Some light freude. Roughly a third of the way through my morning commute, while drinking some coffee - my throat said "Nope. We're coughing. Right now. Sorry about this." Sigh. Driving down the highway. Just resigned to cleaning up a mess when I got to where I was going. Also, that van is awesome.

Solice Kirsk posted:The other defendants waiting their turn and slowly paying more and more attention and starting to crack up is my favorite part. Something like this happened last week when I was in the Atlanta area on a legal trip, which is some personal schadenfreud. Long story short, an employee who was fired in 2014 (from an office that we closed and moved down south this past December, so her old workplace literally doesn't exist anymore) was demanding back pay from the hours she snuck into the office while on suspension, or when she was in the office being fired. She also demanded a Christmas bonus for 2014 that the rest of the office had received the month after her termination. She was fired for cause after being directly insubordinate to the owner over a company password and trying to return to the office to gather papers while suspended, so she had been rejected several times by the Georgia Department of Labor when trying to accuse us of wrongful dismissal, and she had a previous attempt in this court dismissed for filing it against the wrong people. She spent a good year trying to sue or otherwise legally harass us before last week, just repeatedly filing over and over after being denied in the hopes of bullying us into getting money. Since it was a small county court, all of the plaintiffs, defendants, lawyers, etc. for all the cases that day were waiting in the courtroom and simply got called up one case at a time. The ex-employee made one of the worst showings ever in a courtroom short of a sovereign citizen. During the course of the case, she admitted under oath to: * Stealing other employees' pay stubs without their knowledge (which is how she knew they were getting a Christmas bonus). * Working on her own personal recipe business during business hours. * Working for a competitor and feeding her information about our business during business hours. * Staying in the office late or sneaking back in to try and get overtime without permission or accessing our computers without supervision. We actually knew about all of this thanks to browsing her company email after she was fired (for the overtime, we checked our call logs and saw that her phone was making and receiving calls after hours), but by admitting it under oath in front of a judge she got it on transcript as evidence against her if she tries to appeal. Meanwhile, the people waiting for their cases to be considered could be seen trying (and failing) to stifle giggles every time she said something else outlandish. The best part is that nobody even asked her for this information, as it was mostly irrelevant to the case. She just wouldn't shut up and started blithely admitting to all of this awful behavior for no good reason. In the end, she was awarded....$18.27. She was awarded 1 hour of pay for the time she spent in the office being fired, entirely on a technicality due to the termination not being submitted in writing on time. The judge didn't even make us pay court costs or anything. She still tried to desperately talk over the decision to convince the judge to award her more money as she was being told "Case dismissed."
