing using Deep Protection and see it if increases your damage. It's a good miracle in general if you can slot for it.

At least they made the other upgrade materials infinite-purchaseable, so really you can have all your weapons at +9 (or +4 for special) and the slabs are for things you want to commit to.

I'm kind of sad at the build variety this go-round. I've done a playthrough with a big fuckoff sword, a tiny fuckyoubleed dexterity sword, a luck build and just finished a sorcery build (which got stupid for NK; after a bit of practice he hit me ONCE in the whole fight, the dragon didn't even touch me).

I wonder if infusing dark killed the bleed build-up on it, or if I just couldn't land enough consecutive hits to make it fill.

Jaaam already said get all Slabs which should be your number 1 goal. After that finish off all NPC quests and buy any of their gear you think looks cool.

If you haven't done Archdragon Peak and Nameless King yet, give it a shot. There's a ton of stuff to grab in the Peak even without killing NK and if you do finish him off (hard, I know) you get an extra Slab and some rad armor.

Don't be afraid of NG+, it's not that much harder. Be sure you have the Hornet Ring though, because crit damage is 1.5x in NG+ and 2x in NG++, and because of this and the higher enemy health crits are the fastest way to kill in those modes.

I play with the scythe a lot and my advice to you is to run around with it one handed doing the running attack over and over. It hits everything in front of you and does good chip damage against people who are blocking. The 1 handed moveset is really good and switching between 1 handed and 2 handed to vary timing catches people offguard.
