I've seen shit you people wouldn't believe. Cop cars on fire off the shoulder of I-94. I watched search lights glitter in the dark near the Ambassador Bridge. All those moments will be lost in time, like piss in the drain. Time to retch.

This Rei Ayanami is freaking dead on and this picture looks like a still from a non-existant Evangelion movie. I think this one looks a lot better than most because that seems to be her actual hair and not a wig. She's also pale and looks depressed.

A very good Chun-li. She actually has Chun-li thighs. That sounds kinda creepy when I say it like that but well Chun-li kinda has weird proportions and not many actual human beings are shaped like that

I'd wager that it's still a wig, and that the difference is all in the styling. Tons of people who cosplay anime characters try to re-create the original illustrations 100%, which results in a stylized, cartoony, sometimes uncannily flat appearance. In real life, hair isn't symmetrical, or perfectly sculpted, or completely uniform in color; it has variations in shade and natural asymmetry/irregularities, and reacts to gravity, wind, etc. This girl clearly put effort into styling the wig the way a real human would - instead of a faithful reproduction of a drawing that can't exist in real life, it's an interpretation that translates the overall feel of the drawing into a believable real-world look. She also translated the skin-tight suit into kind of a built-up armored suit, which gives it more depth and texture, adding to the "realistic" look.

Compare to this cosplayer - her outfit is also extremely well-put-together, but in a much more stylized way.

I think you might be on to something. The Rei picture I posted paradoxically looks like the cartoon character if she were "real". The cosplayer I posted has some very light blue hair which has a bit of a silver gradient because actual hair isn't one solid uniform color. Also a lot of Reis like the one you posted seem to have kind of, well, "sculpted" hair whereas even in the anime her hair is kinda messy and asymmetrical.

I think that I like it when people take a character and give them a more "realistic" look because often times things will look good drawn on paper, but when recreated in real life often look extremely weird. Comic book characters are a good example. Now granted, most comics have kind of adopted the look of the marvel movies, but one time Iron Man looked like this:

Before he looked like this:

I'd take the modern Iron Man aesthetic over the retro look every time because there is one thing that absolutely bugs me every single time I look at the retro design -- there are no joints at the elbows and knees. The arms and legs are always drawn fluid, which never made sense. He can't bend his goddamn limbs! Aaaaaah

This is what I mean when some things that are drawn look weird in real life. Iron Man's old costume is pretty much physically impossible.

I would say that Cable's arm is another thing that seems impossible, but well, they actually gave Bucky one in Winter Soldier so maybe I'm wrong.

Honestly, most Golden \ Silver Age comic book superheroes look really silly in real life. Old school Thor is super goofy looking, as is just about everyone in his comic.

I think the Rei I posted looks good because Evangelion's character designs are not really all that out there (even though the show itself is very bizarre and surreal.) I think things like Eva, Akira or Ghost in the Shell could all translate to real people fine. Then you have something like Dragon Ball Z where I'm not convinced you can do without looking super goofy.

Thing is, even if you handwave old iron man's weird leggings as technowizardry, it's still a design that looks fundamentally really goofy. The breastplate, the gloves and boots, the bucket head. It doesn't really look like a suit of armour at all, let alone a whizzy futuristic one. It's a dude wearing standard superhero spandex but with a helmet and breastplate straight out of the 1400s. Rei's design still looks good, whereas old iron man looks stupid, regardless of whether it's real or drawn.

The early Iron Man suit isn't all metal plates (with the exception of the Mark I.) The arms and legs are more metallic cloth kind of like chainmail.
