I always think of that old American brand of "chinese" "food": That ad is way before my time, but in the 1980s you'd see this stuff a lot: The stuff was everywhere.

The air skirmishing continues. More troops arrive to break the deadlock here. Now this is a surprise – I was expecting another long slog here. As I hoped, the Chinese throw away troops trying to shift our forces. A good day in China, I did not expect to advance that quickly. Two more damaged ships go down.

It's good that you are bringing in reinforcements to take the base Milne Bay. In every Japanese AAR I've seen on the Matrix forums the Allies taking Milne Bay allows them to build it up to have a fairly big port and airfield to the point that they can afford to abandon Port Moresby when they start their counter-offensive. You think the allied bombers hitting Espiritu Santo are bad enough now? Imagine them suddenly getting a base that can hit Rabaul and, with larger bombers, Truk.

Goetta posted:How much can the Chungking hex supply itself? Could you cut it off and then just sit there for a few months? Chungking has (I think) the highest amount of industry in China with 370 points of heavy industry, 180 points of light industry, and 180 resources. The good news is, according to the game manual, resource centers don't produce anything when there's an enemy unit in the hex, so it's possible to starve the local industry into producing nothing. The bad news is that resources can be brought in from elsewhere, so Grey would need to block the other hex sides. Three of Chungking's hex sides are rivers, so entering via those would force a shock attack (and not go well). You can also block those sides by sitting units (or unit fragments) in the adjacent hexes, but the garrison could easily send a unit or two out to dislodge them. I kinda doubt the AI's savvy enough at land combat to do that, so maybe give it a try? As for burning through the supply they have stockpiled there already, I have no idea. The game manual doesn't say much about how many supplies land units consume through various actions (or even inaction, like just sitting there). Chengtu's another huge industry center and only about a month's march away. I wonder what's defending it. Chungking's a light urban hex, so defenders get a 2x bonus there. Grey could probably afford to pull about 1000 AV out of there to go take a look. Taking that and Rangoon (to cut off the 500 supply/day the Burma Road deposits in China) would probably make everything in China outside of Chungking start to collapse.

Don't destroyed units respawn at Chunking too? So Grey wiping out stacks elsewhere in China could compound the bad supply problem there

A lot of Japanese players aiming for Chungking will try to knock units down as far as possible without killing them, because when they respawn they're at half strength if I remember correctly.

You really need to cut supply, have units enter the hex from the other sides to prevent supply using those sides. It's going to be a long-rear end siege so letting hundreds or thousands of extra supply points trickle in is just going to get you torn up.

The enemy fire hundreds of shots at our ships – and this is the only one that hits – not shown are the previous two attempts/reports. We also continue to interdict enemy shipping. The Nates continue to do poorly against the more modern planes. Our troops are closing in on the base however. Things are going to end badly for this tanker. We start destroying more Dutch units. We take out an entire legion. Another wave breaks against our troops – this is going to be a bloody battle. Already their forces have dropped from 98,500 men to 81,500 – 17,000 men lost. Our own losses stand at 6,000. Not a bad day, we got some good hits in and caused more casualties on the ground. Three good hits in all. The white elephant has arrived!

We take a couple more hits unloading troops and supplies. We begin to soften up Soreabaja. The clean up op continues. One of our troop convoys is hit. Some of our planes strike deep into Burma – and get butchered for it. I have no idea what their target was. We lose a transport, but trade fire and get a hit in. Owch, that was a lot of planes lost today for no gain. It was not a good day for the merchant marine either!
