Extra curricular poo poo also sucks if you have like say, a single parent who works all the time and you don't live near the school so you absolutely have to take the bus or you are hosed for getting home. Plus it costs more money and stuff. Basically it sucks being poor in America, shocking news.

I have person from a neighboring company in my building that always plugs up the toilet on our floor and gets poo poo on the seat. He literally is unable to wipe without getting poo poo on the seat. He won't poo poo in his own suite. He comes down to our public bathroom in the hall and blasts rear end. I often see him scurrying away and I know that I'll have to call maintenance. I'm beginning to think Bluetooth headsets are becoming obsolete. It wasn't long ago that you would see lots of people walking around with them jammed in their ear whether they were talking or not. Now I never see them in public but I see more people than ever with the white corded earbud mic. I work around a lot of truckers and they all still use the Bluetooth earpieces, but giant industrial looking ones. I'm guessing the hassle of making sure those things were charged and paired at all times might have led to their decline.

I use one at work, but you're right, it's really only good in certain jobs or situations where you can keep it readily charged. Sure, I can pair my BT headset to my smartphone, but it's got a weird proprietary charging base that's bulky and not very portable sucks because it's got great range and clarity.

That and girls. I'd also like to echo frustration with the lack of critical thinking being taught in red states. I just finished teaching a Stats 101 class to a group of college freshmen and advanced high school seniors. Only 3 of my students could reliably plug numbers into a formula. God help them if they had to explain the reasoning behind probability calculations. Obsolete tech: calculators that aren't graphing. Every single one of my students used their phone or a TI-83. The college had a rule that only standalone calculators could be used, but gently caress that. I'm not making 20+ students in a community college waste money a four function calculator. I'll just monitor the room like a creep to prevent the more obvious cheating.

All candidates have to surrender their phones and are given cheap calculators with our logo to use. They have to give them back, but surprisingly they still get stolen sometimes. It's a bigger deal for us because we have major accreditation at stake, so we need to keep to strict security standards.

If I ask my students a question that requires then to infer something about reality based on math they are baffled and annoyed by what they perceive as a nonsensical and wholly alien type of question. (Example: You're pushing a box along the floor. Given that force = mass x acceleration, if the mass is constant what happens to the acceleration when the force is decreased? [Yeah, really. They think it's just a math question and don't bring their basic logic to bear.]) That seems like... really basic reasoning, though. The sort of thing you learn to do as sanity checking when using a calculator: is the biggerness/smallerness sticking properly? Are kids seriously that messed up coming into high school now?

At my high school, band was an actual class that took place during school hours and gave course credit. Marching band and theater were extracurricular though.

Wireless headphones for music is awesome and they're getting better all the time. I have a pair that I use for when I'm doing yard work or cycling. I was referring to the ones that plug into one ear for phone calls. Usually with an obnoxious blue led. Those things were super popular a few years ago but now the people that used them, or would have used them just use the wired headset mics. My headphones have a mic for phone calls but I never use them for that. If I get a call I just hold the phone up to my head like god intended.

Band referred properly to a class that taught instrumentation and was a course credit, but had other stuff like marching band and rehearsals for performances that took place after hours. Theatre was extracurricular (except for some summer plays that were offered as credit, which unfortunately led to a flood of people who didn't give a poo poo about acting being thrown into the ensemble of Grease that were a total pain in the rear end to work with), but the Acting classes were course credit during the school day and were almost exclusively populated by the theatre kids.

My Science teacher had a practical series of classes on brewing ginger beer (non-alcoholic of course). But, being Australia - some of us read the next few pages in the textbook and half the class ended up with alcoholic stuff that was pretty darn tasty. Our Mathematics teacher however was a bit of a loose canon. He created a 'fun project' where we all get a bag of fun sized candy bars and gambled on horses coded in an excel document with all sorts of calculations on the odds etc. He also taught us not balancing checkbooks, but balancing a huge number of credit cards in a way to delay paying back debt. He was interesting.

You do realize most calculators sold these days are non-graphing non-scientific calculators used for simple calculations by people who work with numbers a lot? Table-top calculators are just so much easier and faster to use than using Windows Calculator or whatever ( at using a phone calculator app for actual work) because you don't have to switch between windows or anything. And small pocket calculators are used by like a million or more warehouse and logistics workers. Of course applications should be built in such a way that no-one ever needs to do simple calculations but applications are both designed and written by nerds and nerds are literally poo poo.

I use my iPhone calculator when doing things like hand scoring exams, because I could subtract 15, 8, and 31 from 100 in my head....but I really don't want to spend the effort. It works just as well as any "real" calculator, and you can turn the phone sideways to expand it to a bunch of other functions. The only flaw is that there's a very slight delay between pressing a "button" and the calculator registering it, so if you're a fast typist you can try to add 4+3+5 and accidentally type 43+5.

I think everyone can agree touchscreens are good for certain applications using gestures, but definitely falls apart for pixel point accuracy, or even simulating actual tactical feedback. I think touchscreens in cars are possibly the dumbest thing, it removes being able to rely on muscle memory and keeping your eyes on the road. Because you can just feel around on actual buttons, like OK here's the volume so the next button is station 1. Same for TV remotes.
