Anyhow, I kept trying to go for League stuff until about 2014, but League went through a bunch of transitions that were pretty awful for outsiders on the scene. You think I peaced out, but honestly I was still there.

1) LCS
LCS was a good thing for the structure of League, but as an outsider it was a death sentence in terms of work. Before LCS there were a ton of tournament series - Riot Events, TSM, CLG, ESL, MLG, etc. They operated on their own and hired casters on their own. Once LCS appeared, most of these events dropped off the planet or partnered with Riot. New tournaments popped up, but they were scrappy little things that fed off tier 2 teams and rarely garnered high viewership, usually being beaten out by multiple LCS streamers streaming on their own. Off the top of my head I remember doing:

2012 - MLG, IPL, TSM, Leaguepedia, 4PL, and a bunch of other smaller tournaments like AHGL. Honestly until November I was casting every week and quite often I'd only have a couple days of rest.
2013 - TSM, Mobafire, CLG, NACL, LCS Qualifier Qualifiers, and that's about it. These tournaments ran less often, less consistently, and many of those were one-time events
2014 - NACL - I actually lived at the NACL house with a couple other casters for this. At this point I can remember like 2-3 non Riot gigs.

Edit: Oh yeah MLG didn't pay. And they didn't tell me until I arrived that they weren't paying me.

There were a couple of solid non-Riot gigs out there still, like ESL or Korean League, but I think I saw one casting opening between the two in three years.

2) Riot didn't like me.
Rioters are cool people, and a lot of the goon Rioters that I met were great, but there's enough people high up in the eSports department that didn't like my casting that I was never going to get a Riot job. Honestly, that's fine by me, it's just unfortunate that most jobs were done primarily through Riot. This was something I talked to specific people about, and first impressions are pretty strong at Riot. Similarly, Wombat is never going to get a job there because of his initial impressions years ago.

3) There were a bunch of other problems that sprung up. Remember when Nintendo clamped down on YouTube revenue? Riot actually did the same thing in 2012, a little bit after I started making videos. There was a pretty long period where I didn't receive income from YT videos because there was no way to fight off the flags that were being automatically put up. I put more eggs in the casting basket because I had no idea if they'd ever solve this problem. Once they did I'd lost a lot of viewership. That and I don't think the format works too well for League. Really short, snappy, well-edited videos can convey more. I tried to coach a couple of times too, but it didn't really work out well either time (C9 didn't make it into LCS in 2013, and Velocity gave me the boot that same year).

I ended up going back to school and I'm graduating in a few months. I'll probably take time and write articles about eSports and games, but I'm not going to try and break into casting again or do it for financial gain (Toss 'em onto Medium or something).

Even after (I assume) the Gangplank rework has been overtuned, it still feels a bit awkward that a hero originally based on strong poke with onhits like Sheen now wants to play with barrel chains. There's still elements that suggest "shoot them and apply your onhit stuff", but then its paired with a passive that only applies on melee hits, and barrels that dont apply onhits but give 40% Apen and 120 bonus damage.

Maybe I should look at this from a more optimistic "GP has versatile attacks that he can use depending on the enemy".

(Also it feels like they just up and throw 1500 silver serpents at you as a pity gift, which asks the question "why arent these tied to the ult levels?")

Edit: Apparently the guy leaked info of over 5000 accounts who paid anywhere from 50 to 250 bucks. Jesus Christ. That's a crazy amount of money to be made.
