I would not be surprised in the least if the new Top Gear is going to be too similar and cause much groaning and eye rolling but not different enough to separate it fully from the old Top Gear anyway. Much like a lot of people the new main host is incredibly unlikable and I thought this when James drove his Ferrari in that one episode years ago.

Yeah, that's my understanding as well. Bummer. Wish there was less of a PITA way to watch them.

Word is they're going to have an off-road segment with a jump, rallycross style, that'll be used for SIARPC segments and when appropriate (or amusingly inappropriate) in reviews.

Something tells me even Top Gear won't be able to get away with jumping Ferrari press cars, so they'll presumably keep the old layout for Stig laps.

My thoughts as well. LeBlanc seemed kinda out of left field when he was first named but everything I've heard him say about it or seen in the trailers tells me he's in the right mindset. It's a funny show about cars.

There's a tinfoil-hattish part of me that kinda wonders if Evans is there as a sacrificial lamb. The producers want to make LeBlanc the main host but fear that replacing Mr. "Americans are all Wal-Martian stereotypes" with an American directly would be too jarring, so they put him at #2 and put someone who's an easy fit on paper (career in presenting, well known car enthusiast) but can have the public turned against him in the #1 slot. After a season or two people are used to the American and Evans can be dropped. If the show as a whole doesn't go well the internet's already poised to blame him, so there's that too.

Kind of out there but it doesn't sound as entirely idiotic as it should.

Yeah that episode with Chris Evans and all his white Ferraris was my first introduction to him and I was immediately struck by the thought "man this guy seems like an unfunny rear end with zero sense of humor" so its pretty weird that they went ahead and hired him to replace a funny rear end with a great sense of humor.

And I was also taken by surprise with Matt Leblanc but I'll be damned - I think it's going to work really well and its cool to be able to get to know him outside of his role on friends.

This is a minor F1 nerd point but I like that they signed Eddie Jordan because he "has a huge Formula 1 background. When he talks about a car’s performance that guy knows what he’s talking about."

I watched a documentary he was in that was released a month ago and he outright says he never really was strong on the engineering side and he succeeded more because he was good at the commerical side of the sport. Again this was a month ago.

My favorite Eddie Jordan bit was when he visited the Force India office. Force India used to be Jordan, a team he ran until he couldn't afford to own it anymore. Everyone is just at their desk, doing their jobs. He walks in and announces that if he still ran the team he'd fire them all because there were too many people working there. What the gently caress is that? Who walks into an office and announces he'd fire everyone if he ran the place?

Its pretty clear that they signed him because he was bringing some F1 credibility with a modicum of charisma. The issue is that his strength as an F1 pundit has been his knowledge of the commercial side of the sport and really doesn't have a lot of technical insight which makes me wonder what role he is actually supposed to serve.

His grandest achivement in F1 was improving the quality of grid girls so..... I guess front row of the studio audience will be good viewing?

First impression: a layer of humour is gone. "Ambitious but rubbish" is now "ambitious and shouty TV fun time!"

But they cracked a joke about catering in the first couple of minutes, that's got to count for something.

So far so... More of the same but not quite as good. Evans actually has worse dress sense than Clarkson, somehow (but has at least admitted he looks like a dick), LeBlanc is likeable but doesn't seem a natural presenter.
Some sweet US Navy Agressor porn in the first segment though.
