the only thing i'm not really digging is the mech cg, it doesn't look super great the 2d stuff is great though and the characters are really fun, the first two episodes just didn't really show a lot of fun stuff with kennosuke to hook me like the third one did

Lots of people just watch a movie or anime for the story or for cool scenes, without much care to the direction of a shot or who directed/wrote it, though having knowledge of those can certainly help you appreciate it and lead you to finding other cool things. I wouldn't say this makes them a problem in any way just because they don't care to think about it.
